Former Utah Jazz center Mark Eaton dies after bicycle crash at age 64
Quote:
Former Utah Jazz big man Mark Eaton, a two-time NBA defensive player of the year who led the league in blocks four times, has died at the age of 64, the team announced Saturday.

The Jazz said police said Eaton was found lying in the road around 8:30 p.m. Friday night after apparently crashing his bike in Summit County, Utah. According to the Jazz, the Summit County Sheriff's Office said Eaton was taken to a hospital, where he later died, and there was no reason to believe a vehicle was involved in the accident.

"We are heartbroken by the passing of Utah Jazz legend Mark Eaton," the team announced on Twitter. "Our thoughts are with his family as we all mourn the loss of a great man, mentor, athlete and staple of the community."

What's up with these former NBA giants getting accidents on bikes? Shawn Bradley too, right?

Mark Eaton couldn't do nothing, but I hated him because he seemingly blocked everything. Big reason how the Jazz took us to 7 games in 88. RIP.

Another senseless death. I'd be curious to know what contributed to the bike accident. God I hope he wasn't wearing a mask.

Shawn Bradley paralyzed in a Utah biking accident and Mark Eaton killed on his bicycle in the span of a few months.

Crazy.

I always had respect for Mark Eaton, he never tried to play the fool or act like any more than he was and he was a formidable defensive force in the paint for sure.

Respects to his family and friends, by all accounts a true gentle giant.

Wow! Awesome. The most nerve racking series of that year. More nerve racking than the WCF against Dallas, or the finals against the Pistons. That game 5.. OMG. No back to back if we didn't get that one. Nostalgia... Lakers were Showtime, Clippers were Benoit Benjamin's team, and racist people kept their opinions to themselves cause they had no internet as an outlet. Those were the days!

Eaton was mobile for 7'4", at least when he was young. You'd expect anyone that tall to be locked at the joints, but he could scoot around from one edge of the lane to the other and reorient himself to get multiple blocks in a row. And he was more rugged obviously than Manute. If Utah could ever get a backup center who wasn't fat (Turpin, Felton S, Donaldson), useless (Leckner), or too short (Mike Brown), they could've bothered Kareem enough to have won that 88 series w/o a doubt. As it was, they were almost as hard to beat as Detroit that season.
