It seems like the season just ended yesterday, and yet this afternoon, the Lakers 22 man summer squad (the number will be considerably lower soon) will be scrimmaging against the Clippers squad. Here's a good preview of what the summer holds for the players, specifically Coby Karl and new draft pick Joe Crawford.

I know it's just the summer and 95% of these players have no chance of making the final roster, but you have to be interested and even inspired by these guys. This is their dream come to fruition and now they have a small number of games and practices to prove that they are good enough to play in the NBA. I can't imagine the pressure that must be on them, but here's hoping they are able to make it happen.

Anyone know if the Lakers have a tall Chinese guy on their summer squad? I had lunch yesterday down the street from their facility and there were 2 chinese guys (1 short guy presumably a translator) and a really tall (about 7-foot) guy dressed in basketball gear. This guy was HUGE and i was standing right behind him in line at El Pollo Loco and i had to step out and look around the guy to see the register and menu up above.

It was probably Yi Li, who's a 7-footer on the summer team

Will Karl get bonus points because he knows the triangle? Lakers have enough stand still shooters on the roster, time to fill another need IMO. Find a big or combo guard to develop.

Karl should develop into more than a standstill shooter, IMO. He has good handles, ridiculously long arms, and is a far quicker/ better athlete than his appearance would indicate. He does need a strong dose of the weight room, but i can se him as a combo guard.

karl isn't quick, nor is he a better athlete than his appearance. sure he can dunk but thats because of his reach and nothing more. he can put the ball in the hole. he can shoot. but he can't defend at this level. for 2 reasons. 1. WAYYY to slow. 2. he doesn't have the heart to play defense. sasha was to slow and anticipated the incorrect direction most times in the past. but he has always had the heart and desire to play lockdown defense. once he started to learn guys tendencies. he became a solid defender.

^I don't know where you see that Karl doesn't have heart.... that guy knows more than anyone we're all living on borrowed time and he seems like he wants to make the most of it. He's also not slow by any means, but, even so, his length makes up for a lot of it. The guy does have some nice hops too.

He's more of an athlete than Sasha... not more skilled yet, but more of an athlete.

first off, you dont have to be diagnosed with a disease or illness to understand you're living on borrowed time. let someone younger then you that you know pass away. then you'll know. but thats neither here nor there. i didn't say he didn't have HEART in general. i said he did not show me in college nor in the pros that he had the heart like sasha. to play hard nose defense. sasha always TRIED to do this. now he knows how. there's a difference. since karl isn't crazy gifted with athleticism. he better have sasha heart to play de. or else he will never be able to keep up on defense.

I think you have no evidence for your take on Karl's heart, and you are certainly wrong about his athletecism. Other than that, I agree

Lets be honest. If its about talent . Karl has much more talent than Sasha. Anyone whos seen this kid play even for a short time can tell .

I don't know abut more talent, but he's a better athlete. It remains to be seen whether his shooting is as good as Sasha's at this level.

Didn't Phil go on record and say Karl was the best pure shooter on the team?

Haven't seen that one. I do know that Sasha finally got that lightning quick release to work in games. Have not seen Karl get there yet.

I'm not sure where I heard it. I'm thinking it was John Ireland on a Laker pregame on KCAL who mentioned it while talking about Karl. I could be mistaken, of course.
Yes phil jackson did say that coby karl was the best shooter on the team, which i kinda agree. better than sasha is as well, hes really good imo

Rookie Coby Karl and 2008 draft pick Joe Crawford are playing in the Summer League, hoping to make the team for next season. Pictures and video of Crawford show a scrimmage game against the LA Clippers.

Both are going to have to play well to be invited to training camp in October for the season. The Summer League won't create any competition between the two, but training camp may have them fighting for a single roster spot. With Crawford being a later draft pick, he is going to have to earn his way into training camp.

My money's on Coby. The dude is underrated due to skin pigmentation and generally goofy appearance, but I think he can become a respectable player given the chance. Solid 3-point shot and he certainly showed some athleticism last season.

wait a second I'm pretty sure both can make the roster
we currently have 16 total including DJ, Coby, Ira, and Crawford
if Ira is not resigned as expected thats 15 right there

and then if we dont match Turiaf thats 14 so we have room to sign someone with the MLE

I think its best to send Crawford to the NBDL anyway so he can gain experience instead of ride the bench.
