Dwight Howard trade reaffirms Lakers' will to win

Acquiring Dwight Howard is another bold move for the Lakers, just what we've come to expect from a franchise that measures success in championship rings.

The Dwight Howard trade is about the Lakers refusing to be anything other than the Lakers. (Chris Trotman / Getty Images / August 10, 2012)

For all the begging and whining and scolding I've done about this over the last year, at the end of the most splendid of days, this trade is not about Dwight Howard.

This trade is about the Lakers. It is about why they are the best professional franchise in the modern sports era. It is about how they've become the most reliable sports citizens in this city's history.

This trade is about the Lakers, even while enduring awkward transitions of power and leadership, refusing to be anything other than the Lakers.

From Jerry Buss to Jimmy Buss. From Jerry West to Mitch Kupchak. From the Forum to Staples Center. Names change, the locker room moves, but as they shouted to the world on a lazy day in the middle of summer, the Lakers are still the Lakers.

They trade for Wilt. They trade for Kareem. They win a coin toss and draft Magic. They make a deal with Cleveland and draft Big Game James. They do their homework and draft Kobe.

They sign Shaq. They trade for Pau. They pick up the phone and quietly steal Steve Nash from everybody. And now this, Thursday's era-shaker, a move that other teams might not have done, a move the Lakers have always done.

Kobe Bryant welcomes Howard, Lakers 'locked and loaded'

U.S. basketball star and Lakers guard Kobe Bryant is currently chasing his second Olympic gold medal. But he's admitted to thinking about his sixth NBA championship now that "Superman" has landed in Los Angeles.

From London, Bryant addressed on Facebook the reported trade that will send center Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic to the Lakers and center Andrew Bynum from the Lakers to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Bryant said he spoke with Howard about their future together.

There are other parts to the four-team trade as well, and Bryant sent his best wishes to his former teammate Bynum, who Bryant won two titles with. Bryant also gave a thumbs up to Lakers management, which had been criticized after a Chris Paul trade fell through last season.

RealGM Wiretap
Basketball news gathered from around the net. Lakers Expected To Have $92M In Salary On Just Six Players In 13-14

Aug 10, 2012 9:57 AM EDT

Dwight Howard will be on a new, presumably maximum contract for the 13-14 season.

The Lakers already have financial commitments to Kobe Bryant at $30.45 million, Pau Gasol at $19.285 million, Steve Nash at $9.3 million, Steve Blake at $4 million and Jordan Hill at $3.563 million.

When including Howard's expected maximum contract, the Lakers will have approximately $92 million committed to just six players.

With a tax line at $75 million, the Lakers would owe $34.3 million for just those six players.

Lakers once again remaking their franchise with a big-name star

In just over a month, the Lakers have added Steve Nash and Dwight Howard

The Lakers have a history of grabbing a franchise player when he's available

The best part of the deal is who is not included – Pau Gasol remains in L.A.

Just like another former Magic center, Dwight Howard is headed to the Lakers.

LOS ANGELES -- In the summer of 1996, the Lakers traded for the draft rights to Kobe Bryant and signed Shaquille O'Neal from Orlando, remaking a vaunted franchise in 22 days. Last month, after Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak introduced Steve Nash at the team's practice facility, he reflected on the challenges involved with such a stunning transformation.

"I'm not really sure that's possible," he said, and cited all the usual evidence: the new CBA, financial restrictions, complex contracts and deals.

And yet, the summer of 2012 is feeling a lot like '96, because the Lakers are on the verge of acquiring another behemoth from Orlando and once again recreating themselves on the fly. Kupchak, the clubhouse leader for executive of the year, was at least right about one thing. It is harder to complete an overhaul in the modern era. After all, the Lakers needed more than 22 days this time. They needed 35.

Lakers become championship favorites by acquiring Dwight Howard

At a time when they felt the extra financial pinch stemmed from the new labor deal, the Lakers still understood the value it takes to build a championship roster. At a time when they could've gone for cheaper, the Lakers went better. At a time when they could've walked away with their chips to save for a long-term future, they put all their chips in to hit the jackpot.

With the Lakers acquiring Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic, they followed through on Mitch Kupchak's vow that "we'll try to hit a home run." The Lakers didn't just belt one out of the park. After acquiring the Steve Nash, signing reserve Antawn Jamison to the veteran's minimum, keeping key reserve Jordan Hill and retaining Pau Gasol, the Lakers hit a grand slam.

Magic Johnson thinks Lakers are 'team to beat' with Howard

By Scott Gleeson, USA TODAY

One of the greatest Laker players of all-time is making some pretty bold predictions.

Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said on ESPN's Mike & Mike in the Morning show Friday morning that the Lakers' reported acquisition of Dwight Howard in a four-team blockbuster trade "puts (the Lakers) as the team to beat, right there with Miami."

The trade is not finalized, but that didn't stop Johnson from voicing his opinion on the matter.

Johnson compared the Lakers to the defending NBA champion Miami Heat, insinuating the new Big Three in Hollywood of Howard, Kobe Bryant and newly acquired point guard Steve Nash will mesh better and potentially be more efficient than the Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami.Former Lakers point guard Magic Johnson thinks Dwight Howard and Steve Nash will give the Lakers a championship formula.
CAPTIONBy Reed Saxon, AP

"It's going to take some time to know each other and really know how to play together," Johnson said. "But the difference (from when Miami's Big 3 came together) is you get a real leader in Steve Nash, who gets the Lakers in their offensive set, who can be a penetrator and make everybody better.

"And Dwight Howard does the same thing offensively and defensively. ...When Miami came together, they were all perimeter players, so it took them a while. ...This won't be the case with the Lakers."

How Lakers will feel Howard’s impact

August, 10, 2012

Fernando Medina/NBAE/Getty ImagesPairing Kobe Bryant with Dwight Howard, the Lakers are poised to change the landscape of the NBA.
Dwight Howard is the newest member of the Los Angeles Lakers, having officially been traded from the Orlando Magic in a four-team deal. His impact on the Lakers is expected to be immense, but just how much better will they be after acquiring the NBA’s premier center?

According to AccuScore, the Lakers are expected to gain 6.3 wins with the addition of Howard, which in last year’s standings would have been good enough to vault them from the third seed in the Western Conference to the top spot. Adding Howard and Steve Nash to a lineup that already includes Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol gives L.A. a “Big Four” that will be as formidable as any the league has ever seen. With Nash and Howard, the Lakers now have the NBA leaders in points, rebounds, assists, blocks and free-throw percentage over the last seven seasons.

Howard could impact more than just the post for the Lakers. Among players that played at least 10 games last season, Orlando had five with a three-point percentage greater than 35 percent. On their current roster, the Lakers have just two such players: Nash and Steve Blake.

Lakers land "Superman" in 12-player blockbuster

3:27pm EDT
Lakers complete deal to acquire Dwight Howard: report
12:22am EDT

(Reuters) - The Los Angeles Lakers bolstered their championship credentials on Friday by landing six-time All-Star Dwight Howard from the Orlando Magic as part of a blockbuster 12-player trade including the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers.

The deal thrusts the Lakers back into the mix of contenders for an NBA title as Howard, the face of the Magic franchise and a three-time defensive player of the year, joins Kobe Bryant, Pao Gasol and Steve Nash in Los Angeles.

"Well, it looks like Superman has found a home," Bryant wrote on his Facebook page, referring to the moniker his new team mate earned because of the red cape he wore during the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Slam Dunk contest in 2008.

Howard's move to Los Angeles concludes a drawn-out process during which the Magic's top scorer and rebounder for each of the last six seasons went back and forth in his decision on whether to stay with the team.

Dwight Howard pasa a los Lakers en un canje múltiple

By Associated Press
Published: August 10, 2012 Updated: August 10, 2012 - 7:52 AM

Dwight Howard goes to the Lakers in a multiple Exchange

London (AP) the Star Center Dwight Howard has been transferred to the Los Angeles Lakers, in the latest chapter of his protracted departure from Orlando Magic.Howard was the center of an agreement involving four teams and twelve players, completed after the NBA leaders reviewed the agreement on Friday. It also means going Andrew Bynum of the Lakers to Philadelphia and Andre Iguodala of the Philadelphia 76ers to Denver.Orlando received Aaron Afflalo and the Denver Harrington, Moe Harkless and Nikola Vucevic Philadelphia and Josh McRoberts and Christian Eyenga from the Lakers. For its part the Lakers receive Howard, Chris Duhon and Earl Clark of Orlando. Magic also sent to Jason Richardson to Philadelphia."On the one hand you wish luck to Andrew Bynum in his new stage, is a good friend of mine and wish him well, this type of transactions happen, I as I was involved in an ever and I've been in all pools in others", said the pivot of the Lakers, Pau Gasol, in London, after Spain beat Russia in the Olympic Games basketball semifinals. "Without a doubt that it excited the team we have now".Gasol came to the Lakers in 2008 a change involving several players in February 2008.Orlando receives the 'draft' first-round picks for five years."A primary goal for our team is to maintain a long-term vision." "We believe this agreement puts us in a position to start to build in that direction," said manager Rob Hennigan.Howard had asked to be traded to Brooklyn, but Orlando could not reached an agreement with the Nets, which opened the door for the Lakers for the Star Center.Howard averaged 20.6 points and 14.5 rebounds in 54 games last season. In eight seasons with the Magic, he averaged 18.4 points and 13.0 rebounds. After an offseason in which Magic fired coach Stan van Gundy and the manager general Otis Smith, will also be Howard, on the second time you lose a star against the Lakers. In 1996, Magic saw Shaquille O'Neal signed as a free agent with the Lakers. At least this time, losing a resonant player, he received something in return.____Carlos Rodriguez and Brian Mahoney contributed to this Office.

Excited to stay with Lakers, Pau Gasol leads Spain past Russia

LONDON -- The pressures of the two basketball worlds were squeezing Pau Gasol on Thursday. Despite helping the Lakers win two NBA championships in 2009 and 2010, he heard that Los Angeles might package him into a complicated trade for All-Star center Dwight Howard. At the same time, Gasol hoped to lead Spain to the gold-medal final for the second straight Olympics.

Had any basketball star ever been faced with this parallel and dueling set of circumstances?

"It's a lot going on," Gasol said Friday night, at the end of his long 24 hours. "But I'm excited by how things are looking."

Gasol found out that he was not traded -- that, in fact, he was retained by the Lakers to form the most talented roster of his career. When the NBA season begins, he will play alongside Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Howard, who came to the Lakers via a blockbuster four-team deal in which the franchise gave up Andrew Bynum. A short time later, Gasol generated 16 points and 12 rebounds to launch a comeback 67-59 victory over Russia in the Olympic semifinal Friday.

Report: The Lakers agree to terms with Jodie Meeks

August, 10, 2012

Dave McMenamin is reporting the Lakers and Jodie Meeks have agreed to terms on a two-year deal worth around $3 million dollars, with the second year a team option. Mark Medina of the L.A. Times had previously reported Meeks, per his agent David Baum, wouldn't accept a deal at the league minimum, which for a player of his experience comes out to about $916,000. One week later, a number agreeable for both sides was discovered. The Lakers get a young shooting guard with two years' worth of starting experience for a relative pittance. Meeks nearly doubles his salary from last season and gets to join a title chase.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

On Aug. 1, I provided a breakdown of Meeks as a player, so feel free to talk a walk down Memory Lane. In a nutshell, he provides a legitimate backup for Kobe Bryant (you might have noticed it hurt not having one last season), outside shooting, and youth. Three areas in short supply for the Lakers, and now fortified. Throw in some improving defense and his natural scoring instincts and it's hard to knock the latest drink order during what's evolved into a basketball version of an open bar.

Los Angeles Lakers sign Jodie Meeks to two-year deal
Lakers sign Jodie Meeks
August 10, 2012
By: Ryan Ward

After pulling off arguably the biggest trade in franchise history with the acquisition of Dwight Howard on August 10, the Los Angeles Lakers almost immediately signed free agent Jodie Meeks according to Mark Medina of the L.A. Times:

“Reserve shooting guard Jodie Meeks has accepted a two-year deal worth about $3 million to play for the Lakers, The Times has learned.”

Signing Meeks is a solid bench upgrade for the Lakers moving forward. The 25-year-old guard will give the Lakers some insurance behind Kobe Bryant. Along with the ability to boost the offense off the bench, Meeks can stretch the defense with his outside shooting.

Jodie Meeks accepts two-year deal with Lakers
August 10, 2012, 1:35 p.m.
Reserve shooting guard Jodie Meeks has accepted a two-year deal worth about $3 million to play for the Lakers, The Times has learned.

The move hardly warrants the same headlines as the Lakers’ other blockbuster offseason moves in acquiring Steve Nash and Dwight Howard, but Meeks’ arrival gives the Lakers a solid option in relieving Kobe Bryant’s minutes and bolstering the team’s outside shooting.

The 6-foot-4 Meeks, who played for the Philadelphia 76ers in three of his four NBA seasons, averaged a career-high 37% from three-point range in the last two years.

He averaged 8.4 points and 2.4 rebounds in 25 minutes a game last season, when he played in all 66 games, starting 50.

Meeks’ second year is a team option.
