Mum swept to her death after jumping into ice hole cut in river to mark Epiphany
A mum died after she jumped into an ice hole cut into a river and was swept away by the current.
Anna Uskova, 40, was celebrating Christian Orthodox Epiphany the way many other believers do – by jumping into blessed water to commemorate Jesus’s baptism in the River Jordan.
The Christian Orthodox believe water which is blessed during the annual ceremony has healing powers.
Epiphany fell on Wednesday this year, and Anna did not shy away from partaking – despite the -5°C air temperatures at the time.
Footage shows the lawyer standing on the ice in a black swimsuit and crossing herself before plunging feet-first into a rectangular ice hole.
It quickly became clear that something had gone wrong and Anna’s businessman husband Yuri, 50, jumped in straight after her. She was never found.
In distressing video shared elsewhere, Anna’s two children can be heard crying for their mum as another woman tried to comfort them.
Head of a local emergency rescue service Alexander Zuyev said: ‘The woman went for a plunge in a location where there are no rescuers or appropriate lighting in an unsuitable ice hole.’
On the same day, others celebrating Epiphany in the same Oredezh River in the village of Vyra, just south of St Petersburg, used a ‘safe’ ice hole.
A wooden frame was installed with steps to help people in and out of the water and rescuers and ambulances stayed in the area on standby.
The ice hole Anna’s family used did not have any of these precautions in place.
Mr Zuyev believes the momentum of Anna’s jump pulled her under the ice and then the river’s current carried her away.
‘Oredezh is one of the most dangerous rivers in Leningrad region and people drown in it every year, even in summer,’ he added.
Anna’s son’s swimming coach, Anastasia Lunika, told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper: ‘This is a very good family. Her son comes to me for swimming, and is successful in this.
‘But that day Yury called me. He was in tears, crying into the phone. He briefly spoke about the tragedy that happened to the family.
‘He said that his son would not go to swimming classes temporarily, but would continue later. His mother went under water before his eyes…
‘I immediately asked Yuri If any help was needed, and he said no. But his condition is, of course, serious. He cried a lot.’

It should always be a "safe hole" if it's blessed, right? _________________ “Properly read, the bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.”

With enough prep time she could have done that safely. With water that deep and that cold, that's not the kind of thing you want to be russian. _________________ http://chickhearn.ytmnd.com/
(This is not a moderator dictate. This is a comment from a user about my personal reaction to these sorts of threads.)
Do we really need more threads with graphic, lurid, morbid, creepy titles and content? This isn't the National Enquirer. We don't need daily "Look how this person died an awful tragic death!" It's not really news, IMO. It's creepy voyeurism. I don't really come here for that.
So as a Moderator, I edited the title of the thread to make it less graphic and triggering for users who aren't really interested in graphic details.
