Never seen the Lakers since Vogel became coach play so much zone defense this season, especially this early in the season.

Vogel really doesn’t trust this team’s defense.

Problem is the other teams are much better shooting teams than the Lakers so the zone isn’t really working as much as Vogel would hope.

Zone is generally played when you have bad defenders

I think the specific issue is that a lot of the time on PnR defense our bigs are in deep drop and the guards aren’t getting over screen quick enough. That’s death for your defense in the NBA. Caruso, KCP, and the year prior Green would blow up the screens themselves which let us play big more despite what that does to your defensive foot speed.

Bradley does well getting over (which is precisely why he’s getting run). Nunn and Reaves are better at that than the other guys currently getting PT, and Russ seems to be doing a little better as the season goes along. Tucker is going to have to do a way better job than he has or LA will perhaps have to look for someone who does to take those minutes.

Basically, we need a quality wing defender and the guards who can get over in a screen to get healthy.

Guards can't pressure and only AD can recover to the rim. The Zone keeps the big where we want him and the shots more than 3 feet from the rim. An improvement over the layup drill our man defense allows to the P&R when the "wings" we roll out are microscopic.

We got rid of all our premium perimeter defenders— Green, KCP, Caruso…
