ALL-STAR WEEKEND: Four shot in two incidents

Violence culmination of partying, LV police say

By ANTONIO PLANAS
REVIEW-JOURNAL

NBA revelers were relatively peaceful for the first few days of All-Star festivities until a one-hour stretch early Monday morning when the massive party was winding down and tempers flared at some locations, Las Vegas police said.

Four people were shot, including three who were critically injured, during two incidents that occurred between 4 and 5 a.m. at two locales on or near the Strip, said Jose Montoya, Las Vegas police spokesman.

One man was shot in the hip inside the parking garage of the MGM Grand. He declined to press charges, and police are not following up on the incident, Montoya said.

Instead they are focused on the more serious shooting, which occurred outside the Minxx strip club on Wynn Road near Tropicana Avenue.

Three people were shot after three or four patrons of the club were escorted outside for fighting. One of them opened fire, wounding two employees and a patron near the club's entrance, police said.

Blood spatter could be seen Monday morning on one of the double doors at the club.

One worker was shot in the chest, one was shot in the arm and leg, and a female patron was grazed in the head by another bullet, Montoya said. He said all three victims were hospitalized in critical condition.

Montoya said police had heard speculation that NFL cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones of the Tennessee Titans had been involved in the shooting, but those reports had not been confirmed. Jones has had several run-ins with authorities in West Virginia and Tennessee.

Montoya also said he did not know whether any other celebrities were at the club during the time of the shooting. There were reports that rapper Nelly was among the celebrities who had been in the club just before the shooting.

Jones' agent, Michael Huyghue of Axcess Sports & Entertainment in Jacksonville, Fla., said late Monday afternoon that he knew nothing of the incident and would have been told if his client were the subject of a police investigation.

Because Jones is not a "poster child" for model behavior, he has become "an easy target for people to say he's involved in this kind of thing," Huyghue said.

As part of the effort to identify who fired the bullets at Minxx, police were interviewing about 40 witnesses who had been at the club, Montoya said.

Crime scene tape cordoned off half of Minxx's parking lot Monday morning. Officers with the department's gang unit were seen going in and out of the club, but Montoya said the shooting did not appear to be gang-related.

Although Montoya said no arrests had been made, a woman with orange hair was led out of the club in handcuffs. She was barefoot, and her high-heeled shoes were being carried in a bag by a man who escorted her. The woman was put into a green, unmarked sedan.

Montoya said the woman was detained but not taken to jail.

Workers at the club early Monday refused to comment, and several calls to the club throughout the day were not returned. The club remained closed as of 9 p.m. Monday.

Montoya said a private party out of Houston had rented out the club for the weekend.

Several posted signs outside the club promoted an event called Harlem Knights, and there is a strip club of the same name in Houston. The club's Web site promoted the event at Minxx this past weekend.

In between the Monday morning shootings, police had been called about several fights that broke out at Tryst nightclub inside Wynn Las Vegas, Montoya said.

The early morning violence likely was the culmination of several days of partying, Montoya said. The NBA All-Star Game events had begun in the middle of last week.

"After four or five days when people were out on the town partying, getting little sleep, tempers flare, and people get angry," Montoya said. "That's probably why we saw this at the end of the weekend rather than the beginning."

Las Vegas police arrested 362 people since the start of NBA festivities, and 209 of them were from out of town, Montoya said.

Between 80 and 140 people have been arrested during each of the past three New Year's Eve celebrations, which is generally a 12-hour enforcement operation for police, Montoya said.

Wow.... gotta love Las Vegas PD:

HUH!!! WTF? They don't investigate attempted murders unless the vic wants to press charges?

Who cares about this stuff? The real problem is that Tim Hardaway doesn't like gay people, and Dictator Dave solved that important problem. All these shootings and arrests and stuff don't matter. As long as they like gay people they're cool cats.

Tim Hardaway isn't an NBA player either. The point is if Dictator Dave is worried about the NBA's image, he should deal with the gangsta' mentality taking over the league. What so and so thinks about gays is irrelevant. Gay issues aren't what's trashing the NBA's image.

Wow,.. I did not realize shootings, drug use and on court/field fighting was isolated to just the NBA. I mean I never heard the MLB, NHL, or the NFL labeld as having a 'gangsta' mentality. I guess 18 arrest between the Chargers and Bengals must of been a dream....

I was listening to this on the ticket.

Allegedly:

Pac man slammed a dancer's head on the stage. Security got into it with him. Jones threatens to "kill" security. Gunman is seated next to Jones. They both leave together. Gunman shoots the entrance hitting two guards. One guard is now paralyzed. ...

damn shame..

I agree with you but the fact of the matter is all those leagues(except maybe Hockey) put out a good product to the point you don't even notice those things as part of the forefront.

I mean the NBA had a brawl with players and fans. They also had the cover story about black NBA players spreading their seed all over the country. The NBA is a predominantly black league with black players as the stars(Nash and Dirk notwithstanding)

While the NFL also has a variety of stars but its mainly known as the league with the faces of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady they're the "ideal": a white professional athlete that stays out of trouble and is relatively clean(Brady's baby daddy status notwithstanding of course).

Didn't the Dodgers have a fight with fans? I've seen hockey players go into the stands? Hell, didn't a hockey player plead guilty in a murder for hire case,.. and let's not forget Rae Carruth or the court/judge/jail that is part of the stadium in Philly... Gambling, coach of a hockey team, and the great one's wife.... but the NBA is 'gangsta'?

Titans: Club owner says Pacman Jones knew shooter

The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS - The co-owner of the strip club where three people were shot over the NBA All-Star weekend says pro football player Adam "Pacman" Jones came and left with the shooter, an account that differs from that of Jones' lawyer.

"He denied any knowledge of the shooter, but he was sitting right next to him," club co-owner Robert Susnar told the Las Vegas Review-Journal for Wednesday's edition. "Those guys came in together and left together."

Jones' lawyer, Worrick Robinson, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Jones did not know anyone involved in the shooting and was interviewed by local authorities as a witness, not as a suspect. Police have not said Jones is a person of interest in the case.

Susnar said his recollection of the events was based upon his interviews with employees and club surveillance video.

He said the trouble started after 4 a.m., when Jones and his entourage of a half-dozen people returned to the club for the second time that evening.

Jones tossed hundreds of $1 bills on the stripper stage, Susnar said, adding that when a dancer started grabbing the money without Jones' permission, he got angry, grabbed her hair and slammed her head against the stage.

Security guard Aaron Cudworth, a mixed-martial artist with professional fighting experience, intervened and scuffled with Jones and members of his entourage, he said.

Jones then threatened to kill the guard, Susnar said.

Order was eventually restored and everyone moved outside before the gunman opened fire toward the front door of the club, hitting Cudworth, security guard Tom Urbanski and a female customer, he said.

"He goes out, retrieves a gun, then shoots two security guards, pretty much making good on the threat made by Pacman Jones," Susnar said.

Robinson told the paper that the entertainers began throwing cash into the air, sparking a fight among women on and off the stage as they scrambled for the money. He said Jones was attacked when he tried to get his own money back. "Mr. Jones didn't assault anybody," Robinson said.

Robinson and Susnar did not immediately respond to messages left by The Associated Press Wednesday.

Cudworth, who was shot in the chest and arm, was released from University Medical Center on Tuesday. Urbanski, 43, remained at the hospital in critical condition. He was expected to live, but a bullet severed his spine and paralyzed him below the waist, his father told the paper.

"He's going to be paralyzed for life, and what did he do?" Don Urbanski said. "I just want somebody to pay for it."

Jones has faced criminal charges three times since the Tennessee Titans made the cornerback the sixth overall pick in the 2005 draft - all involving incidents at nightclubs in Tennessee.

The cornerback promised he had seen the inside of a courtroom for the last time Feb. 1, when a judge dismissed an assault charge filed by a woman who claimed Jones spit on her during an October nightclub altercation.

Charges in a confrontation with a club manager during a private party in July 2005 also have been dismissed.

Jones was ordered to stay out of trouble until July 5 if he wants his criminal record cleared of public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges for an August arrest in the Nashville suburb of Murfreesboro.

Robinson said he didn't think the Las Vegas incident violated the judge's order.

F'd up is an understatement,... I just heard the interview on the Dan Patrick Show.... If any of that is remotely true, he should not be walking the streets...

For all the men here and maybe even some of the women. We all know that when we throw money on a stripper stage it then belongs to the stripper. Unless he had an Al Bundy string I don't understand why him and his crew believed he would get the money back. Are stripper clubs different across the countrty?

This dude should be done in the NFL. Classic case of some class-less POS that came up on some money and now thinks he's above the law. It's guys like this that give hard-working, charitable athletes a bad name.

Recordings Link Pacman To Drug Dealer

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- In April, Metro police seized nearly 2,000 pounds of marijuana and cocaine, busting one of the largest local drug rings in recent history.

Although investigative reports showed Tennessee Titans cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was a suspect, he remains untouched by the law.

Documents and wiretapped phone conversations show he may have been very close to the investigation.

The conversations are between Jones and Darryl Moore, who was the target of the investigation. Police said that Moore was a convicted felon and an alleged major drug kingpin.

The phone calls revealed the friends partied together several nights. Moore slept at Jones' home and evidence showed he may have made drug deals from there.

In one conversation, Moore talked about a "cutie pie", which is slang for 9 ounces of cocaine.

Moore: "I'm at Pacman's house. I'm just laying around..."
Caller: "I'm just wondering if I could get a cutie pie from you"
Moore: "Yeah I got it yeah I can do that...give me about an hour"

The conversations revealed Moore's concern that Jones' smoking pot too much and put his career in jeopardy. They also raised questions if Moore may have even been a dealer for Jones.

In another call, "dro" is mentioned. "Dro" is slang for marijuana.

Pacman: "Bring that dro over here when you come too buddy."
Moore: "Do what?"
Pacman: "Bring some of that Dro when you come over here."
Moore: "I ain't got none."

The investigative report showed on April 1, officers were focusing on Darryl Moore, looking for a "shipment of cocaine" that was "ready to be delivered."

An officer was assigned to wait outside the home of "Titans player Pacman Jones."

The investigation unfolded after that:

9:06 -- Police reports showed officers discovered Moore's car at Jones' house.
9:46 -- Moore exits the house with a briefcase. Minutes later, Moore and Jones were in the garage talking to each other.
9:52 -- Moore left Jones' home with a bag and then about an hour and a half later, officers began the takedown, arrested Moore and seized thousands of pounds of marijuana.

An hour later, Jones kept trying to reach his friend unaware of what happened. A listener might wonder why Jones wasn't charged. An attorney at the district attorney's office said they could never prove Jones was a distributor, although the conversations showed he was likely a user and a customer.

However, they said the close connections were still not enough to get a search warrant on Jones' home or an arrest warrant, so Jones faced no charges.

All this talk of violence in Vegas was kinda crazy. Almost seemed like it was Baghdad in surprise

But then again, given the Sin-City persona..... naaaaaaaah it isnt that surprising lol.
