BREAKING: Senate blocks Dems’ Paycheck Fairness Act in a 49-50 vote.

Kirsten Gillibrand was the senator who missed vote.

This is the dems in a nutshell. They needed 60 so even had she voted it wouldn’t have mattered but optics and narrative are all that is needed.

The headline is: "REPUBLICANS MISOGYNISTICALLY BLOCKED EQUAL PAY FOR WOMEN IN THE YEAR 2021." **

The headline is not that one particular Senator missed the vote (probably for personal reasons beyond her control). That actually happens fairly frequently on votes where a single vote won't change the outcome.

** And all the female Republican senators voted against it, including Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, etc. This is what institutional sexism looks like. They benefit from white male patriarchy so they vote with that tribe and betray the other women who aren't as fortunate as them. This is also why all Republicans are bad Republicans. Even the so-called moderates like Romney, Collins etc. They all voted against this. They all voted against COVID relief. And on and on. THEY ARE ALL TERRIBLE.

I get this, but she needs to cast her vote. Isnt she the one who banished the guy from Minny?

GOP can accurately state that even Gillibrand didnt vote for it. Thats all they need to add to their delusional toolbox.

This is the type of crap that can cause voter disillusionment, cynicism, and low turnout.
Not saying we should throw our hands up in the air and stop fighting to increase voter engagement.
Just calling a piece of crap (Joe Manchin) what it is. A piece of crap.

Manchin will be ousted by the voters; he might as well stop being such a wuss and support his party.

He's more afraid of the Diet Koch Brothers than he is of his constituents.

He should go screw himself.

I’m not a fan of how she and some others treated Senator Franken, but there’s little doubt that she was excused from the cloture vote because it was known it wouldn’t pass. Whether that was to attend the marine corps service (although I don’t think one precluded the other) or simply because she has some other reason not to be on record, it is common to excuse senators/reps and even let them vote no on something when the outcome is already known.

From the interwebs:

The Kochs own a lot of real estate, but their best investment is the Manchin they bought in West Virginia.

Maybe he should become more interested in constituent polls and Dem vs Repub polls because the sh he's trying to prevent is very popular for Dems especially. I hope he's out of there no matter what. Because he's from WV, he thinks he's gotta walk lockstep w/ all the Rs in his state when he seems to forget that he is a bleeping Dem by title and still got voted in despite of it.

You realize it was a cloture vote? If they had been close to sixty she’d be there? This was what is known as a messaging vote. Schummer making the GOP get on record against a bill for equal pay for women. No one who would vote for Gillibrand thinks she’s against it, and no one is winning anything on the other side saying she didn’t show up. This is an odd hill to be defending.

Goes back to labor unions. Prior to civil rights West Virginia was democratic because the Dixiecrats and unions. Afterwards they mostly stayed dem because of unions. The gop has all but destroyed that (because like many rural areas, their racial identity is more important than their livelihood, and because on that front, the GOP backed big coal). He’s been offered to switch parties several times but has stuck it out, although he’s conservative by his own standard.

He's hiding behind "bipartisanship" arguments. But in reality, he doesn't support most of the Democratic Party's platform.

He voted for COVID relief. No Republican in either the Senate or the House voted for COVID relief. He just voted to advance bill for pay equity for women (though bill did not advance due to filibuster). He and Toomey worked on a gun bill (that never went anywhere). He voted for a 1/6 investigation (almost no R's did).

Look, I loathe Manchin with a passion. But he's not a Republican. He's a conservative corporate Democrat.

His Republican Governor agreed first to COVID relief. THEN he finally budged after being put in a politically tight situation.

And he still lashed out at Kamala for putting him in a position where he had to support the bill.

And any legislation that can't pass due to filibuster is squarely on he and Sinema's shoulders.

If he and Sinema actually supported the Democrat platform and not the Koch platform, they'd support taking out the filibuster.

In a very real life, affect millions of people's lives, sense. His actions are indistinguishable from Republicans.

In fact, by pretending to be a Democrat. He is hurting the party in ways out in the open Republicans never could.

I hope his daddy Koch never forgets to fill his water dish. People gotta take care of their pets.

Which is why it is important to ignore stated party affiliations and focus on what politicians actually say and do. I've said before, Manchin is a Dem in name only. That's it, he bears no semblance to actually being one. It's like when Bernie pretended to be a Democrat because it suited his aspirations for higher office. He was never and Democrat and never will be. Of course Manchin is far worse than Bernie because Manchin is an undeniable detriment to the party.

Florida bans its schools from teaching critical race theory
On Thursday, Florida's State Board of Education unanimously voted in favor of an amendment banning the teaching of critical race theory in schools throughout the state. The theory, according to PolitiFact, is a collection of ideas about systemic bias and privilege "woven into" the US legal and economic systems. The move is the latest effort by Republican lawmakers and policymakers to prevent the teaching of the theory across the US, according to CNN.

trump having his DOJ spy on Schiff and others seems like a big deal. lets see how Garland handles it.

Biden could have his DOJ kneecap trump and all of his lackeys to the point he or they could never run for office. Unfortunately they want to stick to protocols that have been shattered.

Maddow has been key in keeping the garland needing to do something narrative alive. Lets hope he watches her.
