‘In public there are only jingoistic voices’
How Russia’s war against Ukraine continues to divide Putin’s elites
10:29 am, June 17, 2022

Nearly four months into Moscow’s all-out war against Ukraine, Russian troops are making relative gains in the Donbas. By all appearances, however, the Kremlin has failed to realize the invasion’s original goals. And peace talks with Kyiv have ground to a halt. Meanwhile, back in Moscow, Russian elites have splintered into three camps — a “peace party,” a “war party,” and a “silent party” that somehow includes heavyweights like Moscow’s mayor and the prime minister. Meduza’s special correspondent Andrey Pertsev reports.

There are still a fair number of people among the Russian elite who support ending the war against Ukraine. According to three sources close to the Putin administration and one source close to the Cabinet, this “peace party” is currently hoping for Moscow and Kyiv to return to the negotiating table — despite the fact that talks have been virtually frozen since early April.

Prominent members of the “peace party” include VTB Bank CEO Andrey Kostin, Rostec CEO Sergey Chemezov, and Sberbank CEO Herman Gref, Meduza’s sources said. Two sources also noted that this group’s position aligns with that of brothers Mikhail and Yury Kovalchuk, who are said to be members of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

These five members of the “peace party” have all come under a variety of international sanctions following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. But their hope is that some sanctions would be lifted if peace talks resumed, allowing Russia to re-enter international finance and tech markets.

That said, the two sources close to the Putin administration stressed that the “peace party” is in no way a united front, and that its members aren’t making any joint efforts to lobby for diplomatic negotiations: “All they have is a common understanding that the ‘special operation’ needs to end as soon as possible and [that they need] to look for some common ground in the West.”

[snip]

In early June, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin visited Luhansk and held talks with Leonid Pasechnik, the head of the self-proclaimed “Luhansk People’s Republic” (Moscow announced its “patronage” over both Luhansk and Donetsk at the end of May). However, according to two sources close to the Putin administration, the Moscow mayor “didn’t have a burning desire” to visit the LNR: “Sobyanin doesn’t want to associate himself with this, he tries to act like ‘I handle Moscow — the rest is none of my business.’ He had to be forced [to go] to Luhansk. Putin advised him to go, after that Sobyanin gave in.” Sergey Sobyanin and Mikhail Mishustin did not respond to Meduza’s questions prior to publication.

For the time being, the president's support has the “war party” advocating for a push to seize as much Ukrainian territory as possible. While the “peace party” has faith in the “pragmatic attitude” of Western countries and the Ukrainian authorities, who, Kremlin officials believe, may sacrifice the Donbas for the sake of peace. Kyiv officially rejects the possibility of any such agreement with Russia.

The blockade has sparked warnings that tens of millions of people are at risk of famine and has sent food prices soaring.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov, center, the editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, auctioned off his 23-carat gold Nobel medal for a winning bid of $103.5 million Monday in New York City, with the proceeds going to UNICEF’s humanitarian efforts to support children and families forced to flee Ukraine and those internally displaced.

It was Muratov’s idea to auction off his prize, having already announced he was donating the accompanying $500,000 cash award to charity.

Muratov has said the proceeds will go directly to UNICEF in its efforts to help children displaced by the war in Ukraine. Just minutes after bidding ended, UNICEF told the auction house it had already received the funds.

We've had the ability to immediately detect launch points of missiles and artillery for decades. IIRC, we've been sharing that with the Ukrainians from the start of the war.

Yeah, the entire purpose of the new weapons systems we are sending them is the ability to hit those targets deeper and faster. Right now Russia is willing to trade artillery pieces for land because they have so many, launching 10-15 times the shells and more at times.

The ‘LLC Invest’ connection

Meduza and OCCRP uncover ‘network’ of companies holding $4.5 billion in assets linked to Vladimir Putin

8:06 am, June 20, 2022

Vladimir Putin is undoubtedly a very rich man. Journalists and anti-corruption activists have linked him to a luxurious palace on the Black Sea, surrounding vineyards, the Igora Ski Resort, and Villa Sellgren north of St. Petersburg. But documents evidencing Putin’s ownership of these assets have proven impossible to find.

Indeed, after each major investigation, one of Putin’s old friends has stepped forward to claim the assets linked to the Russian president as their own. Putin’s billionaire buddy Arkady Rotenberg, for example, claimed to own the lavish residence on the Black Sea, whereas the villa north of St. Petersburg is owned by Sergey Rudnov, the son of Putin’s old friend Oleg Rudnov, who died in 2015.

However, all of these assets linked to Putin have at least one thing in common: they are formally registered to companies and nonprofits that are secretly connected by technical infrastructure under the email domain LLCInvest.ru.

Reporters from the Russian weekly newspaper Sobesednik first linked this email domain to a network of nonprofits founded by Putin’s friends back in 2017. Now, Meduza and OCCRP have found dozens of companies and nonprofits whose staff and owners also use email addresses on this mysterious domain. What’s more, these interconnected entities hold assets worth at least $4.5 billion in total.

LLCinvest.ru is hosted by Moskomsvyaz — an IT company closely linked to Bank Rossiya (also known as “Putin’s bank”). A large cache of Moskomsvyaz email metadata leaked to Meduza and OCCRP revealed that managers, owners, and employees of these seemingly unrelated companies regularly discussed common business using email addresses on this domain.

In total, Meduza and OCCRP managed to identify 86 companies and nonprofits that appear to be part of the LLCInvest network. Together, they hold at least $4.5 billion in assets, including mansions, business jets, yachts, and bank accounts containing huge sums of cash.

Russian forces have almost captured the key city of Severodonetsk, a senior Ukrainian official said.

Capturing the city has been a top military goal for Russia and a key battle ground in the fight in the Donbas region.

Thousands of civilians are trapped with many of them sheltering in bunkers beneath the city's Azot chemical plant and essential supplies are running out, the United Nations has warned.

Slowly means Putin has lost. Russia likely goes bankrupt by the end of the year. Sanctions will only get worse. Russia will become a bigger version of North Korea if the war last 2 years.

Kinda like Russia would not be able to fight after another 10 days back in March?

If it goes another 2 years, there won't be much of Ukraine left to celebrate their "victory".

Russia defaults on foreign debt for first time in more than a century

The Kremlin, which has the money to make payments thanks to oil and gas revenues, swiftly rejected the claims, and has accused the West of driving it into an artificial default.

Russia has defaulted on its foreign debt for the first time since the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, as sweeping sanctions over its war in Ukraine effectively cut the country off from the global financial system and rendered its assets untouchable to many investors.

Russia faced a deadline of Sunday night to meet a 30-day grace period on interest payments originally due May 27. Some bondholders said they had not received the overdue interest on Monday following the expiry of the key payment deadline.

The Kremlin, which has the money to make payments thanks to oil and gas revenues, swiftly rejected the claims, and has accused the West of driving it into an artificial default.

The U.S. Treasury Department ended Russia’s ability to pay its billions in debt back to international investors through U.S. banks earlier this year. A Treasury Department spokesperson told Reuters at the time that the action was meant to force Russia to draw down its domestic dollar reserves to further curtail its spending on its war against Ukraine.

Russia says any default is artificial because it has the money to pay its debts but sanctions have frozen its foreign currency reserves held abroad.

Russia’s finance ministry said it made the payments to its onshore National Settlement Depository (NSD) in euros and dollars, adding it had fulfilled obligations.
