Really? I actually have been more impressed with Russell's composure over Randle's bulldozer. What has Hezonja done to make people think he is even doing better then DLo now?

Porzingis is the man I can't lie. Knew without a shadow Phil was going to take him.

Byron Scott says Kobe makes Lakers' offense 'more settled'
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

The days are rarely boring for the Lakers, even if their games are redefining the concept with their 2-9 record.

On Wednesday, for example, Coach Byron Scott said the Lakers needed Kobe Bryant because he made their offense "more settled."

Few people would call Bryant's play this season a calming influence, whether it's his career-high 7.5 three-point attempts per game or his wildly inaccurate 33.6% shooting percentage overall.

But Scott said the 37-year-old created a more communicative flow on offense, his absence creating in-game chaos Monday in a 120-101 loss to Phoenix. Bryant sat out that game for rest after playing almost 36 minutes the previous night against Detroit.

"Having Kobe out there helps," Scott said, laughing while remembering the 97-85 victory over the Pistons. "We were able to get the ball moving [against Detroit] and our biggest thing is trying to get three or four passes before we look for shots. We get the defense moving from side to side and then we can look to attack. And I don't think we did a real good job of that against Phoenix."

Bryant's monopolization of the ball has led to legendary debates in the past about whether he's a ball hog or not. Bryant, in such times, often reminded people his position was a shooting guard, emphasis on the shooting part.

He didn't talk to reporters Wednesday and didn't go through a full practice but was expected to return Friday against Toronto.

In the meantime, Bryant a calming influence?

Byron really loves Kobe, but he needs to develop the future. Right back from his old school to holding on to the past, he to move on; the past is gone.

He'd do himself a favor if he got ahead instead of behind the times..l

I don't see what Byron said that was wrong. Kobe does create a more communicative flow on offense. He's out there talking to the guys all the time and trying to direct things. Same like MWP on the defensive end. Whether he's shooting well or not his presence makes things more stable with the young guys right now. He just needs to cut Kobe's minutes by about 3-5 min and give them to DLO to balance things out. The team looked lost vs PHX though.

Man these articles from lakeshowlife, lakersnation, and (to a lesser extent) Silver Screen and Roll are so awful.

And Byron is right. When Kobe isn't chucking shots up (a rarity in general, to be fair), he's a boon to the offense even when he can't make a shot. He can still pass and organize the offense, and he still attracts enough attention at certain spots to collapse the defense.

Roy Hibbert faults himself for team’s poor rebounding
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

As he played with a nose he believes is broken, Lakers center Roy Hibbert occasionally tugged at his plastic mask to find a comfortable fit. Before shooting a pair of free throws, he even tossed the mask to the sideline.

But that wasn’t the only thing that left Hibbert frustrated during the Lakers’ 120-101 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Monday. The Suns outrebounded the Lakers 50-37, including an 18-7 advantage on the offensive glass.

Despite posting 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and a team-leading seven rebounds, Hibbert largely faulted himself.

“I have to do a better job of boxing out” Hibbert told Los Angeles News Group. “I need to pursue and keep my guy off the board and go to help out the other guys pursuing the rebound.”

The Lakers have not blamed Hibbert. They have appreciated his defensive hustle and leadership. But with the Lakers (2-9) tied for last in the NBA in rebounding differential (-5.8), Lakers coach Byron Scott said he will implement box-out drills in practice.

Lakers go back to basics to fix rebounding woes
by Evan Barnes - dailynews.com

With the Lakers ranking 28th out of 30 NBA teams in rebounding differential, coach Byron Scott began implementing box-out drills in practice to help change the tide.

Scott added that the team spent most of its film session Wednesday focusing on offensive rebounding as well as turnovers. In Monday’s loss to the Phoenix Suns, the team gave up 18 offensive rebounds while being outrebounded 50-37.

“We worked on just being aggressive and some small details,” center Roy Hibbert said of the drills.

Hibbert and Scott hinted the Lakers have to translate that effort on the court, beginning Friday when they host the Toronto Raptors, who rank third in rebounding differential and tied for fifth in offensive rebounding.

“It’s just about going out and doing it,” Scott said.

Defense Progressing, But Still Needs Improvement
by Jeremy Rucker - lakeshowlife.com

The Lakers’ defense is still abysmal, but there are signs of hope

It’s been a rough 11 games to start the season for the Los Angeles Lakers, but even at 2-9, the squad has already shown progress from opening day. Despite starting the season at the very bottom of the league defensively, the Lakers have shown some improvement over the last several games and potentially have some foundation on which to grow as a unit.

After an 0-4 start, head coach Byron Scott drastically changed his rotation by activating 36-year-old Metta World Peace and rookie Larry Nance Jr. Since then, the pair have supplied some much-needed discipline on that end of the floor. Through the first five games of the season, the Lakers were nonexistent on defense, averaging the second-worst defensive rating and giving up the second-most points per game (NBA.com).

As of late, those numbers have improved significantly. Over the last six games, the Lakers are ranked 12th in opponent’s points per game and, surprisingly, third in opponent field goal percentage, per basketball-reference.com. Their rotations have improved substantially and they are no longer allowing free access to the rim like they were during the opening few games. While their opponents have been weak during this six-game stretch, they were giving up 120 points to equally poor teams to start the season.

Progress aside, they haven’t been making it easy for themselves.

Even when they do get stops, they often fail to secure possession. Thus far, the Lakers are allowing the second-most offensive rebounds per game (12.7) and have given up 36 putbacks, fourth-worst in the league (NBA.com). Their glaring rebounding problem took center stage in their most recent 120-101 loss to the Phoenix Suns, where they were out rebounded 55-41 and 18-7 on the offensive glass.

Lou Williams tries to remain patient
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Lou Williams has not had the success he might have imagined when he signed a contract with the Lakers that will pay him $21 million over three years.

Williams has become a late-game favorite of Coach Byron Scott, but has been far from the offensive lightning bolt that made him the Sixth Man of the Year last season in Toronto.

Through 11 games, Williams is shooting just 32.7 percent from the field and 22.4 percent from 3, down from 40.4 percent and 34 percent a year earlier.

“He knows he’s not shooting the ball like he wants to shoot it,” Scott said, “but we want to keep doing what we’re doing, because he’ll get comfortable in the offense.”

If there’s one teammate who can relate to Williams’ struggles, it’s the Lakers’ other freewheeling, fire-at-will reserve, Nick Young.

“We’ve talked about that a lot,” Young said. “I told him I went through the same thing last year. It happened.”

While Williams was posting career-best numbers north of the border last season, Young was struggling to adapt to a new offensive system in his hometown. Armed with a multiyear contract of his own, Young posted the worst numbers of his career as the Lakers went 21-61.

“It’s hard because Byron demands so much,” Young said.

One Step Forward, Two Steps Back
by Hannah Kulik - lakeshowlife.com

With every positive step the Lakers take, it seems like they take even more steps back. Byron Scott’s attempt to fix this may prove to be a season long struggle.

The Lakers played their second set of back-to-back games in a week, using an improved defensive effort to defeat the Detroit Pistons at home followed by a lackadaisical road loss to the Phoenix Suns. It was an inexcusable lack of effort, rather than fatigue, that was accountable for the poor showing against the Suns.

Kobe Bryant was present for the win but absent for the loss, and therein lies part of the problem. So desperate was Byron Scott to secure a win against Detroit that he played Bryant an alarming 36 minutes, and he was so sore afterwards that he could not even make the trip to Phoenix the next day. Bryant continued his inefficient shooting against the Pistons, making his now routine 6 of 19 shots, but he nearly had double digit assists and rebounds and was instrumental down the stretch.

When Bryant is around, the other players will always defer to him and never learn to fully assert themselves, in turn stunting their development. Then, when Bryant is out, the players are forced to adjust and the rotation changes. The net effect is uncertainty and inconsistency, which is likely to plague the team all year just as it did last season with Bryant in and out of the line-up.

On the positive side, certain players had strong showings the past two games.

Becky Hammon Could be a Perfect Fit in Los Angeles
by Anthony Yassa - lakeshowlife.com

Comparing the Lakers to the Spurs in recent years is like comparing a Model-T to a Ferrari.

One team is in constant motion, with the ball zipping across the court in perfect harmony with the players. The other is clunky, with inconsistency being their defining characteristic.

Entire plays go by with little to no movement, although there are other plays where their players flash the potential and talent that they clearly possess. Play after play ends with contested jumpers, with players constantly confused about where to go and how to play within such a broken offense.

Although Becky Hammon is far from the architect of the Spurs brilliance, it would be difficult to argue that she hasn’t learned from the best. Gregg Popovich has built one of the most successful franchises in the sports world. The brilliance of the Spurs’ organization goes far beyond their on-court efficiency. In terms of drafting, few teams can even be mentioned in the same sentence as the team that found Tony Parker with the 28th pick, and Manu Ginobili with the 57th.

The Spurs also excel at developing young talent, as is evidenced by Kawhi Leonard‘s rapid rise to stardom. Danny Green and Patty Mills are just further examples of players who were developed with the Spurs into terrific players. However, her experience in the Spurs organization is far from her only experience with the sport.

Hammon had already completed a prolific career as a basketball player, playing in the WNBA and the Olympics, before she became involved with coaching. Hammon was given the opportunity to learn from the Spurs’ staff while she was recovering from a torn ACL injury. During this time she impressed Gregg Popovich enough for him to offer her a full-time assistant position, making her the first female to hold such a position.

Becky Hammon quickly earned the respect and trust of Popovich, as he gave her the responsibility of coaching the organization’s summer league team. While other teams relied on their lottery picks and second-year players, Hammon faced the task of organizing a team that included no lottery picks. The only returning player from the Spurs actual roster was Kyle Anderson, who was the last pick in the first round last year.

Despite these disadvantages, Becky Hammon was able to orchestrate a coherent and effective gameplan, a rarity in the NBA’s chaotic summer league. In a tournament against teams like the Minnesota Timberwolves and Philadelphia 76ers, squads loaded with lottery picks, the shorthanded Spurs were still able to compete. Her coaching acumen, and her ability to put players in position to succeed, resulted in the Spurs reaching, and ultimately winning, the Summer League championship.

Metta World Peace is considering a career in coaching
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

The Los Angeles Lakers kept 16-year NBA veteran Metta World Peace on their final 15-man roster due in large part to the mentor role he provides. World Peace spent the summer working out with the Lakers' 2014 first round draft pick Julius Randle at the Lakers facility, time that Randle credits with helping him get into the best shape of his life.

According to the latest column from Baxter Holmes of ESPN, World Peace's coaching aspirations may not end with Randle. Holmes writes that World Peace is "considering" a career in coaching. This is not the first time Metta has spoken to Holmes about coaching, telling him in October after making the Lakers' final roster that he thought "It would be fun... I mean, who wouldn't want to be a coach? It's a great life." Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports additionally reported that the Lakers' "long term plan" was to transition World Peace into an coaching spot.

The Lakers are not the only ones who think World Peace has a future as a coach. One of the NBA's best current coaches, former coach of World Peace with the Indiana Pacers, and current Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle also raved about Metta's coaching potential to Holmes:

Marcelo Huertas Not Working Out
by Keith Rivas - lasportshub.com

As Scott Davis of Yahoo! Finance points out, Marcelo Huertas is all things wrong with Los Angeles.

Being a 32-year old rookie is hard enough, but grace for failure to meet a certain standard of play is not what the Lakers need and will not fix any of their current or bigger problems.

And trust me, they’ve got bigger fish to fry.

This season, Marcelo Huertas is barely giving the team three points and three assists when he’s on the floor — and he’s not even gotten playing time in every game this season.

If nothing else, it really feels as if Huertas is just a distraction for the young team trying to find their identity.

Yes, he’s technically a rookie, but he’s not clueless, and he knows full well what system his game works best in.

Understandably, the Lakers brought him to the roster from over yonder to try and bring some spark to a team with a lot to look forward to if groomed correctly.

Instead, like Huertas, it looks like all they got out of it was broken ankles:

Byron Scott softens criticism of Lakers' effort in Monday's loss to Suns
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

Byron Scott’s season has at times been an outward struggle to balance the patience required to develop young players, and the win-now mentality coaches need to survive.

On Thursday, the Lakers coach was the gentler, more understanding version of himself, cutting his players some slack for the 120-101 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Monday.

At the time, Scott was boiling. He said his team needed to “man up.”

Three days later, Scott said: “As mad as I was about the way we played the last game … I also have to go back and look at the schedule we just got through.”

The Lakers were playing their second game of a back-to-back on the heels of a five-game, nine-day trip.

“I thought the road trip had a toll on us,” Scott said.

On Monday night, Scott said using the back-to-back as an excuse for the most lopsided loss of the season was “a bunch of crap.”

The Lakers are 2-9 entering Friday’s game against the Toronto Raptors, when Kobe Bryant is expected to return to the lineup.

With the loss to Phoenix, Scott said, “I don’t think we took that big of a step back, to be honest with you.”

The Lakers went through a full practice Thursday, complete with three-on-three and five-on-five drills. Bryant, however, was a limited participant.

Film Breakdown: The Lakers' defense is giving up way too many open three-pointers
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com

The Lakers' defense has been bad, but they look lost trying to defend against pick-and-roll penetration.

The Los Angeles Lakers' defense is horrible. Again. They're allowing 105.7 points per 100 possessions, according to NBA.com, which is bottom-five in the league currently. The worst part? After reviewing every three-point attempt taken against them, that number should be significantly worse.

There are several issues with the Lakers' defense, but watching every possession play out made it glaring just how many open threes the team gives up every night. For the most part those open attempts have rimmed out, yet despite the luck of the bounce on those bad defensive possessions, the Lakers still only have two wins on the year.

The defense is constantly collapsing into the paint as a team, leaving players on the perimeter so open they have enough time to make sure their feet are behind the line. D'Angelo Russell, Metta World Peace, Jordan Clarkson and Lou Williams are the biggest culprits of ball-watching and drifting into the paint. It's not solely on that group, but their decision making is being put to the test by teams and they're failing currently.

This is a example of the kind of mistakes we're seeing often from Russell:

Comparing D'Angelo Russell and Emmanuel Mudiay's rookie seasons
by Harrison Faigen - silverscreenandroll.com

What do the stats and film say about the two most highly selected point guards in the 2015 NBA Draft.

Declaring which player's are the "busts" and "steals" of each NBA draft has been a national past time for about as long as people cared about the NBA draft. Our 24/7 sports talk cycle has just led to this process being more of a rush than usual. Not even a quarter of a way into their rookie campaigns, some analysts are rushing to judge which teams made the "right" and "wrong" draft picks.

This rush to judgement has left the Los Angeles Lakers' D'Angelo Russell in a bit of a tough spot. Not playing heavy minutes and having the ball taken out of his hands by the numerous veteran guards on the Lakers, while also having his on-court role yanked around, has not led to a statistically impressive season for the highly touted rookie. Making matters worse, Emmanuel Mudiay, the next point guard selected after Russell, has put up solid averages in his rookie season, leading some to already declare the Lakers made the wrong choice.

If you dig into the numbers, you can see things are not quite that simple. Emmanuel Mudiay has been given the full keys to the Denver Nuggets' offense, leading the team in usage rate with a whopping 27.1 percentage of Denver's possessions ending in a shot, assist, turnover, or drawn foul from him while he is on the floor. The next closest Nugget is Danilo Gallinari (21.4). Denver head coach Mike Malone is going to ride or die with Mudiay's mistakes while giving him space to develop.

Compare that to Lakers head coach Byron Scott, who has openly talked about putting wins ahead of the development of his young players. If Malone has given Mudiay the freedom to drive the Nuggets offense wherever he sees fit, Scott has barely given Russell his learner's permit.

D'Angelo Russell is doing good work in pick-and-rolls; notes, stats and more
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com

D'Angelo Russell has looked comfortable operating out of pick-and-rolls. Some interesting findings.

D'Angelo Russell is a point guard, which means the pick-and-roll is and will always be his best friend. The Los Angeles Lakers have been starved for talent at this position, a wound they tried to bandage with Steve Nash and are now in transition to handing off to the No. 2 pick out of Ohio State.

The Lakers are putting up just 97.5 points per 100 possessions, according to NBA.com, which puts them in the bottom-three of the league through the first stretch of the season. That number drops to 95.8 points per 100 when Russell's on the court, so things are far from smooth while he's on the floor. Ultimately he needs more time -- not an increease in minutes per game tomorrow, but weeks, months, and years.

Still, where he's made a good mark is his shooting from mid-range, particularly on the left side of the court. Many of these makes are coming out of that handy pick-and-roll, where he looks as smooth as advertised when he pulls up for a jumper. 48 of D'Angelo's 105 points this season are from field goals taken while he is the pick-and-roll ball-handler, according to NBA.com. Creating separation to the rim on drives might be something we don't see often from him, but that pull-up jumper is where he can attack defenders right now:

Nick Young looks to boost younger players while waiting for his breakthrough
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

Nick Young is gripping three beverage bottles in one hand, an impressive feat while he extends his other hand as a greeting.

One bottle is a healthy coconut-pineapple concoction ("my protein," he says), another is root beer ("my sugar") and the third is plain old water ("my hydration").

It's not direct symbolism for the Lakers, but there's something there, a balancing act among the young, old and in-between players such as Young.

The self-proclaimed "Swaggy P" is off to an average start. His 10.3 points per game are neither here nor there as the Lakers stumble to a 2-9 start.

His accuracy is notable, 43.4% from three-point range, but his minutes are nominal, down to 20.4 a game.

Young was scoreless against Dallas last week and averaged 12 points in two games since then, indicative of his so-so season.

"I'm trying to still find joy in it but at the same time we need to get a lot more wins," Young said Thursday. "We gave away a lot of games and you can feel the atmosphere slipping a little bit. I'm just trying to keep my spirits right and keep everybody in a positive mood.

"It's tough, especially these young guys losing and seeing the media not talk about it the right way. I've been there last year, I'm here to talk to them this year."

Nick Young Helping Lou Williams Through Struggles
by Cody Williams - lakeshowlife.com

Nick Young offers Lou Williams advice amidst shooting woes

If there were signs of hope for the Los Angeles Lakers heading into the 2015-16 NBA season, one of the largest would be the signing of reigning Sixth Man of the Year in Lou Williams. For the Toronto Raptors last season, Williams was instant offense off of the bench and, though he was never going to address the Lakers’ defensive struggles, he brought the potential of a veteran guard capable of carrying the offense for stretches.

However, that hasn’t been the case through the first 11 games of the Lakers season. While Williams has never been the bastion of efficient offense, he’s at an all-time low in his first run in Los Angeles. His previous career low in terms of field goal percentage was back in the 2008-09 season when he shot only 39.8 percent from the floor. Through 11 games with the Lakers, Williams is only converting on 33 percent of his attempts and an abysmal 22.9 percent of his three-point attempts (ESPN.com).

Williams isn’t unaware of his struggles and, by all accounts, isn’t please with it in the slightest. Lakers head coach Byron Scott said on Thursday that Williams is incredibly frustrated, but is trying to work through it:

Lou Williams on Larry Nance Jr. "Better Dunker Than Blake Griffin"
by Eric Yee - lakeshowlife.com

On Wednesday, Lakers reporter Mike Trudell sat down with shooting guard Lou Williams for an insightful “Lakers Voices” interview. From Nick Young‘s comedy to Larry Nance Jr.‘s dunks, they discussed it all.

Lou Williams was the Los Angeles Lakers biggest signing of the offseason. Coming off of a year where he won Sixth Man of the Year honors, expectations were high for Sweet Lou.

The season has gotten off to a rocky start but here’s some interesting takeaways from his sit down with Mike Trudell.

If you don’t have time to watch the whole interview the biggest takeaway is that Lou Williams is a scholar of the game. Williams is eloquent and supports his opinions with sound information. If he says something, he means it.

For example, when discussing rookie dunking sensation Larry Nance Jr, Williams outspokenly said,

Quote:
I think he’s a better dunker than Blake Griffin. I mean Blake dunks on people and is nasty but if you give him head up Larry Nance will.. I mean, they got to do their history, do their homework, look up Larry’s dad and then you tell me..

Just dunking, take everybody off the court… take Larry Nance every time. He’s a better dunker than Blake…. He dunks on somebody every day in practice… That Ezeli dunk, he’s probably done that once a week

Jordan Clarkson Has Officially Emerged as Lakers' Best Player
by Michael Pina - bleacherreport.com

Thanks to his nifty bag of floaters, efficient mid-range game and out-of-the-blue three-point accuracy, Jordan Clarkson has quietly become the best player on the Los Angeles Lakers.

As it stands, that particular label lacks the prestige it once did, but Clarkson’s blooming gifts have glimmered within the darkness of Los Angeles’ 2-9 start. In a slightly different role from his rookie season, the second-round pick is even more dynamic in year two, as a pure scorer who ends plays from just about any spot on the court.

As the Lakers’ current leader in total minutes, shots and points, Clarkson doubles as one of the most effective scorers in the entire league. According to Basketball-Reference.com, among players who average at least 30 minutes per game, Clarkson is one of four who are making at least 44 percent of their threes and 45 percent of their overall field goals.

According to NBA.com, as a pick-and-roll ball-handler, Clarkson is more efficient than Jimmy Butler, Bradley Beal, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul and Tony Parker (on equal or more attempts). As a spot-up shooter who is knocking down 48.4 percent of his catch-and-shoot threes, he’s averaging more points per possession than Kyle Korver and Dirk Nowitzki.

“I’m trying to knock down the open ones,” he said. “The easy ones when I have the opportunity, worrying about taking good shots instead of bad shots. … I’m continuing to grow in that area.”

He’s clearly in good company, even if very little of his influence has improved the Lakers’ all-around sorrows. They have the third-worst offense in basketball and score at an even lower rate with Clarkson on the court. But his rapid development can’t be overlooked.
