Overtime Win Over the Jazz... With the Jazz resting players and dealing with new injuries, this game suddenly became winnable for the Lakers undermanned roster.

The Lakers struggled to defend in the first half. They tried switching quite a bit to defend the three line, but any mistake often ended up a three for the Jazz, who sank 13-27 in the first half. Those are the types of numbers you see for an entire game (Jazz lead the league with 16.8).

Led by KCP, who sank five threes himself in the first half, the Lakers still had a 65-62 lead at the half as they had just 4 turnovers.

The Lakers pushed out to a 10-point lead midway through the third quarter. Andre Drummond showed some good hands on the perimeter to get the Lakers stops and points on the break.

As they extended the lead to 14 points into the fourth, the offense went dry. They’d go scoreless for 6-straight minutes, and they’d give up the lead. A 15-0 run before Keef hit a three for the Lakers. Role players will be inconsistent.

Dennis Schröder helped get the Lakers the lead back working the two-man game for a layup and jumper. He’d also come up with a stop. But he’d miss a big three and the Jazz had the ball down 1 with 15 seconds left. The Lakers would need a stop. He and Kuzma got confused on their defensive coverages and gave up a wide open three to Clarkson with 8 seconds left.

Down 2, the Lakers had the ball and called a timeout. Once again, they’d got back to Schröder to answer. He’d attack with speed off the high screen and scored a layup.

In overtime, Schröder dominated. He found teammates for scores (Kuz for a three, AD2 for a lob dunk) and continued to work the two-man game effectively to pour it on. The Lakers controlled overtime, 17-5, and took the 127-115 win.

“We made more in-game adjustments this game than any game this year,” Vogel said about playing this new Jazz team without Gobert and their key guards.

We were fortunate to face the depleted Jazz roster and great to see the team get a W that we probably weren’t anticipating a few days ago.

Schröder -- -- We put the ball in his hands offensively and he was delivering down the stretch. Methodical attack off the high screen late in the game. Early on, some good work setting up his bigs on pocket passes as they ran the sideline pick and roll actions. Schröder can also turn that into a baseline jumper, or if he’s attack middle, he can hit that elbow pull-up. He knocked down both of those from that right side in the first half. The offense really died when he left the game in the fourth quarter, but he kind of started that scoreless stretch with a really bad turnover, throwing a kickout out of bounds. Back in after his break, he worked that high screen and spread floor. He scored a big layup attacking Ilyasova for a layup with 1:15 left. On the other end, Clarkson tried to back him down in the post, but Schröder held ground and either blocked or forced him into an airball with a minute left. They’d run the two-man game again and this time instead of attacking all the way, he pulled up and hit that midrange jumper to go up 3. He’d miss a big three next time down after poor shotclock management. (We could have gone two-for-one but didn’t.) Now it was the Jazz ball to try to score with the Lakers up 1. They did off a defensive mistake from Kuz on JC where he and Dennis are supposed to switch. Dennis would get it back with a drive to tie it up and send the game to overtime. In OT, he’d find Kuz for a three. He attacked a mismatch and lobbed to AD2. He’d attack and foul out Ilyasova for FTs and the Lakers were up big. They had no answer for him. “Up 15, that can’t happen,” Dennis said of the fourth. Love the way, he led the team today. Also, really liking the chemistry with the bigs that has been developing when LBJ/AD have been out. Good to see only a couple turnovers as they are getting more comfortable together. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 11-24 shooting (1-6 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 8 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 39 minutes. He was a +10.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- After missing his first three, he caught fire sinking three of his next four attempts. He’d finish the first half with 18 points. HIs career high is eight threes in a game. He had five by halftime, and that’s where it would stay as his shot disappeared. In OT, he had a couple key plays. With that shot not falling, he attacked off the three line for an And-1 flotater. He later stole the ball, gave it up, got it back and soared to finish a layup (he may have wanted to dunk), but his leg cramped up. A lot of minutes and he sat that final minute in OT. Some nice moments on D with that steal and a block on JC. A lot of changes on our usual coverages in this game. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 8-18 shooting (5-12 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 2 fouls in 41 minutes. He was a +13.

Drummond -- -- With the Jazz sitting their bigs, he had to go against the smaller Ilyasova. We were getting torched in that first quarter on Ilyasova threes. We struggled a bit to impose our size with consistency offensively. Drummond opened the second half with a couple of perimeter steals. One was along the sideline that he took the distance for a dunk. Another was out on the perimeter in the middle of the court. He pushed out that dribble, spun and scored. Very nice. When LBJ/AD are back, AD2 can gamble a bit more on the perimeter like that and we’d still have some length in the paint to rotate and cause problems. This team will be very long on the perimeter and in passing lanes. Should be really interesting to see. “That’s the reason why I’m here -- to help defensively,” Drummond said. Some good challenges down the stretch to alter shots in this one. Meanwhile, though, he was on his way to a 27-point game. A few nice plays in overtime, one finishing a lob from Schröder, another getting an offensive board that led to a KCP And-1, and he also denied JC at the rim. But he had a point blank putback that showed his sometimes troublesome finishing touch, missing right at the rim. He then hung his head after that and got beat down court for a dunk with 2 minutes left. That forced a timeout, but we’d get him the ball coming weak to strong for a jumphook out of that timeout. Keef hit him on that and also on a high-low earlier in the game. Morris has had some issues with post entry passes lately that aren’t like him, but good seeing those two finding ways to connect for scores for AD2. Quick props also on the FT shooting tonight. Really nice. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 10-15 shooting (7-8 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +18.

Kuzma -- -- We had more scoring punch in this one with some of our bigs back and Dennis looking a little stronger. So Kuzma looked to pick his spots more and did a great job of that. This is the kind of game that plays well with your superstars. Kuzma led the team with 4 assists in the first half. He found KCP for a couple of his threes. He’d only attempt one shot himself, hitting a turnaround over JC for a score. He’d get a little more aggressive and score his next few attempts in the second half. Then in the fourth, he’d get rejected badly at the rim on a throwdown attempt. The Lakers desperately needed that score and he couldn’t finish. In OT, he’d hit a big corner three. Their defensive coverages were confused all game long and failed them in a key moment. Kuz didn’t switch with Schröder and they gave up a wide open three with 8 seconds left. You’ve got smaller defenders in to close the game, that’s why you are doing it, to switch. Jazz would go back to that same play in OT and you saw Kuz making the switch. Usually, we don’t like playing that way, but with the Jazz really relying on shooters to survive, that’s the coverage we needed today. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 4-6 shooting (2-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 38 minutes. He was a +16.

Morris -- -- Double-double, but the scoring didn’t come easy. He sank a three on his first attempt when the Jazz tried to help on the opposite side to deny a post entry pass. He’d also tip in a missed shot for his first half points. He had a stretch in the fourth, where he missed a midrange and then back-to-back threes as our offense went dry behind him during a stretch to open the quarter. Eventually he’d be the guy who broke up the 6+ minute scoreless stretch by hitting a three. We used him as our small ball C to close the game, but went back to Drummond in OT. He and AD2 are showing a little more chemistry as Morris found him on a high-low and weak-to-strong sequences. I’m not sure how much they end up playing together when AD comes back. Good thing about Morris, he’ll fit in anywhere. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-12 shooting (2-8 from three) to go with 12 boards (5 offensive), 3 assists, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 1 foul in 37 minutes. He was a +17.

Harrell -- -- I was hoping he’d have a bigger game than he did. His physicality should have overwhelmed this version of the Jazz. He’d get some scores powering up around the rim or off the two-man game, including a nice give-and-go passing sequence with AC. He had one of the plays of the games eventually imposing his size when he hammered a putback dunk from behind the Jazz bigs. He got up for that one. A couple of turnovers in the post today, but solid minutes otherwise offensively. We could have used some scoring punch during that stretch in the fourth when the offense went dry. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -7.

Caruso -- -- You could see Clarkson trying to isolate on AC early in the game. He almost seemed to think AC would be an easy bucket, but those two had a good battle going. At one point, Clarkson’s frustration boiled over into a tech for yapping at the refs. On the very next inbounds off that, AC forced Clarkson into a turnover. AC would get a dunk on the break in the second half and hit Trezz for a dunk, but he wasn’t very aggressive in this one. After the game, you could seem Clarkson and Caruso sharing some smiles after their feisty minutes. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-2 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +1.

Horton-Tucker -- -- He had a score in the fourth where he came off the screen dribble with his left, changed directions with his left, then finished the lefty layup. Lots of growth there from the start of the season. Stable game offensively where he picked his spots. He had a drive, stop and fade. He hit an elbow pull-up jumper off the sideline screen-roll. That jumper will cause all kinds of problems for defender when he can do that consistently. Really interesting to see Vogel call on THT defensively late in regulation when we went small versus some of the other vets on this team (Wes, McLeMore). That’s a tremendous amount of trust in the kid from his coach and for good reason. He has moments of miscues, but his man D for a rookie-ish player is very strong. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a -4.

Matthews -- -- No idea what he was thinking in the first half when we switched on the perimeter and he tried to recover late like a double team, leaving a man wide open for the corner three. The coaching staff was pretty annoyed with that defensive stand. We had some mixed signals like that because we typically don’t switch as much as we were today. But notice Wes had the fewest minutes. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three in 7 minutes. He was a +7.

McLemore -- -- He sank his first three early on, but missed his next couple attempts. Defensively, he had a couple of surprising blocks which was nice to see. But in the second half, really nothing positive. He airballed and traveled and we struggled to get some points for stretches, so his minutes were limited quite a bit in this one. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting from three to go with 2 boards, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -4.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Let’s go with the final shot in regulation. Dennis had been causing issues getting downhill off those screens. After we gave up a wide open three on a mistake defensively. Vogel called a timeout with 8 seconds left, got the ball to Dennis, who turned that into an easy layup to send it to overtime.

Key Substitution: Let’s go with starting Drummond in overtime. Often, Vogel tends to go with the lineup he closed with. We were going small with Morris at C to close. But in overtime, he went back to his starters. First, you get the length back in there and win the first possession on the jumpball, but you also get that length back in there defensively. As we fouled out Ilyasova, that made it even more difficult for the Jazz to deal with Drummond. He was able to alter a few shots at the rim. The Lakers locked down defensively and were pretty much unstoppable behind Schröder attacking off screens.

Key Stats: They won the freethrow battled. The Jazz were 8-8, so not many. The Lakers went 20-23 with Drummond taking 8. The Lakers had an 11-6 advantage on the offensive glass and 15 more overall rebounds than the Jazz. Improvement again with the turnovers. Just 4 in that first half and then 15 overall for an overtime game. That’s a strong first half number. Not great the rest of the way.

Found money, again. A little more breathing room while Lebron and AD1 heal.

DB,

Great job as always!

Nice win for the Lakershow!

I am seeing some good things and hopefully this will all blend well for the Lakers in the playoffs. This could be a very tough team to beat.

AD and LeBron should be rested come playoff time.

Things are going to get interesting in the next few weeks.

Thanks DB, nice summary.

Interesting matchup with both teams not having their stars on the floor. But, that increased the W chances, so...am glad that happened Hopefully Jazz do that again Monday...unlikely, but you never know. It is by no means an automatic W but a much better chance to win.

Really liked what Dre brought today. He got even better in crunch time.

Sunday has the Blazers and Mavs playing very winnable games. Let's hope they lose them

Good PT for the Lakers' bench and Drummond to get their chemistry together

With this deep roster, hopefully LBJ & AD won't have the neccesity of playing 40+ MPG in the playoffs.

Nice overview. Only exception is you are being way too kind is stating “the offense went dry” in the 4th.

They went through a stretch of settling for repeated bad 3s and had a couple bad TOs over that stretch. I think it was 7 or 8 missed 3 pt atts. It allowed a 12 pt lead to evaporate.

Just a couple times playing smart and going for a two or getting to the line could have ended the Jazz run and avoided the OT. Lakers got lucky.

Thrilled they won but they need to be smarter. Especially with their starting PG still on the court. He came through late but it didn’t need to be that close.
