Eddie Van Halen <ducks for cover>

Good thing you ducked. I slung poo.

Nirvana? Chuck Berry? Zeppelin? Musical ubersuccess is mistrusted by some music fans no matter what. It's the old, "If everyone likes it, it must be overrated."

I mentioned Link Wray. I'm sure a lot of people like Link Wray. But I don't think he's given enough credit. He invented distortion and the power chord. It's not always "what everyone likes" that's overrated. Jimi Hendrix is worshiped by everyone and in my opinion, i don't think he's overrated at all.

Depends on how you mean "transcend". Led Zeppelin doesn't transcend the 70s judging by the poopscape of today's popular music. Even the alternative stuff from just 15 yrs ago is about as unheard of today as 80s pop (which in itself is damn near high art compared to 2000s pop).

Or do you mean transcend as in "stuff that's still played, listened to and appreciated today"? Zeppelin certainly is, but then again, Roth VH is too, albeit to a lesser extent. Their first album alone has 5 tracks that have been classic rock station staples for years. They're also making a lot of money on tour after years of insulting their fans with feuds that would make Shaq and Kobe blush.

Any of the younger crowd who knows what Roth VH is does so almost assuredly because of EVH. Interestingly, Weezer, who was also listed overrated, is probably the contemporary band most influenced by VH, right down to their logo. Green Day and Pantera were two other divergent acts who listed VH as influences. Dimebag Darryl had one of EVH's guitars buried with him. JC Mellencamp says they're the greatest music act of the 80s. I think VH have always been more respected by other musicians than by critics.

EVH is regarded as a great guitarist but it would be disengenuous to say Jump and Panama are trancsendent, no matter what the definition is.

I meant that in artistic terms, as in having something of lasting artistic value. I consider VH to be very vapid, with some really great guitar riffs, sort of like Yngvie Malmsteen or Joe Satriani, but with the pop celebrity of David Lee Roth thrown in.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the innovative technique of Eddie, but I don't think he really used it to any meaningful end.

Zeppelin was kind of the Jay-Z of their time. Before Zep, there was the Experience and Cream, both wildly popular and genre-defining bands that broke up about the time Zeppelin released their first album. Zeppelin vs. The Who is in effect the Jay-Z/Nas debate, especially since there were rumors that Jimmy Page had wanted to recruit Entwistle and Moon. Zep was frequently accused for biting off lyrics and riffs from blues artists. Zep essentially became a super-brand name only rivaled by the Stones -- singles, shirts, megaevent concerts -- and eventually became the standard bearer of "Hard Rock" to people who don't listen to the stuff. This is similar to Jay-Z's relationship with commercial hip-hop. Both can come to define an era. And so, at some point, people started included Zep in GOAT discussions in the same way that kids often bring up Jay-Z.

I don't think anyone rates Puffy very high on the list of great musicians.
