Quote:
The Game

The Lakers starting unit had Marcus Slaughter starting ahead of Marcus Douthit. It helped quite a bit with the triangle sequences. Slaughter was more comfortable hitting from midrange and the spacing within the offensive sets were a lot cleaner. Three additional triangle sequences were introduced, one which included a high-low sequence to isolate Bynum on the low block with room to operate. After a relatively tight 1st half and a halftime score of 38-37 in Dallas’s favor, the starting unit helped blowout the Dallas B-Team for a 34 to 15 3rd quarter, and the 2nd string extended the lead with a 27-17 4th quarter, with the Final score of 97-69.

The Mavericks

Considering this was the B-Team, the only standout talents were Jelani McCoy and DeAngelo Collins. No one stood out as an NBA caliber talent.

The Lakers

Jordan Farmar continues to exhibit high IQ and triple threat skill levels. He demonstrated 3 teardrop shots from 5′ off of dribble penetration. His IQ shows defensively as he continues...

Danilo Pinnock had a solid game, also hitting from midrange and finishing around the basket as well. What I noticed differently about today’s game was his ability to initiate, and push in transition while making the correct decisions in a semi-transition situation. He created high percentage shots for teammates and played solid defense with a lot of deflections. In 20 minute he finished with 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting, 3 rebounds, 1 assists, and 1 blocked shot. I do think that if he came out last season with his game polished the way it is now, he would be challenging Smush Parker for the starting PG slot. There are intangibles to Pinnock’s game that Parker doesn’t have just yet, especially in regards to semi-transition play, decision-making, execution of the offense, and midrange game.

Me likey!

any other thoughts on bynums athleticism?

im starting to worry about it.
I still recal him getting blocked by pg's and the like. Sometimes not even getting full extention for a dunk, losing the ball in the cyclinder before he "dunks" because of not elevating high enough.

Is that stuff still happening?

This is the setting where he should be showing special athletic abilitys that will seperate him.

He is as fresh as he is gonna get and should be displaying at the very least glimpses of athletic explosion.

Don't worry about it. I questioned it a lot last season as well.

The added strength has helped a bit, and he's more consistent using near full-vert. The thing is, he has to really take time and gather himself before he tries to dunk it (which at least, he's trying to do everytime.).

He's definitely a guy that could use a lot of help with the quick-twitch muscle department in his ankles, because he's just a tad, too slow getting off the ground.

Well, from Madsen, to Rush, Cook, Walton.... then Turiaf, Bynum, Wafer... now Pinnock, Farmar

... not only has the quality of play improved, but the talent is SO MUCH better compared to Rush, Cook, Walton.

Mike,

I was wondering if you have heard or seen anything about players adjusting to the new NBA ball?

Thanks.

Nothing. I don't see any real changes with shot percentages, shot releases, ability to catch, ball-handling, etc.

This is the dominance we were hoping to see from Bynum in the SPL. I didn't know what to think of Pinnock when we traded for him, but he sounds like a better-coached version of Wafer with a better attitude (which probably goes hand in hand with the coaching). Wafer may excel as a microwave shooter off the bench, but Shammond's going to have that role next year. It doesn't look good for Wafer's Laker career.

I don't really understand your response. It was just a simple question. It's a different ball made out of microfiber. I was just curious.

You mean how he is with rookies?

By the way, am I now getting too excited at Farmar? Sounds like Cassell Jr. to me, in that he knows the game and is a born leader, and someone whose presence alone can turn the mentality of the club's into a winner? We need somebody like this next to Kobe. You think he can step in and play 15-20 mpg under Phil this year?

Mitch said yesterday that you should not expect much play from Farmar this year and that is why the deal for a "vet" PG (likely to be Shammond Williams).

That said, from watching Farmar play yesterday, he is making a huge statement for playing time this year and it won't be an easy decision to leave him on the bench.

If I remember correctly, the same was said about Wafer. Matter of fact, everyone thought he should be our starting point guard, based on his play in the spl. I'll wait and see how training camp and preseason goes before I jump on the Farmar bandwagon, although I would love it if he is the next sam cassell. It would be great for our team!
