Back in the Win Column... The Lakers held the Magic to 16 points in the first quarter and built up a nice 16-point lead as a result. They decided not to show up in the next quarter, giving up 40 points as the second unit was awful and the starters were turnover prone. The Lakers coughed up 7 turnovers while the Magic shot 74%.

They trailed 56-50 at the half.

The bench would pick up the intensity behind Trezz late in the third quarter. To open the fourth, they’d extend the lead to 6 points before AD would return.

Credit to Dennis Schröder during that fourth with 13 points, most of those in a stretch where he was scoring possession after possession. After that, he found KCP in transition for a dagger three with a couple minutes left. Ball game.

The Lakers would shoot 74% themselves in that fourth quarter tonight and take the game, 114-103. The team played with a little fire in that second quarter, but took care of business when it mattered most.

LeBron may be close to returning, but the Lakers need these Ws when facing the lesser talent in the league.

Davis -- -- He looked a bit more like himself with his shot, knocking down some jumpers early. He even had a nice follow jam, grabbing his own miss off a floater and hammering. Great to see that explosion. When things started going wrong in the second quarter, he was in on some of the turnover action. “I probably won’t ever have five turnovers in a game again,” AD said. He said it was a combination of getting himself into game rhythm and teammates not cutting in places they shouldn’t. Late in the game, he finally sank a corner three. He was a 0-11 prior to that in his return. Ramping it all up. Can’t wait to see one of those games where he is dominant on both ends. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-15 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 5 turnovers and 3 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +6. .

Schröder -- -- “He’s really growing,” Vogel said. First off, you should definitely dominate against the Magic. Down the stretch tonight, he just picked them apart, scoring 13 points in the fourth. Well-rounded scoring, too. He’d get a layup turning the corner to his off hand. He’d have another herky-jerky drive for a layup, super tough to defend when he’s shifting speeds like that. He’d sink a deep three. Then he’d work off the screens to get into that midrange. Scoring on all levels. He finished the Magic off when he hit KCP with an advance pass for a three with a couple minutes left. Double digit assists and just 2 turnovers. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 10-18 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 10 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 38 minutes. He was a +23.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Back in the mix, he sank a couple of threes including that big one in transition with a couple minutes left. He jump a passing lane to steal the ball and take it the distance for a score. He’d score another layup sneaking into the paint off a Schröder probe to take a pass, Nice seeing him setup his bigs for easy scores. One, KCP attacked the pressure in the corner, drew the D and threw up the lob for the easy finish. His other assist was on a long outlet to Davis who leaked out and scored. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-9 shooting (2-6 from three) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals and 1 foul in 33 minutes. He was a +9.

Drummond -- -- Double-double, working that glass for some scores and getting setup by guard for a few points. He’d also iso for some FTs and jumphooks. Defensively, he had a couple of blocks, including a nice one in the second half to save Schröder from giving up a layup. We’re getting burned an awful lot on our screen-roll D. Even when we saw a big-to-big screen action, we didn’t switch and got hurt off that. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-8 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 11 boards (2 offensive), 1 steal, 2 blocks and 3 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +6.

Kuzma -- -- Efficient sniper work from Kuz tonight. His first three, he stepped into it trailing the break. His next one he bounced up quick off a kickout from AD and buried it. Great balance and footwork on those compared to the last game. He’d bury another three in transition. His last was a swish from the corner on a kickout. His other bucket, he missed a jumper short, quickly followed it to grab the board and score a layup. So really, it was like 8 possessions to get his 14 points -- 1.75 points per possession. Yes, please. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting (4-6 from three) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 30 minutes. He was a +17.

Harrell -- -- Monsta Trezz sighting around the rim tonight. After his DNP in the last one, he brought the intensity, including a fierce And-1 dunk, powering up after an offensive board. Huge shift in the second half to help the team dig out of a hole. He was a beast on the offensive glass, pulling down 4 and getting scores in crowds. I’m surprised he did not pick up a tech in this game after all the yelling at the refs. Props to them for letting him play with that intensity. We opened the quarter with a couple of McLemore threes before Trezz faked a handoff, using McLemore as a decoy, attacking, spinning and scoring an And-1. We won those first 5 minutes of the fourth gave him some long run in the fourth before being replaced by Drummond with 3:45 left up 6. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 7-10 shooting (4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +5.

Caruso -- -- He was not getting the calls trying to draw charges today, hitting the floor several times after contact. One was overturned as he was still moving a bit. The result of all those floor battles meant back spasms and he didn’t return for the fourth quarter. He sank a three on a kickout. He attacked with some aggression and hit a short fade. Good to see him start knocking down those midrange looks lately. Early in the season, those were automatic misses. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-3 shooting (1-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a -9.

Horton-Tucker -- -- There have been so many times this season where he does things that are so impressive for a 20-year old. He had a couple of drives in that second half where the combination of footwork and handles made defenders look ridiculous. On that second score, he weaved through tight quarters with the dribble to breakdown two defenders, then reversed around another. Not a lot of action, scoring-wise, for sure, but those flashes were bright. I’m not real fond of the AC/THT lineups with a non-shooting big that we’ve been running at times. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a +3.

Morris -- -- Still struggling from three, missing all four attempts tonight. Good looks, too. Hoping he finds that range again soon. He regained a possession on a missed FT, battling like he does. I don’t know if there’s a stat on that type of play, but he’s got to be a league leader. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting (0-4 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and no fouls in 17 minutes. He was a +5.

McLemore -- -- He opened the fourth with back-to-back threes to get the Lakers off to a good start. Nice to have that scoring punch off the bench. Hopefully, once the team D improves with LeBron back the team can flourish a bit more with him on the court. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 2-5 shooting from three (1-2 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -10.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: To open the fourth, the Lakers were down one. They brought in McLemore, who hit back-to-back threes. That was followed by an ANd-1 drive from Trezz. They would push out to a 6-point lead by the time AD returned to the floor. Good job winning the first 5 minutes of that quarter.

Key Substitution: That second half shift by Trezz was key to the Lakers turning things around. Great energy. Some credit to Schröder, though, when he returned to the game in the fourth quarter, he dominated down the stretch.

Key Stats: The Lakers had 7 turnovers in the second quarter, just 5 the other three quarters. The Lakers won the break 20-9.

Coach’s Challenge: The Magic reviewed AC’s defensive play trying to draw a charge on the break. Overturned for an And-1 for the Magic. This was with 5 minutes left in the half.

Glad to get a win, even one that was a bit scarier than it should have been. Must win today with a hot as hell Wizard team next.

DB - that second quarter was infuriating to watch. I could not believe they were getting punked that badly by...that squad out there. It seemed like the Magic took a page out of the Mavs playbook and went pack the paint and then on offense run high PnR.

Lakers squashed that in the second half - you're not gonna get away with that if the Lakers play disciplined on defense and are not doubling your ball-handler. Lakers also started being more assertive by going for plays at the rim versus settling for 3s.

Felt the intensity picked up as well. Was upset with the team going into semi-coast mode when they got the big lead.

In any event, will take the W, but that Wizards game looking like a tough one. Wiz are playing alot better than that 27-34 record, and currently are in the play-in.

Thanks, DB!

A W is a W, but that second quarter was hard to watch. Glad to see AD getting back into rhythm.
