National Gepgraphic April 2005 Orcas Unmasked by Douglas Chadwick Pages 86-105 Great article and pictures about this great preadator that is actually a dolphin.
".....With enormous reserves of speed and strength, one of the biggest brains in existence--four times the weight of a human's--and no natural enemies as adults, they have staked the claim as the supreme predators across 71 percent of the planet. What do they do when they meet a great white shark? Lunch, according to witnesses."
The article goes on to say there has been only one known incident where a killer whale grabbed a surfer, but quickily let them go. They do not attack humans, and in New Zealand, KW's will nudge lobster fisherman to see what they have caught in their traps. Some killer whales even bring their caught sharks or rays over to humans, like a cat showing off a mouse. Page 100-101 shows a picture of a large mako shark being pursued and eventually eaten by a group of killer whales. The only thing safe in the ocean from Orcas is us.
Makes you want to go to Sea World or watch a rerun of Flipper or something....

There is no discussion. Killer whales are the apex predator of the sea. They eat blue whales. Orcas have been known to predate great whites, but not the other way around. It's rare because they don't often cruise the same waters, but a few years ago footage was captured of an orca killing a juvenile great white to share with its calf.

A mako shark is like a bullet. They've been filmed catching fish trailing a boat going full speed. Great whites filmed chasing a trailing camera in the water disappear only to come up from nowhere and hit the camera. When a great white circling low depths hits a human from below, the force they exert from their bite added to the speed at which they hit will break a femur even before the teeth cut the leg off. That noted, orcas are big bad (bleep) that ain't neva scared of no sharks. |

I'm not sure, but let's make a video game out of it.
In a straight up brawl, the Orca is going to take it. White Sharks are not straight up brawlers, though. They prefer a Pearl Harbor style, and a white shark could definately TKO an Orca that way. BTW, have you ever seen video of those White Shark off of some island in South Africa that have developed a breeching behavior, and when they hit their prey, fly completely out of the water. Crazy. I don't think an Orca would recover from one of those hits, but again, if they were circling each other, the Orca would be like Sugar Ray Leonard out there. The white shark is more like Butterbean.
Here's the real question: How about genetically engineering an hybrid white shark/orca? I smell a cheesy screenplay idea coming on... |

Killer Whale. There was footage of a Killer Whale killing a great white awhile ago. It was 5-8 years ago. I have no idea where to find it. I'm sure it is out there somewhere on the net.

Not a good comparison; that was a juvenile white shark vs. a full grown orca. That's like a kid in AAU going up against Kobe...the kid has lots of potential, but he isn't ready for the big time yet... |

| I think everyone should be calling them "orcas" because "Killer Whale" is a misnomer and it sounds like some surfer came up with that name. Sounds weak. "Orca" sounds a lot more gangsta. |

Orca most def.
They are the only ocean dwellers above white sharks on the food chain. They hunt in pods in a coordinated fashion that they train their young in as soon as they're born. Each pod has a slightly different mode of attack and communication. The wolves of the sea and the largest of the dolphin family. BTW, it's true name isn't "Killer Whale"--it's actually "whale killer"--now that's gangsta. I forget where I read that (National Geographic, iirc) or I'd post a link. |

They sure do... I saw it on Animal Planet. It was a group of killer whales attacking a mama blue whale and its baby  They tortured the thing for like 8 hours.

From the NG article, the primary way Orca's kill seals, dolphins, whales is by ramming them full speed. Imagine being hit by a killa whale weighing 10 tons (males) and going 20 knots, which is about 35 MPH I believe. Orcas hunt in packs where Great White's are loners. The funny thing about Orcas is that they are diet specific; some hunt mammals, some hunt fish or sharks. Whereas the typical great white is a garbage can, although they prefer seals. Especially the orcas on the west coast are very specific, they hunt one or the other. It would be cool to see a gang war off the coast of Marin County during seal season; the big 17 foot great whites, and a pod of Orcas, somebody bring the video camera!

I saw footage of a male elephant seal trying to hurl itself on the deck of a moving boat to escape a killer whale pod. Didn't make it. |
