Kevin Durant Addresses Lakers Rumors In 2016 NBA Free Agency
by Dan Duangdao - lakersnation.com

Heading into the 2015-16 NBA season, Kevin Durant returns to the Oklahoma City Thunder after suffering a season-ending injury. While Durant’s focus will be on winning a championship, he will be surrounded with questions regarding his upcoming free agency.

During training camp, Durant addressed a report about the Los Angeles Lakers being his main destination if he leaves the Thunder. When asked about the report, Durant said the following to Anthony Slater of The Oklahoman:

"I don't talk to Stephen A Smith at all. No one in my family, my friends do. So he's lying."

Wait, so he didn't come out and say that it was true and that he wanted to leave OKC and join the Lakers in Hawaii right now?

Maybe he, like many of us, would like to be in Hawaii. From that to being a Laker is a big difference.

Lakers nurse injuries to Russell, Young, World Peace
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The Lakers ran up and down the court. They traded baskets. They fouled. They made defensive stops.

But what became more captivating on the fourth day of the Lakers’ training camp Friday at Stan Sheriff Center involved the players not on the court.

Kobe Bryant, D’Angelo Russell and Metta World Peace each sat on chairs at the end of the baseline.

Bryant completed light shooting drills before sitting out the rest of the Lakers’ two-hour practice. Russell practiced for only 15 minutes before experiencing pain surrounding a blister on his bruised right foot. World Peace has missed the past two practices over what Lakers coach Byron Scott attributed to pain in one of his calf muscles, though it was not immediately clear which one.

Then Lakers forward Nick Young suffered back spasms at the end of the scrimmage.

That might conjure up images of last seasons’s nightmare when the Lakers missed an NBA-record 324 games because of various injuries.

Lakers coach Byron Scott downplayed those reminders.

D’Angelo Russell, Jordan Clarkson forming close bond
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

The call came unexpectedly. The Lakers informed D’Angelo Russell they wanted to host him for a second draft workout, his playmaking and confidence at the point guard spot intriguing the team’s front office enough to consider him instead of a prized big man (Jahlil Okafor).

But even if the interest felt flattering, Russell still wondered aloud about the Lakers’ interest. He remained well aware of Jordan Clarkson’s emergence as a member on the NBA’s All-Rookie First team after starting 38 of the Lakers’ last 39 games at the same position.

“He already assumed we had a ball-handling guard,” Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak recalled. “Our position with him was, ‘The reason we’re bringing you in a second time is we feel like you can play together.’ He was taken aback. He said, ‘Really?’ We said, ‘Really. That’s why we’re bringing you in a second time. We feel you guys can play together.’”

The Lakers’ instincts appear correct.

Clarkson immediately welcomed Russell with open arms after the Lakers selected him second overall. During Summer League play, Russell’s pass-first mentality complemented Clarkson’s quest to score. And through four days of training camp here at Stan Sheriff Center, the two often have dined together after practice.

Even before the Lakers drafted Russell, Clarkson never showed any hint of insecurity that such a move could leave his job security vulnerable.

“To win, you have to have great players around you,” Clarkson told Los Angeles News Group. “That’s my biggest thing. This is a five-man sport. You can’t win by yourself. Maybe back in the day when (Kobe Bryant) was doing his thing. But he had pieces around him, too.”

Sounds like a simple concept. But the business end in professional sports can complicate things.

Friendship is key to on-court chemisty for Lakers guards Jordan Clarkson, D'Angelo Russell
by Robert Casillas - ocregister.com

Pictures posted to Instagram over the summer showed Jordan Clarkson and rookie D’Angelo Russell dining around Los Angeles. They were spotted at a Sparks game and, along with Julius Randle, coached in a celebrity basketball game.

During business hours, however, Clarkson and Russell spent a lot of time training together at the Lakers’ practice facility.

“We hang a lot off the court,” Clarkson said, “so it kind of makes stuff easy on the court.”

The two have spent so much time together, palling around Honolulu since the Lakers arrived for training camp, that it’s no surprise they have looked so comfortable playing side-by-side in scrimmages seen by the media.

“I feel like it starts off the court,” Russell said at Monday’s media day. “We hang out a lot. Whenever he’s doing something, he’ll call me, and it’s vice versa.”

That two of the organization’s young players get along so well brought a smile to the face of Coach Byron Scott, who said their “chemistry is undeniable.”

Russell sat out most of Friday’s practice at the Stan Sheriff Center as he continued to be bothered by a bone bruise on his right foot. While a minor, short-term concern, the overall forecast for Russell alongside Clarkson has been overwhelmingly positive.

Any concerns about a redundancy of skill between two ball dominant guards have been shrugged off.

“I think a lot of that is because a lot of times in the offense,” Scott said, “it isn’t necessarily a point guard, it’s just guards. Both guys have got to be able to play both positions.”

In scrimmages, Russell and Clarkson have almost always been on the same team. While Scott hasn’t committed to any starters, it’s widely expected Russell, the No. 2 pick in June’s draft, will be given a chance to run the team from Day One.

Clarkson, of course, will be right there with him.

2015-16 Lakers Training Camp Recap: Day 4
by Serena Winters - lakersnation.com

The Los Angeles Lakers were short a couple bodies for Day 4 of training camp in Hawaii. D’Angelo Russell participated in approximately the first 15 minutes of practice, the non-competitive drills, dealing with both a bone bruise and a blister, but expects to be ready for practice tomorrow, as well as play in the Lakers first preseason game on Sunday.

Metta World Peace sat out of practice with a calf strain, which Byron Scott says has definitely limited him during training camp. Nick Young experienced back spasms at the end of practice, but Scott expects him to be fine for Saturday’s practice.

Kobe Bryant did not participate in the formal parts of practice and limited himself to shooting, for preventive reasons. Asked whether Bryant will play in the Lakers game against the Utah Jazz, Scott responded, “We’ll see.”

The Russell and Clarkson duo has received quite a bit of attention as of late, even Russell jokingly described their relationship as “Thing One” and “Thing Two,” a reference to Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat. On a serious note, both agree that the differences in their game allow them to complement each other on the court.

“His mentality is more score, score and he has the gift to pass as well,” Russell said of Clarkson. “Mine is just more to pass, and I have the gift to score… We complement each other.”

Kobe Bryant Beats Alex Morgan Playing as Alex Morgan & the USWNT in 'FIFA 16'
by Katie Richcreek - bleacherreport.com

Kobe Bryant beat Alex Morgan in FIFA 16 playing as Alex Morgan and the United States women's national soccer team. Yes, you followed that correctly.

And that next-level inception wasn't even the best part.

Morgan jokingly asked where the Los Angeles Lakers veteran guard learned how to pass, to which he rhetorically answered, "Who said I ever learned?" before calling it a necessary evil, likening it to eating broccoli.

Julius Randle is quick out of the gate
by Mike Bresnahan - latimes.com

The comparisons just won't leave Julius Randle alone.

Some say he's a trimmer Zach Randolph, others a stronger Lamar Odom, and there was another association Friday from James Worthy.

"The next time you watch Julius Randle start the break, you'll see some old Charles Barkley stuff. Nobody wants to get in their way," said Worthy, recently hired as a Lakers' coaching consultant.

The fascination with the second-year player is growing in the Lakers' organization. In four days of training camp, he's looked much better than the player who rushed everything in four NBA summer-league games in July, where his accuracy cratered at 39.5%.

Randle has worked on his outside touch and become more confident when he gets an open look. He's also rediscovered a quick first step from the post.

"He's just so much more explosive now," Lakers Coach Byron Scott said. "I think he can be a star. His first step is about as quick as any power forward in this league right now. It's just about developing the rest of his game."

This is something Worthy would know.

"My first step was a good spin move but his is from the triple-threat position. He does a good jab step," he said. "He almost always gets the edge on his first step and that's all you want to do."

Will Julius Randle Or D’Angelo Russell Have Better ‘Rookie’ Year?
by Corey Hansford - lakersnation.com

Coming into the 2015-16 NBA season, the Los Angeles Lakers have a very promising young core of players and if the team plans on making some noise in the Western Conference, it will be because of the play of Jordan Clarkson, Julius Randle, and D’Angelo Russell.

Clarkson is more of a proven commodity than the other two at this stage. He was easily the Lakers best player down the stretch of last season and was named to the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team as a result. He has been in pressure situations in the NBA.

Russell, obviously, is a rookie, and Randle, after breaking his fibula in the season opener last year, might as well be a rookie also. How either of these players will look in major NBA minutes is a complete unknown at this time.

Both players have outstanding potential to turn into perennial All-Stars someday. Randle is a bruising power forward with surprising quickness and ball handling ability for his size. Russell is a smooth point guard with excellent poise, vision, and a great jumper as well. Both will have an excellent opportunity to shine this season, but which one will make a bigger impact this season?

We asked our panel of experts which player they believe will have a better ‘rookie’ season: D’Angelo Russell or Julius Randle? This is what they had to say:

Kobe ‘definitely playing’ in Lakers preseason opener
by Mark Medina - dailynews.com

With three words, Kobe Bryant cleared up any confusion on whether the Lakers’ star would appear in the preseason opener Sunday against the Utah Jazz here at Stan Sheriff Center.

“I’m definitely playing,” Bryant said after practicing in Saturday’s morning session that included a full-court scrimmage.

Bryant made that declaration for two reasons.

He reported no issues with his health after rehabbing his surgically repaired right shoulder for the past nine months.

“I feel great,” Bryant said. “I’m in great shape and I feel strong.”

Bryant also expressed awareness of the sell-out crowd for the Lakers’ preseason appearance here since 2007.

“Fans come all the way out here, you can’t sit on the bench,” Bryant said. “That’s not cool.”

Kobe pays it forward with mentorship of D'Angelo Russell, other young Lakers
by Bill Oram - ocregister.com

As a first time All-Star in 1998, Kobe Bryant found himself found by players he called the “golden greats.”

He played against Michael Jordan, shared a locker room with Gary Payton, John Stockton, Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, David Robinson. Hall of Famers, all.

Over the course of the weekend at New York’s Madison Square Garden he sought out each of them.

“I’d go around asking everybody questions,” Bryant said Saturday.

Now in his 20th season, Bryant is the one getting asked questions. And those interrogating him are a new wave of Lakers, the core group of young players the organization hopes can carry the torch whenever Bryant retires.

“These guys,” Bryant said, “they are really, really thirsty for knowledge. When we leave practice and go back to the meal room or we’re just sitting around the table, we’ll talk.”

One of the most interesting themes of this Lakers team, which coming off a 21-win season, is how Bryant will mesh with a roster that, aside from him, is built on youth.

“It’s a generational gap,” Bryant said.

Lakers vs. Jazz preview: Preseason is finally here
by Drew Garrison - silverscreenandroll.com

The Los Angeles Lakers have some company in Hawaii as the Utah Jazz prepare for a two-game preseason series against the purple and gold. D'Angelo Russell hits the floor with a full NBA team for the first time in his career, Julius Randle takes the next step in recovering from his broken leg and Kobe Bryant plays his first game since Jan 21. The stories surrounding the Lakers heading into a new season are fascinating, and getting a first look at how that will play out on the court has built up anticipation for their first exhibition game.

Gentlefolks, start your engines.

Lakers Vs. Jazz Preview: L.A. Begins 2015-16 Preseason In Hawaii
by Jabari A. Davis - lakersnation.com

The 2015-16 Los Angeles Lakers return to action with a roster that has been completely revamped, a clear acceptance of their current youth movement, and the type of veteran talent that could blend well enough rekindle some of the fire beneath the league’s most passionate fan base.

Fans are eager to see just what second overall pick D’Angelo Russell is made of now that he, a returning Julius Randle and second-year standout Jordan Clarkson have each had several months between Summer League and training camp to develop chemistry while continuing to develop as players, individually.
