Stupid, misguided, and dangerous choice, and hypocritical, but whaddya gonna do? Conflating individuals with their countries' choices would doom us all. But it's small potatoes compared to the sufferings that Russia's government and military is inflicting on Ukraine and the region. I do regret that it will slightly feed into a hysteric anti-Russianness mindlessness and you're either with us or with the terrorists mentality that I have seen getting bigger.

Its war. It will look very bad for the Royal Family to present a trophy to a Russian athlete should they win Wimbledon and give Putin a propaganda victory over the west.

It's a tennis tournament. That scenario gives Putin nothing, nor takes anything away from the West. It's a bad precedent in sports.

They'll be allowed. The tournament will find a way to have them entered as individuals not representing a country—same way the Olympics allows Russians to compete as "non-Russians" after the banned substances sanctions.

Crazy. How could he not find the sweet life in his later years with all his success? Maybe it'll be the kind of prison where they go yachting and have spa days.

Carlos Alcaraz upsets world tennis No. 1 Novak Djokovic to reach Madrid Open final

MADRID -- After beating Rafael Nadal on Friday, Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz did it again Saturday with an upset of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Open tennis tournament.

After defeating Nadal, his idol, in the quarterfinals, the 19-year-old rallied to beat Djokovic 6-7 (5), 7-5, 7-6 (5) in a match that lasted more than 3 1/2 hours to reach the Madrid Open final.

Could be a changing of the guard. First, it was Medvedev beating Djokovic at the US Open.

Now, we have this teen beating both Nadal and Djokovic on clay. Going to be an interesting French Open.

We'll see what happens when it's best-of-5 sets. But Alcaraz is exciting!

He was the youngest men's player to win the Miami Open a Masters 1000 tournament so he is supposed to be one of the young stars to look for in tennis.

Carlos Alcaraz completes dominant Madrid run with title over Alexander Zverev

The Spanish teenage sensation capped another impressive week with a straight-sets victory over Alexander Zverev on Sunday to win the Madrid Open and become the second-youngest player to win two Masters 1000 titles.

His comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win over Zverev followed victories over his idol Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals and top-ranked Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

After Djokovic and Nadal retire, it's this kid. Maybe even before. Maybe like in a couple of weeks. Incredible. He keeps handling every new challenge. Still need to see Djokovic and Nadal at the French over two potential weeks and days off between matches, and best of five sets.
Turned 19 last week.

Iga Swiatek equals Serena Williams with 27-match winning streak, reaches Italian Open final

Not since Serena Williams seven years ago has another woman had such a hot streak in tennis.

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek routed Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday to extend her winning streak to 27 matches and reach the Italian Open final.

Williams won the same number of consecutive matches over 2014 and 2015. The all-time longest streak belongs to Martina Navratilova, who put together 74 straight wins in 1984.

"I'm just constantly surprising myself that I can do better and better," Swiatek said. "I feel like I actually can believe now that the sky's the limit. That's the fun part."

Swiatek improved to 10-0 as the world No. 1, becoming the first woman to win each of her first 10 matches as the top-ranked women's player since Victoria Azarenka did so in 2012 by winning her first 14, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

Aiming to defend her Rome title and win her fifth straight tournament, Swiatek dominated the eighth-ranked Sabalenka with a mix of power, consistency and finesse.

The next dominant women's player?

Djokovic wins Rome without dropping a set (and serving up Tsitsipas a bagel in the first). RG should be awesome. I just hope that Nadal/Alcaraz are on the opposite side of Djokovic's draw

How will those 3 be seeded? How should they be?

1) Nadal
2) Djokovic
3) Alcaraz?

Does the FO follow the world rankings as far as seeding?

Current World Rankings:

Quote:
1) Djokovic
2) Medvedev
3) Zverev
4) Tsitsipas
5) Nadal
6) Alcaraz

Man, what the heck happened to Thiem?

Is there a new big 4 now with Djokovic / Nadal / Medvedev / Alcaraz?

If Alcaraz wins the FO this year, then each of them have won 1 of the last 4 majors:

Wimbledon 2021 - Djokovic
US Open 2021 - Medvedev
AO 2022 - Nadal
FO 2022 - Alcaraz

-------------------

I didn't realize that Djokovic was 3-6 in the finals at the US Open. Wow. Wonder why he struggles on the hard courts of the US Open.

Another amazing fact I never realized: Djokovic has lost 6 finals at the US Open. He's only lost 5 finals in the other 3 majors. Wow!

He's 17-5 in the finals at the other 3 majors. 3-6 in the finals at the US Open.

Furthermore, if we do these groupings:

Australian Open / Wimbledon: 15-1
US Open / French Open: 5-10

Yes, the French always goes strictly by the rankings.

I've speculated that Djoker's record at the US Open has to do with the grueling summer hardcourt season, and perhaps he's a bit worn down at the end of the summer and from the Grand Slam season in general. I will forever maintain that he made a mistake last year playing the Olympics, both from a physical and a mental standpoint, with the US Open basically his next tournament. He looked like he was on fumes as he made it to the final and lost pretty convincingly.

Oh, so the seeding and the draw are 2 completely different things. It's not like the NCAA tournament where the brackets follow the seedings.

So then, what's the significance of the seedings?

Worst draw ever. The top 3 favorites are all in the same half, and #1 would play #5 in a freaking quarterfinal. The only thing that is guaranteed in a draw is that #1 can't play #2 until a final and are always placed on opposite halves of the draw, and #1 can't play #4 until a possible semifinal, etc. But the #5-8 seeds could be placed in any quarter of a draw, and that's how Nadal, who is ranked (and seeded) #5, got drawn in Djokovic's quarter.

It absolutely sucks and I hate it.

For real.

It's too bad Rolland Garros doesn't do something like Wimbledon did, where they seeded weighted based on the last 2 years grass results.

Typically when these things happen, the winner isn't the player that comes out of the other half. It's still one of the favs from the top half. Only you won't see the big Final that everyone was hoping.

ATP is stripping Wimbledon of ranking points. I think this is going to cause Djokovic to drop down to like 3rd, even if he wins RG. Otherwise might drop to 4th depending on how Tsitsipas does. Med and Zverev massively benefiting from this.

https://www.atptour.com/en/news/atp-wimbledon-decision-2022-faq

WTA already announced the same

Wimbledon punishes the Russian players in order to sanction Russia.

ATP n WTA turns around and punishes the rest of the players in order to sanction Wimbledon.
