Top Gear is coming to America.... well sort of:

Quote:
The popular BBC car show "Top Gear" is revving up a U.S. edition.

NBC has ordered a pilot for "Gear," which will be announced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit (January 19-27). Casting is under way for hosts. As with the BBC version, it will offer a mix of cars, humor and celebrities.

The pilot will be filmed at a secret location around Los Angeles equipped with a race track and hangar where the show will be filmed in front of a audience.

Quote:
Among "Gear's" popular segments that will be replicated in the U.S. are races where the hosts have to reach a destination using different modes of transportation, road tests, challenges like converting and refurbishing existing cars into anything from a stretch limo to an amphibian and celebrities racing a midsize car. ("American Idol's" Simon Cowell holds the record for fastest lap time with a Chevrolet Lacetti.)

The U.K. show is hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May and also features the Stig, a masked test driver. The U.S. version also will feature a quartet of presenters, including a secret test driver.

The BBC originally mulled doing an American version with the original British hosts, but the idea fell through in the summer, mostly over Clarkson's unwillingness to spend extended periods of time away from his family as well as the show's growing ratings success in Britain.

Sort of, because the American version will have different host...

Either way, I will tune in to see what the American version is all about... I hope NBC doesn't (bleep) this up...

Can you clarify? I mean the GTR had a better Ring time than the Porsche and is half the cost. Prior GTR's ate up the competition respectively. A twin turbo v6 putting out a conservative 480bhp is nothing to joke about considering Nissan has historically underrated prior years GTR numbers...

I really like those Toyota Corollas. How is that baby holdin' up for you?

What kind of gas mileage to you get? Its a simple, no non-sense car. I couldn't find any good deals when I was car shopping so I ended up getting a Mazda6, which I also like. Although the Toyota is probably more reliable and better on the gas....while the Mazda is a little more unique.

Great commuter car. I had a '96 until last year. Bought in early '97, never had a single problem with it and this included many trips from Seattle to LA, lots of trips through snow. Heard the '06 and '07 weren't very good though.

Have an audi a4 quattro now which is a lot more fun to drive and a lot safer in the snow but I do worry about reliability...

I think it's difficult to make a judgment at this point. I can bet that only few of us, if not none, have even been inside the new GT-R, let alone get to drive it. IMO, I'd give it the benefit of the doubt. I think Nissans/Infiniti's are as close as it gets nowadays when it comes to having that "character" among Japanese cars. Plus, Skylines, to say the least, are pretty legendary.

Actually my current job has me driving all different kinds of cars on the road, so I do have a very specific taste. On top of that, what are Skyline's known for? Numbers. 4WD. Traction control systems. Great test numbers. etc. That doesn't mean I'd even enjoy that more over an MR2 Spyder.

All I see is a heavy car with great abilities that flatter a driver's skill level, but not really enhancing it.

I'm a big fan of the Dodge Challenger SRT-8. It's going to be a monster.

We'll see what Chevy can do with the Camaro.

That's nice. What kind of job do you have? I'd love to get paid to drive and try out all kinds of cars.

As for the GT-R, if you've driven it already, that's cool. But I figured it'd be too soon come to a conclusion when the car is not even out yet, at least not in the US. And obviously, MR2 and GT-R are two different animals.
