Watching the 80s showtime Lakers in the living room and then shooting hoops on the nerf basket hanging from the doorway is one of my earliest memories of my father and I.
We bonded thru basketball and the Lakers.

Right now he is fighting to stay alive as he has come down with a bad infection after surgery last Friday. There is a good chance he won't make it.... But I just want to put this out there in the world to let everyone in Lakerland know how much of a fan he and I both are.... and how our love for the game and team brought us close. He could use all the prayers, thoughts and well wishes you can give.

Thanks, LG.

I'm using this thread as some kind of catharsis.
Apologies.
Been touch and go, but he's fighting like he always has.

Most of us older than Candy have gone thru that w/ parent(s). It's a hard journey. I hope your dad recovers and is with you for any bit longer, PLAT. Take care, man.

Good to hear. All the best to him, you and your family.

I became a Lakers fan the same way. Him watching the Lakers and me climbing all over him while he was doing that. He'd throw me off of him and I started to become curious about what the heck he was watching.

Thanks fellas.
He's still battling.
I had to come home to sleep for a bit as I was running on fumes.
I appreciate the love.

Hug your loved ones and appreciate every day. Tomorrow is not promised.

My Dad died 11 years ago. In the end, he was in home hospice care. Our relationship was up and down over the years but in the last few years, we bonded because of basketball / Lakers. He was a big Kobe fan. He would rave about Kobe and said he was the greatest he ever saw. And he had seen a lot too! Hang in there!

Moving this to the lounge where your pop surely deserves to be. Best wishes to him from as close to court side as I can get him.

That was me as a kid too. One of my childhood memories was Magic's full-court shot against the Nuggets and reenacting it in front of my dad. Those memories last forever.

Thank you for moving this, Omar.

He fought for 5 days and gave us time to process and prepare.
He passed earlier today 10/2/22.

There was a moment a couple days ago where he came to for a bit and was responsive.
My Mom, sister and brother held his hands and spoke with him. He was able to nod and squeeze their hand. He kept waving hello/goodbye. I stood at the foot of the bed and he gathered the strength to point at me ( the oldest child he was always toughest on me )

That hand gesture was worth a thousand words. I told him, "I can take it from here if you're ready to rest now"

He's no longer in pain...and he's finally at peace.

Thanks for listening to my BS for 20 years, LG. I wouldn't be a Laker fan or an LG member if it wasn't for him.

Go find Kobe so you can shoot some hoops together. I love you, Dad.

Aww man. Condolences for your loss . And yes, 80s Lakers basketball was a connective tissue for all of the Southland.

So sorry to hear but glad you had a chance to say your last thoughts to him while he was alert. Take care of yourself. May the Laker season give you ample distraction to hopefully ease the grieving.

So sorry about your father. I also care about the Lakers mostly because it's been something to share and talk about with my dad. That's why it's more than just basketball. It's something that helps bring people together. Take care of yourself, my sympathies go out to you and your family.
