So what the hell happens when a stingray nails you in the chest?

Anyone know?

I hand fed a bunch of those in Cayman Island on a shallow dive but I think they were basically tame because of all the human feeding.

A stingray barb is basically a 6 inch serrated needle. Poor Steve Irwin didn't have a chance...

Wikipedia:

"Their stinger is a razor-sharp, barbed or serrated cartilaginous spine which grows from the ray's whip-like tail (like a fingernail). It is coated with a toxic venom. This gives them their common name of stingrays, but that name can also be used to refer to any poisonous ray."

man, what a terrible way to go - stingray poison hurts like crazy. I got stung in my ankle after surfing in SD, luckily the barb didn't break off. Hot water helps, but man, that was a new kind of pain - like fire in your veins. The poison still would flare up to like 2 weeks later.

but geebus, through the heart?!?

... and considering it's the croc hunter, and he was filming a documentary, i'd bet there's going to be some very distrubing video online sooner or later.

This is really messed up. He seemed like a cool guy. Condolences to his family.

I'm shocked. I always believed television made his stunts appear to be more dangerous than they really were. I mean they must work in a control environment, at least I thought. Never believed his life was in danger in any of his shows. Now I know the man was for reals. RIP.

I am very sad, and my prayers go out to his family. His wife is from Eugene Oregon, I wonder if she will stay in Australia or come back to the States?
