Here's a tip:

NEVER HIKE ALONE OR WITHOUT TELLING SOMEONE WHERE YOU ARE GOING...!

Or head out in bad conditions where icy trails are involved. I’m not victim blaming, just stating that caution should always be the emphasis, and if there is ever a reason not to go, don’t. We have a saying in scuba diving, “nothing goes wrong on the dive you don’t make”.

I suspect 95% of missing hikers did something wrong at some point

Good point DMR.

I do some hiking and I feel like I know my limits but even I have been involved in a few sketchy incidents when hiking. One time I fell and was by myself and lost and realized that things can go from normal to bad very quickly.

This winter Mt. Baldy has been especially deadly. People shouldn't be trying to summit Baldy in the winter unless they are experienced hikers with previous experience using crampons. It is icy and very slippery on some of those trails and one wrong step and you are sliding off if you don't be very careful about what you are doing.

Sad story. Even though the local mountains are beautiful you never want to hike alone.
I remember a long time ago I believe a boy scout got lost in the San Bernardino mountains, they never found him, that was nearly 30 years ago.

I've turned back twice on Baldy hikes. Some days that's just how it goes. The mountain isn't going anywhere, come back another day.

People should be very cautious on any mountain hikes this year with all the snow we had. River crossings are going to be more extreme, etc.
