Reports: Lakers reach deal with rookie center Robert Upshaw to come to training camp (at least)
Kurt Helin Jul 11, 2015, 9:30 AM EDT

In his Summer League debut, Robert Upshaw went out and battled, he stood toe-to-toe with No. 1 pick Karl-Anthony Towns. While Towns had an impressive first Summer League game, the shot-blocking Upshaw got him once and finished the night with three blocks, two points, and six rebounds, playing 12 minutes.

That and what the Lakers saw in practices for Summer League is enough — they will bring Upshaw into training camp and he will get a shot to make the roster.

Chris Haynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer (and a Fresno guy, where Upshaw is from), broke the news. This will be a two-year deal with a partial guarantee the first year and no guarantee the second year, reports Baxter Holmes of ESPN, which means this is a training camp invite where the 7’2″ will get a chance to prove he should make the roster.

The Lakers will start Roy Hibbert at center and bring Robert Sacre in behind him, plus they are pretty stacked at the four spot with Julius Randle, Brandon Bass, Tarik Black and Larry Nance. The Lakers don’t need to sign another big for depth, so Upshaw is going to need to prove to the team he is worth keeping around to develop.

Timberwolves vs. Lakers: Score, Reaction from Russell and Towns' Debut
By Steven Cook , Featured Columnist Jul 10, 2015

The Minnesota Timberwolves topped the Los Angeles Lakers 81-68 Friday night in the teams' opener of the 2015 NBA Las Vegas Summer League, but the final score served as a footnote to the professional debuts of top picks Karl-Anthony Towns and D'Angelo Russell.

With all eyes on him as the draft's No. 1 overall pick, Towns' ability to fit seamlessly into the NBA game stole the show in a showdown flush with young talent. He scored 12 points and added three rebounds, but his impact on and off the ball went well beyond the stat sheet.

Russell dazzled as well, putting up eight points and six assists while looking comfortable on and off the ball. The No. 2 overall pick showed instant chemistry with fellow guard Jordan Clarkson, who scored a team-high 23 points to lead the Lakers.

The Lakers unwrapped some of their new toys with varying degrees of success Friday.

Julius Randle was not sharp, Jordan Clarkson continued to pick up where he left off toward the end of last season and D'Angelo Russell had moments good and bad.

Clarkson was easily the Lakers' best player as they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in their summer league opener, 81-68, at Thomas & Mack Center.

Clarkson had 23 points and entertained the vocal pro-Lakers crowd with a series of successful drives and fastbreak dunks.

He had a much larger impact than Randle, who hadn't played a game of any consequence since sustaining a broken leg last October in the Lakers' season opener

Lakers Nation Roundtable: Who To Watch On Lakers Summer League Team
Posted by: Corey Hansford Posted date: July 11, 2015 In: News |

The Los Angeles Lakers Summer League team is ready to go in Las Vegas and this year, more than any other, there will be a ton of eyes on them. That is because this year’s squad is pretty loaded with numerous players worth keeping an eye on.

First and foremost is the No. 2 pick in D’Angelo Russell. Last year’s lottery pick Julius Randle will be making his return for the first time since breaking his leg in last year’s season opener. First Team All-Rookie selection Jordan Clarkson will also be playing as he looks to build on his outstanding rookie season. And those are just the big names.

http://www.lakersnation.com/lakers-nation-roundtable-who-to-watch-on-lakers-summer-league-team/2015/07/11/

Tarik Black and Jabari Brown will both be on the team and both are on non-guaranteed contracts for the upcoming season. Dwight Buycks also would have been brought on for the rest of the year had he not been injured. Add in the other two rookies Anthony Brown and Larry Nance Jr. as well as undrafted big man Robert Upshaw who led college basketball in blocks and there are plenty of storylines to follow.

D'ANGELO RUSSELL SO-SO IN SUMMER LEAGUE DEBUT
July 11, 2015by toughie McTuff

Jordan Clarkson and the other Laker summer-leaguers lost to Minnesota during action at the Las Vegas Summer League.
By Rich Winter

The Los Angeles Lakers summer-league pups came up short vs. the Karl-Anthony Towns led Minnesota Timberwolves by a score of 81-68 yesterday at the Summer League in Las Vegas.

For Laker fans the much anticipated debut of No. 2, draft-pick, D'Angelo Russell went a little something like this: 8 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds on 3-8 shooting in 27 minutes of playing.

While Russell's performance was ok, you can see, even from these stats that Russell is going to have his imprint all over games. The scoring will come as confidence rises, but one thing is for certain, Russell has the ability to distribute the basketball, and he's big enough to mix it up and get inside for rebounds.

Top NBA draft picks debut in Wolves’ win

LAS VEGAS — Karl-Anthony Towns, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, scored 12 points in his professional debut Friday night to help the Minnesota Timberwolves to an 81-68 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers and No. 2 pick D’Angelo Russell in the NBA Summer League.

Russell finished with eight points.

Towns said he was nervous when he came out of the locker room at UNLV’s Thomas and Mack Center, and made his way down the venue’s famous tunnel, decorated with murals of past Runnin’ Rebel greats.

“He really settled down into a good comfort zone, the guys calmed him down and made him feel comfortable with everything and really that’s him being a savvy kid,” Timberwolves coach Ryan Saunders said.

The highly anticipated matchup created quite the buzz at the arena, where the lower bowl was filled to capacity with mostly purple-and-gold clad Lakers fans who began arriving at the arena roughly four hours before tip-off.

By game time, several sections in the upper bowl were opened to eliminate fans sitting in the stairwells.

Los Angeles Lakers: Positive Signs After First Summer League Game
by Shane Young 12h ago
TWEET SHARE 0 COMMENTS
The 2015 Las Vegas Summer League kicked off on Friday evening, with the Los Angeles Lakers battling the Minnesota Timberwolves in a jam-packed arena. It may have been the largest crowd for a July NBA event, and the reason couldn’t have been more obvious: The No. 1 overall draft pick, Karl Towns, was placed against the No. 2 pick in D’Angelo Russell.

In what many people envisioned a matchup between the top two big-men of the draft (Towns and Jahlil Okafor), the Lakers shook things up when they selected the most talented ball-handler and passer in the draft instead.

Although the Lakers fell 81-68, it set the bar pretty high for the Vegas Summer League in terms of competitiveness and excitement. Highlight reels were made, aggressive defense was played by both frontcourts, and the crowd got a terrific mixture of rookie and sophomore talent.

LAS VEGAS — Welcome to life in the spotlight, D'Angelo Russell.

Literally.

So here's the scene: A group of reporters were gathered in a semicircle along one side of a cramped hallway after the Los Angeles Lakers played the Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer league opener for both teams on Friday night. Russell left the locker room and weaved his way through the maze of bodies and took his spot along the wall. He then made a rookie mistake and looked directly into a superbright light attached to one of the television cameras.

"Can't see," he said, wincing.

Lesson learned, and that's what summer league is about for the No. 2 pick in this year's NBA draft.

The Lakers' point guard of the present and the future made his pro debut Friday night, and did a little of everything. He had eight points, seven fouls (you can go all the way to 10 in Las Vegas before fouling out), six assists, five rebounds, five turnovers and three steals.

Lakers’ Byron Scott evaluates options between Young, Williams, Randle, Bass

By Mark Medina, LA Daily News
POSTED: 07/11/15, 10:42 AM PDT | UPDATED: 24 MINS AGO
LAS VEGAS >> For once, Lakers coach Byron Scott watched his team attentively without determining rotations.

That job belonged to Lakers assistant Mark Madsen, who served as the summer league team’s head coach beginning with a 81-68 loss against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday at the Thomas & Mack Center. But even if the Lakers are barely a week from assembling their roster for the 2015-16 season, Scott already offered a sneak preview on roles.

Obviously Kobe Bryant will start. But who will start at power forward, Brandon Bass or Julius Randle? Can Lou Williams and Nick Young coexist as bench scorers?

“What I like about the roster is there is competition at every position,” Scott said. “Guys have to come every day and work and earn those minutes.”

Clarkson, Defense Key Win Over Sixers

by Joey Ramirez
Lakers.com Contributor
Posted: Jul 11, 2015

For the second straight game, Jordan Clarkson showed the Las Vegas Summer League why he was named to the All-Rookie First Team last season. Clarkson, who dropped 23 points against Minnesota on Friday, again led the Lakers in scoring with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting.

“This is what we do: We play basketball,” Clarkson said. “I love to hoop, so coming out here and being able to play in front of our fans — it always feels like a home game out here; as well as working on my game and continuing to improve. I’m just trying to keep continuing to progress.”

The Lakers — who surrendered 81 points on 44.4 percent shooting to the Timberwolves —made defense the calling card, as Philadelphia hit only 28.6 percent (20-of-70) throughout the night. The purple and gold stymied the Sixers from the outset by holding them to just 3-of-18 shooting (16.7 percent) in the first quarter.

According to Summer League head coach Mark Madsen, this tenacity can be traced back to a pregame visit from L.A.’s regular-season coach.
