I thought the plot was decent enough but my biggest disappointment was that it failed to deliver a single comedic gold moment in the entire film while the previous film has countless of them that still stand the test of time. |
The issue (to me) is Eddie. He phoned it in. At (almost) 60, Eddie needs to transition to veteran set-up man (a la Richard Pryor in Harlem Nights). His brand of humor is not relevant to modern audiences. |
Eddie lost his edge when he started making movies for his kids in the late 90's. It's fine as a side-kick in Disney/Shrek but too self-censored as the main focus. You can feel him setup a joke and then back away from the punchline. |
as i noted earlier, he cant do eddie anymore. He would crucified if he did raw today. Even the stereotypes in trading places wouldnt be made as blatant as they were and that IMO is a top10 movie of all time. |

I'm with audioaxes. I saw the movie a couple of days ago. It's watchable because of the nostalgia factor alone, and it's not horrible. There were some great callbacks, and I enjoyed seeing the likes of Paul Bates, Garcelle Beauvais, Louie Anderson, and some others from the first film. But it doesn't offer a ton more than the nostalgia, and I didn't think Jermaine Fowler offered much in the big role of playing Akeem's son. Tracy Morgan kind of phones it in. I thought that Leslie Jones had some funny moments. Shari Headley does look absolutely phenomenal. I thought it was funny that Rotimi (Power fans will know him) was playing Wesley Snipes' son in the movie in a couple of scenes. Glad to see John Amos make an appearance; I'll agree with Jodeke in that I thought he looked pretty frail. I thought he looked more frail than the older James Earl Jones, actually.
If they make another sequel, I'll watch that, too. Pot-committed at this point! |

Coming to America set a high bar. Coming 2 America had a 20 gallon bucket to fill. Expectations were high.
Coming to America was set in America. Coming 2 America set in Africa. Too many hurdles. I liked the movie but was expecting more. It's a watchable movie. I'll watch again.
Frail is a more accurate description of how I saw John Amos. He was very muscular in his younger days. _________________ Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
