Lakers' Gasol, Barcelona's Navarro -- best friends off court -- are foes tonight
By Ramona Shelburne Staff Writer
Article Last Updated: 10/17/2008 11:43:34 PM PDT
Quote: | At the time, it was apressing issue.
Rony Seikaly just wasn't going to be able to cut it anymore. His best years were behind him. But the only post player Regal FC Barcelona had on the roster who might be able to step in was a young, skinny 20-year-old 7-footer named Pau Gasol.
Gasol had shown the mental ability to play at the highest levels of European basketball, but his physical abilities were still a few miles behind.
The plan was to use Gasol as a stop-gap until a replacement for Seikaly could be found. Not a bad plan, considering the team still had superstar guard Juan Carlos Navarro to carry them.
"Then, Pau changed his body and his ability exploded," said Navarro, Gasol's best friend since they were 16. "I was the bigger star when I was young, but of course now, he came to the NBA and he is the man."
In Los Angeles, at least. |

I'm looking forward to going to this one. I was gonna sell my seats but then thought about it because I think this will be the only preseason game I have ever gone to that was even slightly cool. I hate preseason basketball. But this will be different. |

I'm just looking to see a little more continuity out of them as a unit. _________________ "It's just a job. Grass grows, birds fly, waves pound the sand. I beat people up."-The Greatest |

You can blame the Lakers for that one. They're the ones that did the deal with FSW for home games. If you really want to go back far enough, you can blame Buss for creating Prime Ticket, then selling it to Fox, which turned it into FSW and got a small ownership stake in the Lakers in the process. |

If we find a player who can guard him one-on-one, we are in a great position |
