After winning the first game of the series the Dodgers dropped the last two. Repeating won't be easy.

We're not a championship caliber team so far this year.

Inconsistent offense. Inconsistent defense. Inconsistent bullpen and now, our starting pitching is faltering

And injuries have contributed.

MLB cracks down on illegal substances, Trevor Bauer’s spin rate drops, Dodgers lose

ATLANTA — Trevor Bauer was on the mound for the first six innings of the Dodgers’ 4-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on Sunday, but the ace that the Dodgers made one of the highest paid pitchers in Major League Baseball was missing.

This version of Trevor Bauer wasn’t the version that won the 2020 National League Cy Young Award. It wasn’t the version the Braves encountered in Game 1 of the wild card series last September. That one was dominant, striking out 12 without a walk over seven scoreless innings for the Cincinnati Reds.

This version of Trevor Bauer labored. This one gave up six hits, walked four — setting a season high for baserunners allowed — and yielded three runs. He threw 100 pitches, 38 fastballs. Those fastballs averaged a spin rate of 223 revolutions per minute (rpm) lower than his league-leading average entering the day.

Ruh roh

By the way IF we wanted to regain Seager this may be a good time to get him at a slight discount. Boras might play ball if we offer them something they like..this is all dependant on Friedman actually wanting to sign him.

'This Should Be the Biggest Scandal in Sports'

The inside story of how rampant pitch-doctoring in MLB is pumping pitchers up and deflating offenses.

To understand the fiasco of baseball’s 2021 season, which people around the game describe as sullied by rampant cheating to a degree not seen since the steroid era, all you have to do is pick up a ball.

Then try to put it back down.

One ball made its way into an NL dugout last week, where players took turns touching a palm to the sticky material coating it and lifting the baseball, adhered to their hand, into the air. Another one, corralled in a different NL dugout, had clear-enough fingerprints indented in the goo that opponents could mimic the pitcher’s grip. A third one, also in the NL, was so sticky that when an opponent tried to pull the glue off, three inches of seams came off with it.

Over the past two or three years, pitchers’ illegal application to the ball of what they call “sticky stuff”—at first a mixture of sunscreen and rosin, now various forms of glue—has become so pervasive that one recently retired hurler estimates “80 to 90%” of pitchers are using it in some capacity. The sticky stuff helps increase spin on pitches, which in turn increases their movement, making them more difficult to hit.

Quote:
In many clubhouses across the sport, the training room has become the scene of the crime: Pitchers head in there before games to swipe tongue depressors, which they use to apply their sticky stuff to wherever they choose to hide it, then return afterward to grab rubbing alcohol to dissolve the residue.

Even that is not always sufficient. One National League journeyman reliever, who says he uses Pelican Grip Dip, a pine tar/rosin blend typically used by hitters to help grip their bats, has been flagged at airport security.
“They swab my fingers—and this is after showering and everything—and they’re like, ‘Hey, you have explosives on your fingers,’ ” he says. “I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t, but I’m sure that I have something that’s not organic on there.’ ”

Conspiracy theory hat on: I wonder if the pitcher substance stories increasing this year are a way to take away from the MLB changing the baseballs again. Then they can change them again to a more HR friendly version and just say “we cleaned up the foreign substance so hitters aren’t at a disadvantage anymore.” When the reality is they keep changing the baseballs (there’s been at least 3 different versions in the past 5 years) which is screwing with the game A LOT.

Dodgers Remaining Schedule Ranks Out as One of the Easiest in MLB

The Dodgers are trialing the Padres and the Giants in the National League West. While many expected San Diego to be in contention all year, San Francisco has been a pleasant surprise to the baseball world. But that might not last for long.

According to Baseball Reference’s remaining strength of schedule assessment, the Giants and Padres both have a tougher path to the playoffs. The Dodgers ranked out as having one of the easier schedules remaining. In fact, only the Central Division has a weaker schedule in the National League.

That puts the Dodgers in a great spot, especially considering they started the year having ranked out with a difficult schedule. It either means that the teams they have remaining have severely underperformed or they’ve already gotten through the toughest part of their schedule. Both can be true.

This week alone, the Dodgers play 6 games against 2 very bad teams. The Rangers and Pirates are both in last place in their division and have combined for 73 losses in 2021. They’re expected to at least win both of those series, if not sweep one of them.

In the near future, the Dodgers don’t play a team with a winning record until they head down to San Diego on the 21st of June. They’ll run into another tough string of games from there, playing 4 against the Cubs and 2 against the Giants.

Good to actually see proof of this because it really does seem like every time I look at the scoreboard the Giants are always playing the likes of the Pirates, the Rangers, the D'Backs or the Rockies of late. Although credit to where credit is due, they did take 3 of 4 against the Cubs and have played well against the Padres as well.

But looking forward to seeing how they fare when they play tougher competition regularly as I just can't see their pace continuing.

Great job by Buehler. 7 inning shutout with only 2 hits. 5-0 Dodgers.

They been lights out for sure. Gausman pitching like a true ace and they are hitting the (bleep) out of that ball. But it’s no sustainable. Posey cannot sustain this..neither can Brandon Crawford and neither can Gausman. The inevitable collapse is coming. Still though Zaidi has done a great job in San Fran..the entire culture has shifted and they got something to work with.

Weak performance from Gonsolin. 66 pitches, 1.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 run. 5 walks, 4 k's. Left the game with bases loaded 2 outs. Luckily Gonzalez bailed him out.

I want to see the avg spin rate per pitch type across all MLB teams.
People accusing the Dodgers staff of using foreign substances based on % increase in spin rate. Well duh - if you don't cheat the year before and just jump on the bandwagon you're going to have the highest % increase.

MLB should just allow some official substance and move on.

even with the new substance used today, hitters will eventually adjust and get the hang of it.

Julio Urías is batting .229 since the start of last season. He has season highs in hits (five) and RBI (seven) in 23 at-bats this year and adds to the Dodger lead today.

Brutal first inning for Texas. Dodgers scored 6 runs with 3 HR's (Muncy, Turner, Lux).

Ump completely gifted Tony like 3-4 calls (strikes that were obvious balls) in the 4th inning. One of them was maybe the worst call I've seen all year.

Dodgers won last night with their 5th pitcher (Gonsolin) and without 3 starters (Seager, Bellinger, and Muncy). Pretty impressive.

Or you could say he’s our 6th starter since May went down.

Bellinger is back on the IL ( hamstring tightness). Muncy is on the IL (Oblique strain).
