[b]Game Day: Rockets vs. Lakers

Setting the scene for Houston's Wednesday night showdown with the Los Angeles Lakers

At some point this season the Rockets have to record a win against a team from Los Angeles, right? The first 10 days of the 2013-14 campaign saw Houston suffer dispiriting defeats at the hands of the Clippers (twice) and Lakers, prompting a plethora of ill will and animus to be directed from Houston to Hollywood during that oh so unfortunate stretch.

But with the dawn of a new calendar year comes a golden opportunity to start anew and break free from those less than desirable feelings. Because, let’s face it, the Lakers may never be more vulnerable than they are right now. A plague has ripped through Los Angeles this season and it’s taken direct aim at the point guard position, sidelining all three of the Lakers’ on-court quarterbacks (while recently nabbing the Clippers’ Chris Paul as well). Throw in the latest Kobe Bryant injury and you have a team in complete disarray, having lost eight of its last nine games.

None of this means the Rockets can afford to overlook LA, of course. There’s scant chance of that after Houston allowed a late lead to slip away the last time the Lakers paid a visit to Toyota Center. Los Angeles sprung that upset by draining an unholy amount of 3-pointers, finishing with 16 for the night after knocking down 11-of-14 from beyond the arc in the first half alone. Fittingly, Steve Blake sealed Houston’s fate by sinking a game-winning triple with 1.3 seconds remaining.

LOS ANGELES LAKERS
Lakers Desperate Against Dwight Howard's Rockets
The Los Angeles Lakers are desperate for a win, and a highly publicized gamed against Dwight Howard and the Houston Rockets offers a perfect opportunity.
By Shahan Ahmed | Wednesday, Jan 8, 2014 | Updated 12:55 PM PSTView Comments (0) | Email | Print

Pau Gasol #16 of the Los Angeles Lakers drives with the ball past Dwight Howard #12 of the Houston Rockets during the game at Toyota Center on November 7, 2013 in Houston, Texas. The duo will meet again on January 8, 2014.

PHOTOS AND VIDEOS

Having lost eight of the last nine games, the Los Angeles Lakers are in a dark place right about now.

A win on Wednesday against Dwight Howard and the Houston Rockets would not get them out of the darkness, but it would help. For all the recent questions about poor defense, lack of effort and constant losing, 48 minutes against Houston would go a long way to winning back fans’ hearts.

The manner in which Howard left the Lakers hanging ensured that this game means something more.

The Lakers have few highlights this season, but beating Howard’s Rockets on a last second 3-pointer by Steve Blake is probably top of that list. Blowing out the Los Angeles Clippers on opening night is probably the only other honorable mention after 35 harsh games.

Lakers-Rockets Preview
RECOMMEND4TWEET1
STATS LLC
The Houston Rockets hope easing into the new year hasn't cooled off their top scorer.

James Harden and the Rockets end a five-day break and play just their second game of 2014 when they host the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.

When the Rockets (22-13) last hit the floor Jan. 3 against New York, Harden was close to unstoppable. The shooting guard went 10 of 19 from the floor and hit all 12 of his free throws, finishing with 37 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Harden, who had 38 points and 10 rebounds in a New Year's Eve loss against Sacramento, has attempted at least 12 free throws five times this season and the Rockets are 4-1 in those games -- the lone loss coming against the Lakers on Nov. 7.

"Hopefully this rest can help get guys back, help us get our legs, and all the guys get our focus on what each and every guy needs to do from here on out for this team to be successful," Harden said.

"For me, being healthy, just staying in the gym, I'm kind of getting my shot back. These last couple games have been pretty good for me, just have to be consistent."

The Rockets, though, have struggled mightily from 3-point range over their last five games, shooting 26.5 percent (35 for 132) since a 12-for-24 performance in a Christmas Day win at San Antonio.

The Lakers (14-21) will be playing their second game in as many nights after losing 110-97 at Dallas on Tuesday.

Houston's Howard faces Lakers once again

Sports Network
9:48 a.m. CST, January 8, 2014

Sports.com — Dwight Howard will get another chance at his former team Wednesday night when the struggling Los Angeles Lakers visit the Toyota Center to face the Houston Rockets.

Howard played last season with the Lakers in a drama-filled, success-free campaign. He elected not to re-sign with LA in the offseason and headed south to Houston.

Wednesday will mark the second time Howard's Rockets tangle with the Lakers, who are without future Hall of Famers Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash. Los Angeles topped Houston by one in Houston on Nov. 7.

The Rockets snapped a two-game losing streak on Friday with a 102-100 home win over the New York Knicks.

Aaron Brooks made two free throws with 17 seconds remaining. James Harden poured in 37 points to lead Houston but Brooks scored the last two. His foul shots came after Knicks guard J.R. Smith missed a 3-pointer he took with the score tied and despite the shot clock being turned off.

Chandler Parsons had 17 points, Howard scored 15 and Jeremy Lin added 14 for the Rockets, who rallied from an eight-point deficit after three quarters.

"It's a huge sigh of relief. We found a way," said Harden.

Lakers Trade News: Will Pau Gasol Be Traded Before The Deadline?
By Greg Price
on January 08 2014 11:31 AM

This year the injury plagued 14-21 Lakers have relied on Pau Gasol more than ever, and he’s responded with 15.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game, but he’s far from the player that averaged a double-double in his first three full seasons in Southern California. Reuters
At this point in his career, there isn’t a trade rumor that can faze Pau Gasol.

What China Has In Store For Its One-Child Policy In 2014
The Los Angeles Laker power forward and his expiring $19.3 million contract have been linked to plenty of trade speculation this season, but it’s nothing new for Gasol. Since the Lakers acquired him from Memphis in 2007-08 season, the Spaniard’s been tabbed for moves to Toronto, Chicago, New York, and more.

The 12-year veteran was technically traded to the Houston Rockets in 2011 in a three-way deal that would have netted the Lakers point guard Chris Paul. However, the deal was nixed by soon-out-the-door commissioner David Stern, and ever since then the trade rumors have been ceaseless.

Some of the talk was warranted, especially for the lowest offensive output of his career early last season while Gasol struggled to adjust to his new role under head coach Mike D’Antoni’s system, and while hobbled by injuries.

Lakers trade rumors: Pau Gasol trade rumors discussed by LA Lakers star

January 8, 2014

Lakers trade rumors were addressed by Pau Gasol himself this week. The latest LA Lakers trade rumors were reported on in an article by ESPN on Wednesday (Jan. 8). It seems that Gasol thought he was already dealt over the weekend when he started getting questions about it on Saturday (Jan. 4) when he was enjoying a night out at "The Lion King" in Hollywood.

Luol Deng Dealt To Cleveland Cavaliers

The former All-Star power forward stated, "I checked my Twitter at intermission and I see that it's almost official. I was getting all these messages, 'Farewell, Pau. Thanks for all your services,' all that stuff. It was a really good musical. I enjoyed it. I brought my parents and my little brother. It was a nice family time. But that kind of affected a little bit, the rest of the show."

As is known now, it was the Chicago Bulls that acquired Andrew Bynum from the Cleveland Cavaliers, leaving Los Angeles out of the huge transaction. It was a deal that made sense for both franchises and it will likely benefit the Cavs quite a bit for the rest of this season and the Bulls in the near future.

It's like Chris Kaman never left the Dallas Mavericks.

Kaman didn't play during the Los Angeles Lakers' 110-97 loss in Dallas, and per the Dallas Morning News' Brad Townsend, people noticed:

There's no way Kaman was referencing his first nine years in the league

Looks who’s still a Laker: Pau Gasol
By Mark Medina, Los Angeles Daily News
POSTED: 01/07/14, 10:48 PM PST | UPDATED: 2 HRS AGO
DALLAS >> Pau Gasol sat in the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood last Saturday night, watching “The Lion King” musical with his parents and younger brother in hopes to experience no worries for the rest of his days.

At intermission, though, Gasol turned on his cell phone and logged onto Twitter. Then, he learned through a false report from KSPN-710AM that the Lakers had traded him to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Andrew Bynum.

“I was getting all these messages, ‘Farewell, Pau. Thanks for all your services,’ ” all that stuff,” Gasol recalled after the Lakers’ 110-97 loss Tuesday to the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center. “I guess it’s good to get a heads-up a day before. Most guys don’t get that.”

Most guys also don’t get traded essentially three times, only for the deal never to happen. But such is the circle of life for Gasol. The Lakers shipped him over two years ago in a deal that would’ve landed them Chris Paul until the NBA decided otherwise. The other two scenarios stemmed from inacurrate media reports, both during the 2011-12 season and this past week.

Gasol still hasn’t expended his nine lives with the Lakers; Cleveland traded Bynum to Chicago for All-Star forward Luol Deng and a flurry of draft picks.

“It feels good to survive and live to fight another day,” said Gasol, who posted 15 points on only 5-of-14 shooting and 13 rebounds. “I’d like to continue to be here. But that’s not up to me.”

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak gives Mike D'Antoni a vote of confidence

HOUSTON — These are rough days for Lakers fans. Very.

General Manager Mitch Kupchak, however, sounded at ease during a phone interview with The Times, going over a variety of topics on a team that can’t stay healthy, play defense or, seemingly, make the playoffs.

First things first. Kupchak is satisfied with Coach Mike D’Antoni, blaming the Lakers’ woes on injuries and saying D’Antoni is doing a “great job.”

“We’re happy with Mike,” Kupchak said Wednesday. “You can look back six weeks ago and say it’s exciting and we’re playing great. It’s hard to ignore the injuries but it was a fun game to watch when we were playing without Kobe [Bryant] and anticipating his return. In other words, ‘Wow, we’re playing this well now and Kobe has still yet to return and neither has [Steve] Nash?’ So we had high hopes.”

Kupchak wouldn’t comment on the chances of Pau Gasol still being with the team after the Feb. 20 trade deadline.

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden tied a season high with 38 points and Dwight Howard added 20 points and 13 rebounds to propel the Houston Rockets to a 113-99 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.

Howard got his first win against his former team as the Rockets used a big third-quarter run to take the lead and send the injury-riddled Lakers to their third straight loss.

The Rockets trailed by a basket in the third quarter before going on a 17-2 run to take an 80-67 lead and roll to win.

Harden continued his recent torrid scoring with his third straight 30-point game. He has piled up 113 points in the last three games combined.

Nick Young scored 25 points to lead Los Angeles and Pau Gasol and Jodie Meeks scored 21 each.

Ronnie Brewer started for the first time this season in place of the injured Chandler Parsons, who was out with a sore right knee.

Howard made a season-high four steals, Harden collected a season-best five steals, and Terrence Jones had 15 points and 13 rebounds.

Harden ties season high with 38, Howard has 20 as Rockets down Lakers 113-99
Published January 08, 2014Associated Press

HOUSTON – The Houston Rockets recently have developed a knack for playing great in the third quarter.

Coach Kevin McHale loves what his team has been doing after the break and wishes they could find that intensity early in games.

James Harden tied a season high with 38 points, Dwight Howard added 20 points and 13 rebounds and the Rockets used a big third-quarter run to earn a 113-99 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.

Howard got his first win against his former team as the Rockets sent the injury-riddled Lakers to their third straight loss.

"We did a better job in the second half of defending," McHale said. "It was a big difference in the game."

The Rockets trailed by a basket in the third quarter before going on a 17-2 run to take an 80-67 lead and roll to victory.

Dwight Howard helps Rockets beat Lakers, 113-99

HOUSTON — The Lakers didn't look like themselves for 21/2 quarters, not necessarily a bad thing right now.

They hung with the Houston Rockets, even led by 11 points, until reality checked into the game on James Harden's alley-oop lob to Dwight Howard for a dunk.

Yep, him again.

Howard and the Rockets rallied to beat the Lakers, 113-99, Wednesday at Toyota Center.

Lakers fans won't want to hear it, but Howard wasn't having any of the "What if?" talk, pretending to fall asleep when asked about his former team.

Yet the Howard debate was awakened for a day as the Lakers lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

A Rockets fan held up a mocking homemade sign: "Hey L.A., Miss Him Yet?"

Then an unhappy Lakers fan in attendance offered his own opinion: "You could've had it all, Dwight!"

And somewhere in the Twitter universe, musician and Lakers fan Flea tweeted his always-fervent feelings.

"Dwight made me sad when he fouled himself out on purpose in lakers final playoff game last year. It hurt my heart. His apparent lack of heart," Flea wrote.

Third-quarter burst sends Rockets past Lakers
Posted on January 8, 2014 at 6:05 pm by Chron Sports in General

The highlights will focus on James Harden Euro-stepping his way past the Lakers’ Ryan Kelly with a move so devastating Kelly’s ankles might have thought they had put through a form of rookie hazing.

The numbers will point to Harden’s 38 points, making him the first Rocket to score at least 37 in three-consecutive games since Hakeem Olajuwon was rolling through the 1994-95 season.

The trend to emerge from the Rockets’ 113-99 second-half roll past the Lakers on Wednesday will be about another comeback against the Lakers, with each of the Rockets’ past seven wins against the Los Angeles coming with a rally from down at least 10 (11 on Wednesday).

Yet, when Harden talked about the rally and his roll, the smile did not slip until he was asked about the part of the game that might have been obscured by everything else.

Harden’s five steals were the most for a Rockets player this season, two shy of his career high. He’s put up points before. His 37 or 38 a game lately has looked easy, as if he waited until they were needed and then cranked up the offense. But the Rockets turned around the game when they began defending in the second half, turning defense into offense, turnovers into layups.

“The five steals, definitely,” Harden said when asked his preference. “The steals got me the points. Defensively, just picking up the intensity. If we play defense, our offense is going to be more effective.”

As well as Harden has been scoring – and his three-game surge with 113 points was second to Kevin Durant’s NBA-best three-game run of 117 – the Rockets did not get control of the game until they grabbed control of the Lakers’ offense.

When the Rockets finally cranked up the defense, the Lakers went from making 45.8 percent of their shots in the first half to 33.3 percent in the third quarter. The Lakers had more turnovers in the third quarter (7) than the Rockets had committed in the game (6).
