Just watched Into the Wild again. Not my favorite all time, but Penn and Hirsche seriously got robbed by that little golden statue guy... _________________ “We must always take sides. True, but Hirsche was a revelation, and the movie was nearly perfect in every detail. Such a difficult story to capture without artifice or cliche', yet Penn did it almost effortlessly. I was floored by it the first time, and it gets better each time i see it. _________________ “We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Effing hardcore. You just won the Congressional Medal of...Ugly! (<- nod to Stanley)
I've seen it a couple times in recent years, but the last time I think I had to watch it in parts over the course of 2 days. Easily the most authentic feeling period piece I think. It's a deliberate film, but the story is better than Kubrick was given credit for. Long-winded Victorian literature isn't the easiest of things to condense and put to film. The duel scene is great. _________________ GOAT MAGIC REEL

A few months ago I went to a screening at the Egyptian of Barry Lyndon in 75mm. STUNNING. It may be the most aesthetically beautiful movie ever. Each shot feels like a classical painting. If you ever get the chance to see it on the big screen I urge you to take it. |
