A 29-9 1st quarter Suns run had the Lakers down by 19. But after 41 points on 77% shooting in the opening period, the Suns were held to 65 on 42% in the next three. The Lakers chipped the lead to 5 by the half, and used a 13-0 stretch in the 3rd to grab the lead and kept it.

Andrew Bynum's first start resulted in 18 pionts, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists in 24 minutes. Larmar Odom lead the way for the Lakers with 34 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, and 5 turnovers. Maurice Evans added 17 off the bench.

Great to see the machine popping for another season. Many thanks.

This one feels like sweet revenge for last years playoffs.

The second unit really kicked it into high gear. Evans and Radman were solid despite a dubious pre-season.

I bet Drew is the best sophomore big man this year.

popM: jordan farmar played 14.1 minutes; with a +13 impact on the game.

your thread, is as good a place to address a "phil misconception."

misconception: "......Phil Jackson rarely plays rookies..."
reality: phil does play rookies who earn minutes; e.g. (newest example) Jordan Farmar on opening night, played 14 minutes in his rookie year, vs. the 05-06 pacific division winner, phoenix suns.

You're obvously a novice to the Lakers and the NBA. If you had any clue you'd know Phil Jackson rarely plays rookies.........

wags: perhaps....... however, he (did) play scott williams significant minutes in his rookie year; scott williams also played major minutes as a rookie PF in the finals & did major damage against us in the nba finals (bulls' first championship).

the reason for the "label" is phil hasn't had a great deal of talent in his chicago drafts. however, when the draft picks were ready and EARNED minutes, they did indeed play in their rookie years.

need more examples?

Quote:

1) in 1990-91 toni kukoc played significant minutes
2) however, from 91-92: chicago drafted the forgettable(s): mark randall (who didn't do much & didn't earn his minutes).
3) however, from 92-93: chicago drafted the forgettable(s): byron houston; corey williams & matt steigenga
4) in 93-94; corie blount did get minutes in chicago;
5) in 94-95; dickey simpkins earned minutes as a rookie;
6) in 95-96, jason caffey earned minutes as a rookie (phil was disappointed that Chicago did not re-sign caffey);
7) in 1996, chicago traded the rights of travis knight (who played his best year in his rookie year; thereafter went downhill)
8 ) in 1997: chicago drafted the forgettable(s) (keith booth; roberto cueƱas)

also in recent memory with regards to phil and his rookies:
1) jannero pargo in 34 games in 02-03 played 10 mpg;
2) in 72 games, luke walton (03-04) played 10.1 mpg
3) in 49 games (starting 1) devean george (99-00) played 7.0 mpg (phil's first year w/ LAL).
4) in 70 games, mark madsen starting 3 (00-01) mark madsen played 9.2 mpg.
5) in 76 games, kareem rush (02-03) played 11.5 mpg.

oops. I forgot the following for 05-06 rookies:

Quote:

1. ronny turiaf (AFTER HEART SURGERY), in 23 games played 7 mpg; starting one game.
2. andrew bynum (a baby, that was still growing, i.e. not fully calcified at his growth plates): in 46 games, averaged 7.3 mpg in his rookie year (being the 3rd string center).
3. von wafer, who IMO didn't deserve to play, played 16 games averaging 4.6 mpg.

Jeremy,

Too many people rely on absolutes.

Phil will have to play Farmar. There will be times they will need his offensive spark and defense. He has shown some superior skill to the veterans on the team. And though he will make some mistakes, he will see a lot of playing time this season.
