Free agency begins on Monday 9 am pacific.

Free Agency FAQ

1. How many offers can I make at once?
Four. Once you make an offer you are locked in until that player signs. The highest value free agents will sign first.

2. Are there any salary ceilings on what I can offer?
You can offer up to your cap room.

3. If I offer all my cap room to four guys at once are there any ramifications?
Yes. The agent who signs the deal will be pleased. The other three will be furious and unlikely to deal with you again.

4. How many agents are there in the game?
Four. Agent Smith, Agent Orange, Agent 007 and Agent of Evil. They are assigned to 1-2 players by tier.

5. What information should be in the offer?
Please follow this format
Joe Blow
Baseline: 25
Years: Max
Role & Team: Explanation of how he will be used (position, touches, etc). Talk up how teammates optimize him and the playoff chances of the team.
Guarantee: Yes or no. If this is not included the agent will assume it is not guaranteed.

Do NOT include:
1. Any other fiscal details. The baseline number and the years are the only financial numbers I want to see. Nothing else. No frontloading, no incentives, no signing bonuses, no CBA tricks of any kind. Baseline is the first year salary.

2. Any talk of the city. If cities were a free agent factor everyone prefers Vegas, Rio, etc. and Winona and Bemidji would be SOL.

6. What will the free agent's decision be based upon?
In priority order:
1. Money. Baseline, years and guaranteed offer.
2. Role & Team. Position, touches, teammates and above all title/playoff chances.

If the money is considered to be close then role and team will be a critical factor. Team rep plays a factor (times to pick, missed deadlines/picks), also agent relationship with the team if there were past dealings.

7. How long will it take for an agent and player to decide?
An agent will look at available cap room and determine when he has seen all the likely offers to come in. If a high cap room team does not make an offer the agent may contact the GM about potential interest. Agent makes the call on when all quality offers are in.

Agent then selects three finalists and contacts the GMs, asking a few questions as needed. Three finalists make the final bid, agent gives them a deadline. Final decision is made and a contract is signed. Most of the time it's two days per tier, day 1 for offers, day 2 for finalists, final bids and a decision.

8. If I use my cap room do I then get the MLE and BAE?
No.

9. Who qualifies for MLE?
Players with tier 10 stats (see the rules) and only one of those stats in the season chosen are MLE eligible. But they may also be pursued in free agency. MLE guys aren't signing early unless the agent believes the player has no chance for being signed for more. MLE counts as 6.

10. What about BAE and vet min?
I will post BAE and vet min stat ceilings Sunday.

11. Can I sign a free agent and then trade him?
No.

12. Will free agency reflect the player in real life? His priorities? Will every free agent just sign the biggest contract no matter what?

Free agency will reflect the player priorities. Some have a proven history of show me the money, some have a history of show me the team and the money.

High cap room teams can show more money, but a team-first player may well insist on other signings first that guarantee his chances to contend. Slows things down and forces the GM to take greater risks.

This is a game of legends accustomed to winning, most aren't going to take banks of cash to be the lone star on a team that won't go to the playoffs. They'll want big money AND contention. They'll say sign playoff/title insurance first and then I'll sign for the big offer.

That's not everybody though. You back up the Brinks truck and some players will say cool where do I sign? You have to evaluate the player, and know his history.

13. If I am under the cap by less than 6M do I still get the MLE and BAE?

Yes. Any team with a payroll of 112 or above gets the exceptions.

If you intend to make trades to clear more space you can renouce the MLE and BAE, You can't deal to get further under the cap, then spend in free agency, then get MLE. The exceptions are assigned to qualifying teams before free agency starts.

14. What are the max years and ceilings for free agent contracts?
Open free agent - Baseline: up to cap room, Years: 5
MLE - Baseline 6M, Years 5
BAE - Baseline 2M, Years 2
Vet Min: Baseline 1M, Years 2

The MLE can be split up as often as you like. Can offer one guy 6M, two 3M, whatever you want that adds up to 6. No splits for BAE.

15. What about the season of the player? Can we offer him the big contract in an earlier season at prime rates to get him signed?

The premier free agents will demand that they be paid a premium for seasons in their prime. After signing them you can determine season.

Any free agent with competing suitors will expect prime. Free agents that don't get the love may not have a choice. Any free agent who qualifies for 20M or more on the contract scale will not settle for under 20, if he has no offers at that price he will just sign in Europe. Everyone else is fair game, depends on what interest they draw.

16. What's the stat tier for MLE, BAE and Vet Min?
MLE - Only one stat >= 16 pts, 40% 3, 8 reb, 7.5 ast. 2.5 stl, or 2.5 blk.
BAE - No stat above 12 ppg, 35% 3, 7 reb, 6 ast, 1.5 stl, 2 blk.
Vet Min - No stat above BAE, only one stat >=10 ppg, 32% 3, 6 reb, 5 ast, 1.2 stl, 1.5 blk

Just because a player may qualify in later seasons for MLE/BAE does not mean he will accept it. Players will always hold out for the season where they can get paid the most. Exception signings happen after cap room is gone, just like the NBA, always holding out the hope for mo' money.

If a free agent is a role player who can't realistically expect MLE or partial MLE then and only then will he sign BAE relatively early in free agency. Same thing with vet min, if he has no hope for BAE or greater in any season then he'll sign vet min.

16. What expectations wil the player have for how much he's paid?
Market value. Initial expectations can be determined by looking at player salaries. The salary tiers are 30, 27, 25-21 for the top guys. Look at player salaries by position, figure out where the holes are, bam there's the minimum he'll consider.

17. Will agents tell us what it will take to get into the top 3 for final bids?
They will tell you if you need to up the offer without giving a specific number and what other issues/concerns the player has. Under no circumstances will they tell you the number the other teams are offering. That's not like reality but that mystery is necessary for this game.

I'm getting MLE offers for Hall of Famers, c'mon now. If they are top 50 all-time, on nba.com's history page of greatest players, hall of famers, the MLE is off limits. If they were multiple all-stars the answer is no. One time all-star the answer is still no. You have to avoid the legends and multiple all-stars entirely, avoid the all-stars by going early or late, and stay within the stat guidelines if you expect to land a guy for MLE.

Some players may very well be ignored in free agency, but they will make a mass exodus for Europe.

Speaking of MLE offers....While the big names will decide first for the big money there are many other players who know MLE is probably the most they will see. Those free agents who qualify for MLE and don't expect to get more will decide quickly. Therefore it is in everyone's interest to get offers in now, even if it's MLE or BAE.

Nope. Agents make decisions when they think all quality offers are in, no sooner.

Free agency update:

On Tuesday, Tim Duncan and Moses Malone will sign contracts. That will clarify the bidding for James Worthy and Isiah Thomas, who should also sign Tuesday. Once the big names are gone then the remaining cap room will be spent and it will be down to MLE bidding.

Free agent offers have not been received from nearly one-third of the ATL teams. No need to wait, please make your offers even if all you have is MLE, BAE and Vet Min. Once those priorities are made clear then MLE free agents and below can begin signing deals.

Tuesday will be Back Up The Truck Day, free agents will come spilling out in volume. If you have an offer in then expect to hear an answer by late morning-early afternoon pacific if timely responses are received from GMs on agent requests.

I am sorry for the delay in an announcement on major free agent signings.

An absolutely vital agent request that defines the entire shape of free agency is out to minrobravo, GM of Hiroshima and holder of 48 million in cap room. Until he responds nothing else can happen at the top of the free agent food chain. Every effort has been made to contact him and hopefully Bravo will arrive soon.
