Game Recap - Phoenix Suns vs. Detroit Pistons

Pistons rally to beat Suns

Dennis Rogers
drogers (@) vegassummerleague.com

July 10, 2006

After trailing for the majority of the game, the Detroit Pistons fought off a 16-point first half deficit to rally for a 90-87 victory over the Phoenix Suns in the Toshiba Vegas Summer League Monday evening. The Pistons outscored the Suns 57-38 over the third and fourth quarters to eventually take the game.

Detroit turned the game around in the second half, as the Pistons put down 65.4% (17-26 FG) of their shots for 29 points in the third and 28 in the fourth. The defense needs to be lauded, as well, as it only allowed nine field goals for 36.0% to be made by Phoenix's shooters.

The Pistons pulled to even at 6:47 left to play at 72-72, but let the Suns have their opportunities down the stretch to take the game.

Trailing 87-83 with 1:06 remaining in the game, Detroit reeled off seven unanswered points to take the game.

Detroit's Cheikh Samb scored eight points in the game, but his final two were the most important. With 15-seconds left to play, Samb hit a fall-away jumper from the right side to put his team up for good.

Alex Acker led all scorers with a 29-point (9-24 FG, 11-14 F) outing. Acker was one of three Pistons to collect double-figure point totals. Mateen Cleeves had 14, while Nik Caner-Medley had 10.

Phoenix had two near double-doubles with Maciej Lampe had 19 points (8-8 FG) and eight rebounds, while Amare Stoudemire chipped in 17 points (3-9 FG, 11-13 FT) and nine boards. Ruben Douglas kept the Suns in the game down the stretch as he scored 18, as well.

For the game, Detroit made 51.0% (26-51 FG) of its shots, while Phoenix hit 44.4% (24-54 FG).

The Pistons return to action on Tuesday at 6 p.m., as they face the New York Knicks. Phoenix opens Wednesday's play with a game against the Portland Trail Blazers at noon

Kevin Martin with the triple double? 24 points, 10 rebounds, 11 turnovers?

That must be a typo.

That wasn't a typo .

Jonathan Givony wrote this about Martin

Quote:
Martin once again had no problem showing that being a very good and extremely promising NBA player should and does translate to being a fantastic player in the summer league. He had no problem being the focal part of Sacramento’s offense, taking the go-to role on his shoulders and producing points nearly every time he touched the ball.

Martin is far too athletic for anyone here to stay in front of. His first step is lightning quick and he is crafty enough his ball-handling and shot creating skills to get into the paint whenever he pleases. Even though his off-balance floater wasn’t always falling for him, particularly early on, he kept attacking the rim relentlessly and was rewarded for his trouble with numerous trips to he free throw line. Martin enjoys pulling down rebounds and igniting the fast break as well, always looking to push the tempo of the game and being extremely intelligent in dropping it off to the open man after a drive or using the glass to score the points himself. When coming off screens from mid-range, Martin has the craftiness to bait his man in the air and earn two free throws, something he did on more than one occasion.

Just like he’s done in his first two games here, Martin took a bit of a backseat in the 2nd half and let some of his less unheralded teammates take over the spotlight. He still got his points, though, mostly off quick drives and baiting guys into the air for a foul from mid-range.

That's not even the most surprising stats. The most surprising stats is Amare fouled out with 10 fouls.

Cheikh Samb had 8 points, 5 rebounds. and 2 assists

His summer league jersey no. is 18, Kobe Bryant scored 81 in a game
last season on the Toronto Raptors. Toronto Raptors team name has one S, as does Cheikh's entire name.

I'm just afraid that the stars were aligned for us to draft Cheikh Samb, but he slipped through our fingers because of Mitch.

Trade Odom straight up for Samb, and we have a dynasty in the making.....

DO IT MITCH!!!
