I think before you get that far, you talk to him and see if he’s willing to go the KCP route.

Who knows? It might work. If he’s strictly looking to secure the bag (I wouldn’t blame him), then yeah maybe you can land a solid impact guy in a package deal.

Monk is only 23 years young?

To put this in perspective, Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball are 24.

monk reminds me of a lot of JR smith, probably higher basketball IQ.
The kid is enjoying every minute of it. Playing along side 2 of the best passers ever is a privilege. Hope he sticks around

Monk is most definitely on a hot streak, will enjoy while it lasts.

So far in 2022 he is 17-32 from 3, basically 5-10 every game so far.

Malik is a nice role player but that would be a lottery team if a team is built around Malik as a #1.

Asset management.

If the Lakers know they have no way of retaining his services beyond this season, they should absolutely look to flip him for a valuable piece that can help them this season and beyond.

Then again, the Lakers are notorious for letting assets walk for nothing.

So who knows?

Dude was a lotto pick from Kentucky, so he is obviously super talented. He was at a terrible org with no leadership or veterans. he was smart to bet on himself and decided to learn being surrounded by veterans. Its gonna suck we will lose him but gotta respect the fact he realized he needs to mature and prove himself which he is doing

Seeing him leaving this off season for nothing will be hard to watch. But unfortunately with terrible RW contract there is no way to pay him. He will leave for nothing that's the fact.

The young man is playing well on a team that has struggled all season to find that spark from anyone but James and Davis occasionally.

I prefer they continue to develop and cultivate that player and chemistry he is adding to the team recently. No reason to trade that away for the next guy that will need to “ build chemistry”. Monk thriving is a good thing for this season.

If Monk earns it, the Lakers need to find a way to pay him in the off-season. That is part of the GMs job, to manage the salaries of impact players.

Maybe they can convince Westbrook to not opt in for his $47m and re-sign for significantly less. Because “ he really loves the Lakers”. It would be nice to see some of that fan calling for more team deals and loyalty from the stars instead of the players on minimums.

Thrilled to see Monk thriving. Bradley too. Hope they keep it going. Going to be interesting to see how Nunn impacts the team when he returns. At his best, he will significantly.

Some team is going to offer Monk a ridiculous contract this offseason.

He's only 23 years old so he's going to have plenty of suitors.

The Lakers will have absolutely no way of matching some of the offers he's going to receive.

Enjoy the kid this season because he's going to be a one and done.

Rob really needs to be proactive & shop him to see if they can get an impact player who can help them win now & be apart of their longterm goals.

That said, this front office never seems to look big picture.

His defense last night was cringe worthy. Granted he was trying to guard Young who was turning him around in circles but as long as the 3 ball is falling, you take what you can get. It just shows how rare 2 way players are.

Moreover, let's really think a bit more about this: A team that trades for Monk would be in exactly the same spot as the Lakers in their ability to retain him i.e. they'd need to have cap-space to sign him because they won't have his bird rights. There are hardly any such teams right now. So the only other type of team that would really value Monk is a team that's playoff bound and thinks Monk's production will improve their playoff chances. Then why would such a team be interested in trading a useful piece to the Lakers for essentially THT/Monk? (THT is the only size-able salary the Lakers can return other than Westbrook, of course)

You are missing the point that all the team can offer is the mMLE. I’m not a fan of this FO but they can’t be blamed for that.

Hopefully he takes a similar route as another Arkansas kid did Bobby Portis. Portis was clearly worth more than what he resigned for for the Bucks. I'm sure he will get 10M+ this off season after they retain his early bird rights.

Then let him walk for nothing. Except for his impact and contributions "this season". If he continues to play as he is and develops some chemistry with the team, he is well worth the cost of a one year rental at $1.7M.

I can finally find some entertainment in watching my Lakers with this recent solid play by Monk, James and others. Now you want to trade that away?

Lakers have been struggling and fans have been begging for another player to step up and help. So the young man does exactly that and all the joy that can be taken is it is an "opportunity"?

Let him play it out. Let the Lakers see if they can get there heads out of their asses and win some playoff games. Likely will need another consistent scorer to do it. Maybe Monk can fit that role.

When the off-season comes they can worry about paying him or not. If by rule they can't pay him under any circumstances, oh well. They have a much bigger salary issue with an inefficient knucklehead like Westbrook opting in for $47M. Now that is worthy of worrying about asset management. Not if Monk walks on his $1.7M.

Portis? Because the Lakers can’t give Monk $10 mil for next season.

Lakers Have Tough Free-Agent Future With Streaking Malik Monk

Quote:
Monk is averaging a career-high 12.1 points this season, shooting 48.1% from the field and 39.7% from the 3-point line. Not only that, but in his last seven games, as the Lakers have committed to him as a starter, he is averaging a whopping 21.9 points on 56.3% shooting and 48.2% 3-point shooting.

The full MLE may be a hard sell if he keeps this up. We don't know yet if this is how well he will play as a starter. It's been 7 games. But even in general, his skillset fits in very well with Lebron.

You have to get WB on a deal that allows the Lakers enough room to get into a hard cap situation where they have their full MLE. If WB balks on those types of deals, you then have to move him to a team that is willing to take him on as a 1 year rental. Teams that miss out in capspace FA agents or want to punt capspace for a year may be interested in a 47M expiring contract.

The mini-MLE will not get it done. I would have said this before his starting level play.
