I didn't like Joker. I went in thinking about it wrong. I was thinking it was Batman Joker not the origin of the character.

I'll watch, view it again through a different lens.

Only part I liked was when he told the joke on DeNiro's talk show. I chuckled at the joke, tho it's an old one. Knock, knock! -Who is it? It's the police, ma'am. Your son was hit by a drunk driver....he's DEAD! I know it's a nasty joke, but his delivery was excellent. PHX is a great actor if not a city or a basketball team. Liked him in The Gladiator, loved him in Her, and enjoyed him in Inherent Vice (tho that movie was whacko).

Inexplicably, Anger Management super fan, David O. Russell, has A-list talent lined up for his newest project despite being a rageaholic monster and a purveyor of mostly mediocre middle brow Hollywood crap.

At least Hitchcock was a genius.

Yeah, the movie as a whole seemed to be an exercise in depravity porn. It made Heath ledger’s joker look like a Hallmark special.

It commented on the same incel fanboy group that it was actually trying to target in the first place. There were many viewers who related to Joker. They did the same w/ Travis Bickle for many years, but that's not enough anymore. They need a demented comic book character to be Nu Age Travis.

Hitchcock did it over 60 years ago.

He browbeat most of his actresses, sexually harassed a few, sexually assaulted Tippi Hedren in between shooting The Birds and Marnie, and then ruined Tippi's career after Marnie flopped, but really it was because she fought him off rather than let him go full Roger Ailes on her.

A disgusting, brilliant jerk.

Fight Club was for the generation in between

Paul Schrader conceived of and wrote Taxi Driver when he felt most alienated and angry as he was trying to express and overcome that spiral into despair and rage. The final film elicits some sympathy and empathy for Travis Buckle, but at no point should you come away from that movie thinking Travis is anything but deeply unwell.

Fight Club turns into a satirical cult movie and only the ending arguably let's Edward Norton's "Jack" off the hook, though there are different readings.

Joker is a cynical cash grab that's tamer, dumber, and far less well made than those earlier movies. The only moment of sincerity in the whole thing is a stupid, stupid gag about little people when the actor with dwarfism's character couldn't reach the door chain while trying to flee for his life. The whole movie is a set up for a bad midget joke.

Joker reminds me of the Wachowski revolution narrative.

I was just making a reference to another post there, but as for AH, agreed. He'd be cancelled in this day and age. I wonder if Showbiz was a progressively more harsh world for women the further you go back or it it was as bad in the 50s as it was in the 2Ks and even up to recent times.

Good point. I saw it only once, and I had a sense that I understood why it was so hyped, but at the same time, I thought it was overhyped. Hard to explain. I'll try again. I "got" why fanboys liked it, but I didn't consider it to be as deep as they did. And a lot of those fans liked the neo-Nazi parts in American History X featuring Ed Norton. That doesn't mean they accepted the underlying message even if they understood that there actually was one.

Forgot to mention, pre-Travis Bickle, it was Holden Caufield from "A Catcher In The Rye". John Hinckley and Mark Chapman were both devotees of the book and the movie.

I think the popularity with all of those movies and book mentioned is by those who view them as justification for acting on violent impulses because it was society that drove them to do it. But what they really should be taking away from it is that, while society may have contributed to the characters feeling angry, isolated or insignificant that they should find a healthy way to cope with it. But toxic masculinity plays a part in not talking about feelings so they turn to violence to cling to something “manly”. And same goes for the viewer who thinks “Taxi Driver’s ending was so badass” or “Durden is so cool.”
Viewers that come away thinking any of those characters were right or justified completely missed the point.

Travis found redemption and purpose at the end thru freeing Jodie Foster from her bondage, or for killing the pimps, I guess it depends on how you look at the deed. He tried to kill himself after he polished off the last guy, but ran out of load so he motioned to the cops to do it. I personally think he would've been killed by the cops w/ that gun attached to his hand (try to imagine calmly explaining to the cops that you can't simply drop the gun as they scream at you at the top of their lungs to droppit!!!, drop tha faaaaaa gun!!1 pow-pow-pow-pow-pow x 137). That aside, it IS a movie after all. Joker at the end of Joker became the pied piper of all the disaffecteds. I guess that was his true calling all along, so he was redeemed in his own way, I suppose. But it's not that good when even Travis who did a 180 in character development was misconstrued by chumps like Hinckley and Chapman.

To your first point, that's what QT had the MF hippehz in Once Upon A Time... conceive as their goal at the end. During one of their trip sessions, Sadie conceived of killing the people who taught them to kill. Interesting concept -- I'm sure the real Mansonites weren't even that deep. RE: toxic masculinity, it's still surprising all these years after that the Manson girls engaged in their part and were so thoroughly brainwashed and showed so little remorse. I saw the Tate picture years ago, it was horrible. Who knows what roles they played in those murders (Ms. Tate w/ child), but simply for young ladies from formerly good homes to do that at all is puzzling. That's not your standard young woman thing, I think we'd all agree.

I'm not into horror films. I forced myself to watch The Conjuring (The Devil Made Me Do It) I turned away from the screen several times. It's another Exorcist film.

If you like the Exorcist you'll probably like it. The body contortions make Linda Blair look like an amateur.

Quote:
Development of the film began in January 2012, and reports confirmed Wan as the director of a film entitled The Warren Files, later retitled The Conjuring, centering on the alleged real-life exploits of Ed and Lorraine Warren, a married couple who investigated paranormal events.

I watched the Courier last night. I loved it. Cumberbach is IMHO one of the best actors currently. The cinematography is stunning.

I would love a new bond set in the 60's.

It was very memorable. I refuse to believe a human body can contort like that. Has to be well done CGI.

Man...The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy. Doesn't matter how many times you've seen them, still amazing with each viewing.

I have The Courier a thriller 2019 with Gary Oldman. And 2021 about the Cuban Missle Crisis. Are you talking about one of these?

I watched the Courier last night. I loved it. Cumberbach is IMHO one of the best actors currently. The cinematography is stunning.

I would love a new bond set in the 60's.

Been wanting to watch this. Is it on Netflix?
