PostPosted: Wed Oct 01, 2008 6:23 pm    Post subject: Best Album Cover Art

I saw a thread in the Off Topic forum asking for best cover art...for the new video basketball games. I was disappointed, as I thought it was for album art, which I think is a good topic.

So who has the best album cover art? I know some Iron Maiden fans love their cover art, but that is not my style. Metallica's Black Album shouldn't count.

Sgt. Pepper? Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here? Spinal Tap's Smell the Glove?

TACH will probably have some input here - he has some great cover art right in his sig

Personally I can't think of any off the top of my head... all the CD's I ever bought I just removed from their case and stuck in my huge CD books. The cases along with cover art were relegated to being stored in boxes in the garage for all eternity.

When I think of cover art, I think back to when I was a kid (the 70s), when 'record jackets' were the norm. Ones that I remember off the top of my head:

Miles Davis - (bleep) Brew
WAR - Deliver The World
Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On
Stevie Wonder - Songs In The Key of Life
Funkadelic/Parliament - One Nation Under A Groove (almost too many to list... same goes for Zeppelin).

RHCP and RATM have some cover art that I think is cool as well... in addition to the ones on the left...

Yeah, I gotta roll with any by P-Funk, War (The World is a Ghetto), and Prince (1999, Around The World In a Day, Sign 'O' The Times).

Hopefully they did not go blind because of that.

Imagine if THAT was the last thing you ever saw?

My favorites tend to come from my youth, because as an early teen and young adult back then, album art was a big part of the experiencing the music because of the LP format size. Not that cover art isn't an artform that continues. It's just in this CD/Digital age, the cover art hasn't been as iconic as the images we're in the 70's and early 80's - at least to me.

I can't start my discussion without a mention of one of the great album cover designers of the early rock years, Roger Dean. I wasn't always a fan of the bands he did work for, but I loved the work.

Among his best art:

Yes - Fragile

Uriah Heep - Magician's Birthday

Greenslade - Bedside Manners are Extra

Symphonic Pink Floyd

But among my favorites -

Some the of Classics:

The Who's Next

Jimmy Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's

Led Zeppelin - 1

And of course Zeppelin had a couple of others:

Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy

Led Zeppelin - IV

To me, some of the most iconic of Rock album covers because they helped define a new era:

The Clash - London Calling

The Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen

The Stooges - Raw Power

Some classic Floyd covers:

Pink Floyd - Animals

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

Pink Floyd - The Division Bell

One of my favorite Bob Marley ones:

Bob Marley and The Wailers - Catch a Fire

A couple of favorite Who covers:

The Who Sell Out (front)
The Who Sell Out (back)

A couple of Queen ones:

Queen - A Night at the Opera
and a Day at The Races

More Jimi:

Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis Bold as Love

Sabbath's best:

Black Sabbath - Never Say Die

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

A beautiful piece of art:

Joy Division - Closer

I'm forgetting a bunch. But as I run images through my head, these are ones that stand out.
