Figured I'd get this started now that we're in the offseason and there should be a lot of activity before the CBA expires on December 1.

Andrew Friedman on Clayton Kershaw, who the Dodgers didn't give a QO: "“We’ve made it very clear that if Kersh wants to come back, he will always have a spot with what he’s meant to this organization, not just looking back but with what we think he can do for us next year.”(cont)

More Friedman on Kershaw: "I know he wants to take a little time with Ellen and figure out what’s best for them and also more importantly, get to a point where he feels good health wise. We have no reason to believe that he won't...This would’ve accelerated the timeline.”

Fabian Ardaya
@FabianArdaya
Friedman: "I think just with our respect for him and for what he's done for this organization, that wasn't something that we wanted to do and put him on that kind of clock when he wasn't ready for it."

Really classy move from the organization. I think we'll see Kershaw back, but not sure for how long or how much. Maybe something structured like Bauer's deal, but obviously lower dollar value.

Let's go!

I get the same feeling with Kersh too. I think Kersh is going to take a lot less than we were thinking.

Will Bauer pitch next year?

It’s likely he’s going to be allowed by the commissioners office to pitch next year, but he’s persona non grata in our clubhouse. Dodgers will probably release him if they can’t trade. That’s my guess anyway.

If they DFA him they are on the hook for 45 million just in 2022 not including his 2023 option year. Any team that signs him will pay the league minimum.

The Dodgers really handled this so poorly. Instead of distancing themselves they should waited until the evidence was in and acted accordingly. It appears that MLB doesn't have a legal case. The only one with a legal opinion in this matter is the judge not issuing the TRO stating any conduct was consensual. The PPD passed their report to the DA in August and they have done nothing and will likely do nothing unless some new facts come into play.

The Dodgers needed to handle this like ODB handled the Kobe situation which was way worse in terms of seriousness, as he was actually going to trial on actual charges. The Dodgers on the other hand panicked and didn't have their players back. And so now they are here. Likely they will pay Bauer to pitch for someone else and get back some low end prospect in return. Their actions have also been duly noted by potential FAs as a destination that won't back their stars if they get into a sticky situation. It's not pretty.

I'll say this once again, it's likely that he gets a lengthy suspension that covers much or even all of the 2022 season. Just because he may not be prosecuted for what took place doesn't mean that MLB won't impose discipline. Obviously, such a suspension would help the Dodgers, because his salary would not count on their books for this season, or, at least whatever portion of the season he gets suspended for, that would factor into how much they owed him for the 2022 season.

Of course, barring a head's up from the commissioner's office, the Dodgers may not know what will happen until after free agency. Still, I have very little doubt that he will never pitch for the Dodgers again, and if they do have to eat quite a bit of money, that's what's going to happen. They just don't want the PR disaster and would rather just wash their hands of it.

With Bauer if he is suspended for all of the 2022 season, does that realistically mean we don’t have him count against the salary cap, and don’t we have a team option on him this time next year? Essentially - is this almost as good as him being gone without impacting the cap

Here's the problem.

1) When is MLB going to decide to suspend him? Right now, he's on the books for next year. Do we spend that money during the offseason hoping he gets suspended?

2) All the options belong to Bauer. The team has no options.

yup I agree. Dodgers went full force on the cancel culture route, I think mismanaged the situation.

that's why Doc Buss is the best owner in sports ever.

Looks like they are predicting we lose 4/5 of our main free agents. Only guy they predict that we keep is Max Scherzer. They're also predicting we don't sign any of the other top 25 free agents.

This is going to be a huge drain in talent for us.

Angels signing Justin Verlander at the tail end of his career sounds like a typical Angels free agency move.

Castillo is an absolute workhorse and borderline ace. Outside of his horrid April-early May, he was lights out all year. I think he only had a couple of starts in the last three-four months of the season which weren’t quality starts.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Scherzer is likely to re-sign with the Dodgers on a three-year contract and could receive an average annual salary of $35 million:

Scherzer, 37, is a Cy Young finalist, and seems likely to return to the Dodgers on a three-year contract with an average salary in the $35 million range.

Why? He just had a terrible season and the rest of his career is unimpressive. I read that teams are impressed by his pitches but he has had a few seasons already to show that he can be much better and is coming off his worst one. He isn’t some 21 year old prospect; he turns 31 next season.

$8.5 million for a guy with a 5.83 era is incredible. I wonder how some of his new teammates feel about it. If he is worth $8.5 million how much is Seager, Jansen, Scherzer, etc. worth?

STRANGE signing. This article rips into it pretty good:

Jeeeeeez that's a lot for a guy with his arm hanging on by a thread who couldn't throw a slider or risk re-injury. They had to give up a second-rounder to do it too. And because he was given a QO this year, he cannot get another. No club option for '23, so if he walks after this year, that's it.

Desperate move for a desperate club.

They are like us of the late 90s early 2000s, a directionless losing club that lost its glamour with its flaws that could not be covered up with its megastars (Gary Sheffield, Kevin Brown and Shawn Green)

I think I really like this deal for Toronto. Berrios is solid under 20mill. I mean Heaney got 8.5..

Also think this is a much better deal than the Eduardo one. No way I’m handing Eduardo that kind of a contract.

They’re worse. Those Dodger teams had their issues and weren’t serious contenders, but they tended to have winning records and were decent to pretty good teams. Outside of 2 or 3 players the Angels have been a complete trainwreck.
