Why the Lakers do it:
- Deng is not on the PF depth chart, and still wants to play
- Noah becomes a useful center for the Lakers to play 15-20 min per when Lopez walks next year, relieving one extra PF they don't need on the roster
- No impact to cap space

Why the Knicks do it:
- Noah is behind Kanter, Hernangomez, and even Porzingis on the Knicks center depth chart, so this relieves a logjam at Center
- Deng becomes useful on the PF depth chart behind Porzingis and competes with O'Quinn who is only a decent backup
- No impact to cap space

Sounds like a win-win for both teams... Why not?

Why don’t the Knicks just play Noah at PF?

Also, Noah is a headcase whereas Deng is supposedly a positive influence on the young players.

Yay, let's change the flavor of our worthless 18 million/per retirement funded player. Does it really matter which one is on the payroll?

You don't do it because Deng gets paid slightly less on his final 2 years versus Noah ($36.81m versus $37.825m). The stretch provision impact for Deng is 7.362m over 5 years and Noah is 7.565m over 5 years (200k difference each year for 5 years).

If Noah agreed to sign an extension so we can stretch over 11 years (I think Pincus' idea), then I would be willing to do it.

Only way is if Noah was willing to agree to a significantly smaller buyout than Deng. And in that scenario NY doesn't do it.
