Lakers' struggles could lead to strong prospect in NBA draft

At 16-26, the Lakers are unlikely to make the playoffs.

On May 20, the NBA will hold its annual draft lottery. The last time the Lakers fell to the lottery, they drafted Andrew Bynum in 2005 with the 10th overall pick.

Currently, the Lakers have the ninth-worst record in the league, but they're not too far ahead of the Sacramento Kings (15-25), Cleveland Cavaliers (15-26), New York Knicks (15-26), Boston Celtics (14-29) and Utah Jazz (14-29).

It would take serious losing for the Lakers to catch the Philadelphia 76ers (13-28), Orlando Magic (11-31) and Milwaukee Bucks (7-33). The Bucks may not win nine more games all season.

The silver lining in the prospect of a lost season is that it will likely help the Lakers land one of the top prospects in the draft.

Kansas has two players of note, center Joel Embiid and small forward Andrew Wiggins.

Three power forwards could go in the top 10 -- Julius Randle (Kentucky), Jabari Parker (Duke) and Aaron Gordon (Arizona).

Oklahoma State point guard Marcus Smart and Australian combo guard Dante Exum should also be high picks.

Other early lottery candidates include centers Willie Cauley-Stein (Kentucky) and Noah Vonleh (Indiana). Forward options could include James Young (Kentucky), Doug McDermott (Creighton), Dario Saric (Croatia) and Rodney Hood (Duke). Guard Gary Harris (Michigan State) and even local UCLA product Zach LaVine could also go lottery.

Fans should find silver lining in wasted season

The 2013-2014 Los Angeles Lakers’ regular season hasn’t been the most satisfying of journeys for the team or its fan base. The season is halfway done and the fans’ reaction to a win or a loss has turned into nothing more than a collective shoulder shrug.

Lakers guard Nick Young, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley as a Lakers fan, understands the figurative pain the fan base has come to endure this season. After the team’s 123-87 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Jan. 10, Young pointed out how frustrating losing had become.

“It’s hard to be a Lakers fan, especially to see a game like the last one we played. It’s tough,” Young said last week to the L.A. Times.

AccuScore, which produces sports forecasting, projected a 36-46 record for the Lakers. At the time, 36 wins seemed a bit low for a team that was expecting to get a healthy Kobe Bryant in the lineup by the end of December.

Kobe Bryant won't play for Team USA during 2016 Olympics

January 22, 2014

Before the Los Angeles Lakers faced off against the Chicago Bulls on Monday, Kobe Bryant answered questions about the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil concerning whether or not he'd be playing for Team USA. Bryant said the following about what he intends to do during the 2016 Olympic Games according to Lakers Nation reporter Serena Winters on Jan. 20:

“I’ll go and spectate,” Bryant clarified after saying he has no plans on playing in the 2016 Olympics. “I think I’d rather watch Pau…win another silver.”
After Team USA got the best of Pau Gasol's Spanish squad in the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England, Bryant indicated that it was likely the last time he'd be playing for Team USA. Bryant won two gold medals while playing alongside LeBron James and company adding to the five NBA titles he's won with the Lakers.

Although Bryant doesn't intend on playing for Team USA for a third time, Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau will attempt to convince him otherwise. Thibodeau is an assistant coach under Mike Krzyzewski for Team USA and will pitch Bryant when the time comes.

Without Kobe Bryant to Provide His Usual Fireworks for the Staples Center Crowd This Season, Los Angeles Native Nick Young Has Played the Role Seamlessly for the Rebuilding Lakers

Impossible fade-aways, twirling layups, fancy footwork, an 81-point game. Kobe Bryant has been an entertainer in every sense of the word, the perfect player to represent the entertainment capital of the world.

But when Bryant went down with his Achilles injury last year, the City of Angels collectively realized that the Lakers might not be as fun to watch until their hero recovered. Nobody could match Bryant's otherworldly skill set, but perhaps there was a player out there who could replace his entertainment value.

Nick Young was a sophomore guard down the road at the University of Southern California when Bryant was at the peak of his powers in 2006. From Young's home arena at USC's Galen Center, all it took was northbound glance up Figueroa Street and there was the blue hue of the Staples Center lights.

A Los Angeles native who played high school ball less than 30 miles from USC and Staples Center, Young had grown up on the Shaq-and-Kobe Lakers. He watched that dynamic duo complete a thrilling three-peat in the early 2000s, young Bryant developing a swagger and transforming into a superstar while Shaq dominated on the court and joked around off of it. The Lakers were pure entertainment.

No timeline for Bryant return with Lakers
By JAY COHEN AP Sports Writer
POSTED: 01/22/2014 06:11:20 AM PST | UPDATED: ABOUT 4 HOURS AGO

CHICAGO—Kobe Bryant is riding a bike. That's about all he can do right now, so he's trying not to think about when he might be able to play again for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Bryant broke a bone in his left knee Dec. 17 at Memphis while playing his fourth game in five nights, likely sidelining the superstar guard for six weeks. The injury against the Grizzlies occurred in his sixth game back after he missed the start of the season while recovering from a torn left Achilles tendon.

The pair of injuries for the 35-year-old Bryant raised questions about whether he would ever return to his previous form. But he said Monday night he had no doubt he would play at a similarly high level again.

"There was before I came back the first time because I didn't know how my Achilles was going to respond to playing and changing directions," Bryant said before the Lakers' 102-100 overtime loss at Chicago. "The game in Memphis I had a pretty good feel for it, getting back to being able to do what I normally could do. I feel confident about it. I did play that second half on a fractured leg and played pretty well. I feel pretty good about my chances."

But the rehab from the knee injury has been slow going so far. The 15-time All-Star said he is limited to mostly bike work right now and any talk of a return is up in the air until he returns to the court.

"Try not to think about it too much," he said. "Just go day to day.

5 Biggest Issues Los Angeles Lakers Must Address at the Trade Deadline
BY BRYANT KNOX

Should the Los Angeles Lakers trade Pau Gasol at the deadline?
Andrew Richardson-USA TODAY Spor
The 2013-14 NBA season has been a forgettable one for the Los Angeles Lakers, but the trade deadline offers a chance to evaluate a few key concerns for the second-half stretch.

Through 42 games, the Lakers are 13th out West. They have a 16-26 record, sandwiching them between the rebuilding New Orleans Pelicans and the always-dysfunctional Sacramento Kings.

If you look closely, there's talent to be found on this roster—a concept that is often overlooked by those league-wide. The problem is, injuries have massacred any chance this team once had, and even some who are healthy are struggling with Mike D'Antoni at the helm.

The interesting part about the Lakers is that, depending on how you view it, they could be buyers or sellers at the deadline. There are a number of narratives that justify each approach, and it all depends on what direction general manager Mitch Kupchak wants to take the organization.

One way or another, moves should be made. The question is whether those moves are aimed toward success now or into the future.

We'll find out which one it is soon enough, as the 2014 deadline is Feb. 20—less than one month away.

Kobe will be re-evaluated at the end of the road trip when the team returns to LA on either Monday or Tuesday, per the Lakers.

John Ireland posed a legitimate question, in this deep draft - are there any transcendent draft choice(s) like Durant, Lebron, Kobe, KG, et al?

There are talented players, but this Laker roster is filled with high draft choices.

Marshall - keeper
Young - keeper
Johnson - keeper

I guess he's writing for non-LGers. Still would have been nice if the article had some original analysis about said prospects.

My gosh people, it's just the title! Read the article, it's worth it. Eric Pincus is a great writer and member here. I am embarrased for this to happen.

That's the last title Lakers in the News will have.
