Doesn't move the needle for me. His right to do as he pleases. Many fans will be upset as is their right and that may cost him. If it starts costing the team, they will dump him, which is their right.

I doubt a tool like Krapernick actually cares. He's just acting out on his benching and is using this a cover for his dbaggery.

What makes the USA a great country is that we don't unite because of our race, unlike other countries. What makes us special is that we defend others to act out with dissenting political opinion or expression. Kids in the armed services are willing to die defending Kaepernick's right to sit during the anthem, and that irony at the core set of beliefs that define our country.

Kaepernick is virtually untradeble, and he sucks down massive financial resources (contract guarantees) making the decision to cut him problematic. Maybe that's part of his exit strategy. Maybe he's trying to make it easy for SF to cut him, and then deflect his failure on something other than his inability to play QB.

No matter how you look at it, the story itself is troll-like. It's a nonevent.

Him sitting out the national anthem doesn't bother me even his reasoning.

The timing and sincerity of it though is another story. Racism has been around since the beginning of time to pretend this is suddenly brand new information is rather laughable. If he were the starter and said this I'd be impressed but he's not and there's also a pic of him floating around standing and putting his hand over his heart during the national anthem so really he cared at one point eh?

Yup, great point. This is the kind of thing I mean when I've mentioned people using race as a prop. The libbies do it all the time and we can all see right through Kap too.

Would not surprise me if this was another way for him to get out of the 49ers. He gets his money, gets cut and gets to select the team of his choice to play for. I remember the Broncos wanted to take a chance on him, but they weren't willing up give up that much to get him.

Pretty much. Not quite the Tom Brady knocking someone up and then moving on to a Victoria Secret model but close.

This country is so great that it has the highest rate of homeless among its veterans out every other country in the world.

Gotta love the fake outrage. Whenever Serena is representing America and the best of American tennis against other athletes from all over the world these outraged so-called patriotic whites are burning with hatred against Serena...not the women from other countries. They don't cheer on the American or her sister, who have dominated the sport for the last 15 plus years. No, they hope and pray some bottom rank white competitor will come along and wipe the floor with the two black women who have the nerve to completely take over what was previous a "white" sport.

President Barack Obama, who has done nothing but display patriotism for America as the president, was ridiculed and hated by these same angry racist whites for supposedly not being an American according to the birthers. They did everything they could to make him out to be LESS American.

And let us not forget how individuals like Joe Louis, who stupidly defended this country during the Jim Crow era and gave a 100k to the war effort, only to have these same patriotic whites turn on his black arse when he stopped being of use to them.

How about the constant attacks on loyal Americans who happen to practice the Islamic faith? Where is your patriotism when this happens? Where is your faith in the belief that everyone has a right to their religion? That's right...it goes straight out the window when anyone isn't practicing YOUR religion or following YOUR beliefs.

The bottom line is this: Whites put their racism/racist views/white supremacy before any type of patriotism. This has been your history over and over again. Your so-called patriotism is SELECTIVE at best and often ingrained in self-interest. Blacks see it. Non-white Hispanics see it. Non-whitewashed Asians see it. The rest of the world outside of America sees it.

If non-whites in this country serve no purpose to you the last thing you do is treat them like Americans. In fact, you do everything in your power to remind them they are NOT welcome here. Then you turn around and wonder why these people hate you...and why they refuse to engage in your hypocritical baseless ceremonies like the national anthem.

There are plenty of racists in this country, as evidenced by police shootings and by Trump, but those are individuals and not representative of principles of our country. The country has ideals set forth in the Constitution, and of course it falls short of those ideals. But those ideals are at least an effort to institutionalize equality. Though there remain plenty of obstacles, this country does have laws, schools, and at least some ability for the underclass and the minorities to rise (though I would that ability expanded).

I've lived overseas, having worked in both Europe and Asia. Here's a news flash: Bigotry is everywhere, and minority populations (race, religion, economic status) are frozen out by the majority in every country to a degree greater than that we have in the USA. Our country is a mess, but as ugly as it is out there, there a degree of freedom and opportunity that are remarkable. And we are far more generous with our citizens and undocumented workers than just about any other country, save for the socialist policies in Scandinavia (and even then you're pretty much frozen in your class, and good luck if you're an immigrant or Laplander). Try visiting a Communist country. You want to protest? You're arrested and sentenced without either representation or a jury. Are you a disgruntled member of an ethnic minority or non-state controlled religion? You'll disappear. Need medicine or medical care if you're indigent? Die. Those aren't the actions of a few misguided individuals, that's institutionalized racism and classism.

Yeah, the white bigots who hide behind fake patriotism are not better than the nationalistic movements that are now back on the rise overseas. The bigots might hold our flag, but they can't take away the meaning of that flag. To them the flag is a return to a day long gone, when the greater white populace was able to keep minorities in check. But that's not what the flag really stands for, and that's where their lack of education shows. I champion Kaepernick in the sense that he has the right to exercise a protest. I don't get the sense that he's attacking the flag because the bigots are rallying behind it, but rather he's attacking the wrong target, much like his inability to hit an open receiver down field.

In other words, the USA hasn't cornered the market on bigotry, far from it. If anything, we as a country have more individuals and institutions that attempt to address or correct it. We have a long way to go, but there's been undeniable social progress the past few decades. We just have to keep moving forward, and try to keep the system from being manipulated by the ultra right wing crazies, and the big money interests.

Now… I got more y’all – yesterday would have been young Tamir Rice’s 14th birthday so I don’t want to hear anymore about how far we’ve come when paid public servants can pull a drive-by on 12 year old playing alone in the park in broad daylight, killing him on television and then going home to make a sandwich. Tell Rekia Boyd how it’s so much better than it is to live in 2012 than it is to live in 1612 or 1712. Tell that to Eric Garner. Tell that to Sandra Bland. Tell that to Dorian Hunt.

Now the thing is, though, all of us in here getting money – that alone isn’t gonna stop this. Alright, now dedicating our lives, dedicating our lives to getting money just to give it right back for someone’s brand on our body when we spent centuries praying with brands on our bodies, and now we pray to get paid for brands on our bodies.

There has been no war that we have not fought and died on the front lines of. There has been no job we haven’t done. There is no tax they haven’t levied against us – and we’ve paid all of them. But freedom is somehow always conditional here. “You’re free,” they keep telling us. But she would have been alive if she hadn’t acted so… free.

Now, freedom is always coming in the hereafter, but you know what, though, the hereafter is a hustle. We want it now.

Star-Spangled Bigotry: The Hidden Racist History of the National Anthem

Quote:
To understand the full “Star-Spangled Banner” story, you have to understand the author. Key was an aristocrat and city prosecutor in Washington, D.C. He was, like most enlightened men at the time, not against slavery; he just thought that since blacks were mentally inferior, masters should treat them with more Christian kindness. He supported sending free blacks (not slaves) back to Africa and, with a few exceptions, was about as pro-slavery, anti-black and anti-abolitionist as you could get at the time.

Of particular note was Key’s opposition to the idea of the Colonial Marines. The Marines were a battalion of runaway slaves who joined with the British Royal Army in exchange for their freedom. The Marines were not only a terrifying example of what slaves would do if given the chance, but also a repudiation of the white superiority that men like Key were so invested in.

Responding to a perfectly logical and coherent argument with a quote made by an actor. that addresses none of his points. Awesome.
