Kidd will be one of his assistant:

Quote:
Frank Vogel has agreed to a three-year deal to become the next coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources told ESPN.

Vogel met with Lakers management on Thursday and talks escalated quickly toward an offer on Saturday to end the franchise's tumultuous coaching process with his hiring, sources said.

Jason Kidd has agreed to a deal to become a prominent assistant coach on Vogel's staff, league sources said.

The Lakers are enthusiastic about the prospects of Kidd working with point guard Lonzo Ball on a full-time basis, and Kidd does have a strong relationship and history with LeBron James.

Vogel was the third coach to be offered the Lakers coaching job. Monty Williams and Ty Lue both rejected the Lakers' offers.

Vogel's emerging candidacy speaks to the significant influence of Lakers advisor Kurt Rambis and former coach Phil Jackson, whose opinions weigh heavily with owner Jeanie Buss. Jackson and Rambis had strongly considered Vogel's candidacy in New York before hiring Jeff Hornacek in 2016.

Rambis was deeply involved in the interview and evaluation process of the coaching candidates since Luke Walton and the franchise parted ways last month.

Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has spent the past few days gathering information among those who've worked with both Vogel and Kidd about how they believe those two could complement each other on a Lakers coaching staff, league sources said.

While Vogel will be judged too on a difficult two-season tenure with the Magic (2016-18) that included 29 and 25 victory seasons in a rebuild, he constructed a strong reputation in his five full seasons with the Pacers. Vogel led the Pacers to consecutive Eastern Conference finals in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

Vogel went 250-181 while leading the Pacers, the second-most wins and second-highest win percentage (.580) by a head coach in franchise history

Why hire one burnout former HC that saw their former team improve greatly once they left when you can have two?

If it lands us Kyrie then it makes sense.

I think it’s good although I prefer Lue. Coaching Lebron with the right personnel isn’t hard unless you get in your own way.

I wanna see Kidd spill a drink on purpose to get a longer timeout.

At this point, if it's not Kidd, Jackson, Thibs, Hollins, Woodson, I'm happy. He's average, but we could do much worse.

I see the reference to the bad Orlando Magic teams but in the same respect Vogel inherited losing Pacer teams previously coached by Rick Carlisle then Jim O'Brien and they became an eastern conference power.

Really hard to judge how a coach will fare.

I guess Jeannie trusts Phil even though he doesn't have a great track record picking coaches. Still Jeannie can't make up her mind, so she's hiring two head coaches in case one doesn't work out. Just another episode of the Jeannie and friends dramedy.

This should be a fun environment for Vogel. He's going to be looking over his shoulder from day 1.

Kidd is being pushed hard as an assistant. You have about a year tops for being happy lol

Kidd will be head coach at some point within the next few years. Book it.

Vogel is known for having great defensive teams, hopefully a modern offensive schemed coach joins as an assistant. I do however like that the man and his teams have an identity.

If Kidd can help Lonzo take his game to another level, we should apologize to the Lakers brass for doubting them.

So, LeBron is going to give Vogel the Blatt/Luke treatment until Vogel gets fired and Kidd weasels his way into becoming head coach by pulling his usual power play. Got it.

Definitely seems like a smart man. Better than hearing we have to play with more energy as Luke would say.

Right now I’d say he’s my number 1 realistic candidate.

Vogel’s tenure with the Lakers will end like this:

He staggers into a room with Pelinka, Jeanie, LeBron, Kidd, Linda and Kurt Rambis, and Rich Paul. Stares at each of them.

“Which one of you stabbed me in the back?”

Falls over dead with seven knives in his back.
