Legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully, 94, dies

Legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully died Tuesday night. He was 94.

"We have lost an icon," said Dodger President and CEO Stan Kasten. "The Dodgers' Vin Scully was one of the greatest voices in all of sports. He was a giant of a man, not only a broadcaster, but he was a humanitarian. He loved people. He loved life. He loved baseball and the Dodgers."

Very few people are truly icons in their field. Even fewer are icons amongst their fellows icons . . . that was Vin.

Quote:
You know friends, so many people have wished me congratulations on a 67-year career in baseball, and they’ve wished me a wonderful retirement with my family. And now, all I can do is tell you what I wish for you.

May God give you for every storm, a rainbow,
For every tear, a smile,
For every care, a promise,
And a blessing in each trial.
For every problem life sends,
A faithful friend to share,
For every sigh, a sweet song,
And an answer for each prayer.

You and I have been friends for a long time, but I know in my heart that I’ve always needed you more than you’ve needed me, and I’ll miss our time together more I can say.

But you know what — there will be a new day, and eventually a new year. And when the upcoming winter gives way to spring, rest assured it will be time for Dodger baseball.

So this is Vin Scully, wishing you a very pleasant good afternoon, wherever you may be.

Vin could read the phone book and make it sound like effortless poetry.

There's actually a great clip out there of him talking about the history of beards while casually calling the game. I'll try and dig it up, because it is epic Vin.

Ah, (bleep). I was never a Dodgers fan, nor a baseball fan, but if I was to ever follow the sport I'd be a Dodgers guy and Vin would've been the main reason. He is one of the reasons I love LA. His was a transcendent talent. For every million Joe Bucks, Mike Breens, and Kevin Harlans, there's one Vin Scully.

RIP

Some of my fondest memories are of him calling games during Fernandomania.

Greatest baseball announcer of all time in the minds of many, including me.

So many memories, especially listening to him on the radio as a kid in the San Fernando Valley in the 70's. He brought the game to life for a kid who loved baseball and the Dodgers and I am forever grateful to him for that.

We have been absolutely blessed with Vin, Chick Hearn and Bob Miller. Truly three titans of the field, really enjoyed all of them.

RIP Vin, you will never be forgotten.

One thing I can say about Vin is that he was never a homer. If he saw a great play he got excited. Even though it was from the opponent. He was a fan of baseball first and that is why I loved listening to him call games.
