Week 1

Quote:
1. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 2-1
Previous ranking: 1

The Lakers' offense sputtered on opening night, mustering just 109 points on 46.9% shooting (31% from 3) against the Clippers, before exploding in their next two games. L.A. hung 138 points on Dallas in its next game, having three guys score 20 or more and five reach double digits, and then 127 points on Minnesota -- in a game that Anthony Davis sat out -- with six players scoring 10 or more. -- McMenamin

Week 2

Quote:
1. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 5-2
Previous ranking: 1

After posting the third-best road winning percentage in league history last season, the Lakers are off to a 3-0 start away from Staples Center this season, sweeping a two-game set against the Spurs and then holding the Grizzlies to 58 points over the final three quarters in a 108-94 win on Sunday. LeBron James is starting to look like the guy who finished second in MVP voting last season, following up a triple-double against the Spurs with 22 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists against the Grizzlies. -- McMenamin

Week 3

Quote:
1. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 8-3
Previous ranking: 1

Anthony Davis popped off following Thursday's disheartening 118-109 loss to San Antonio, calling the Lakers' defense "s---" and adding L.A. has no prayer of repeating as champions with an effort like that. He returned to the lineup two games later and helped dominate Houston 120-102, recording three blocks in the process. "It wasn't like I was fabricating it," Davis explained. "It was the truth; we were really bad defensively. We had been bad defensively." It might have woken up the Lakers. If so, watch out. -- McMenamin

Week 4

Quote:
1. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 11-3
Previous ranking: 1

Things are going so well for the defending champions -- off to an 11-3 start while ranking first in defensive efficiency and fifth in offensive efficiency -- you couldn't blame Kyle Kuzma when he actually entertained a recent question about the "D" word: dynasties. "We're trying to get to that plateau and peak to continue to win championships," Kuzma said, adding that LeBron James can provide some experience in that realm for the new guys to follow. "A tough, lofty goal, but I think that's what we all put out to do." -- McMenamin

Week 5

Quote:
1. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 13-4
Previous ranking: 1

Anthony Davis was blunt about his recent play, declaring, "I suck right now," when his sub-20 scoring streak reached five games last week. He responded with a season-high 37 points on 14-of-21 shooting in his next game, a 101-90 win over the Bulls on Saturday. "You sometimes let a guy go through it and figure it out themselves, but at the same time let him know we're here for him," LeBron James said after Davis busted out of his slump. -- McMenamin

Week 6

2. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 15-6
Previous ranking: 1

L.A.'s audacious aspiration to not drop two games in a row all season came to an end with back-to-back losses in Philadelphia and Detroit, but the Lakers bounced back in Boston. It turns out having Anthony Davis in the lineup makes a difference. After Davis sat out the Pistons game with a bruised quad, he returned to wreak havoc on the Celtics, posting 27 points, 14 rebounds and 2 steals to help the defending champs get back on track. -- McMenamin

Week 7

Quote:
1. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 18-6
Previous ranking: 2

LeBron James' MVP campaign gained some steam during L.A.'s 3-0 week, as he put up 21 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds against the Hawks, a 27-10-10 triple-double against Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets and 33 points, 11 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals in a double-overtime win against Detroit. Not to mention that he has played in every game this season. "I think it also sets a tone for our whole group," Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. "For him to have the mindset to be out there every night, it really helps our culture." -- McMenamin

Some sites have the Jazz at No. 1. They will be the new hipster pick. If they keep up their play in the regular season they will be regarded like a 2015 Hawks until proven otherwise.

Well, the Jazz have the best record in the league and the best point differential in the Western Conference. I don't have a problem if the pundits want to give them some mid-season love. We play them in a couple weeks, so let them enjoy their moment in the sun. Winter is coming.

Utah reminds me of Milwaukee from the past two seasons. A team that plays well together and does well for the regular season, but I don't see them as super threatening in a 7 game series.

They deserve huge amounts of credit for sure and I love how their team is constructed. They are what Phoenix aspires to be imo.

Yeah, can’t be a real threat these days without a legitimate superstar. Mitchell and Gobert are good but not top ten level.

Imagine if Utah had kept Hayward all those years ago.

I think the Jazz are actually more of a threat than many others, but I also look at their recent SoS and think that's a big factor in their results.

Yeah, there will be plenty of people that will try and make them seem much scarier but the reality is they have a near zero % chance against a fully engaged healthy Lakers team in the Playoffs.

Only team in the WC, when healthy that pose a legitimate threat are the Clippers and they just became a monumentally bigger question mark with the possible PG13 diagnosis.

The Jazz deserve a pat on the back, maybe even a socially distanced high five but they're a classic "really good regular season team but not so much in the Playoffs" imo.. There's a few every year people overhype.

Week 8

Quote:
2. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 21-7
Previous ranking: 1

The Lakers' seven-game win streak was starting to feel a little flimsy, as they needed three straight overtime victories (one against Detroit, two against Oklahoma City) and then a 20-point comeback against Memphis to keep it going. Sure enough, it was snapped Sunday in Denver. What really matters for this team is what an MRI on Anthony Davis' strained right Achilles tendon will show Monday. -- McMenamin

Week 9

Quote:
3. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 22-9
Previous ranking: 2

The defending champions look vulnerable for the first time, having lost three out of four games since Anthony Davis suffered a calf strain and aggravated tendinosis in his right leg and starting point guard Dennis Schroder was sidelined because of COVID-19 contact tracing. Nevertheless, LeBron James said he's up to the task. "We're in the winning business, and I've always been a winner," James said. "So, it's time to click into that." -- McMenamin

Week 10

Quote:
2. Los Angeles Lakers
2020-21 record: 24-11
Previous ranking: 3

When certain teams have a four-game losing streak with two of their starters sidelined, rational observers consider the context. That wasn't the case for the Lakers last week, as the absences of Anthony Davis and Dennis Schroder were seemingly dismissed in describing the supposed demise of the defending champs. Getting Schroder back helped restore some faith, as L.A. won two in a row over Portland and Golden State with their point guard back in the fold, and the sky stopped falling. -- McMenamin

Quote:

Second-half storyline: How much will chasing the No. 1 seed in the West matter to the defending champs?

The Lakers secured the top spot in the conference last year all for naught, with every game of their title run played on a neutral court in the bubble. With Jared Dudley already calling the fan-less Staples Center "probably the weirdest arena to play in," will there be incentive to push the pedal down the stretch to secure a home court that might not be all that much of an advantage? Or can L.A. prioritize health and rest as it heads toward the playoffs over jockeying for seeding position by sweating out results?

Games to watch: March 25 vs. 76ers, April 4 vs. Clippers, April 10 at Nets
