PostPosted: Mon May 15, 2006 10:20 am    Post subject: overpriced restaurants

so I decide to take my wife out to dinner for mothers day and I take her to this italian restaurant about half a mile from my house.
I've passed by this place about a million times It looks very eligent but not valet-elegent. so we get inside and to my surprise its fairly empty.
a mexican man with a bad italian accent takes our order and my wife orders her favorite dish fettichini alfredo and I order spagetti and meat balls and two cokes, anyways when our bill comes it already includes the tip in it and the total is,is,is........................$48 bucks are you kidding me!
for two plates!

I was at the Olvie garden not too long ago. My wife and I ordered two plates of their stuffed chicken marsala, along with two lemonades..when i got the bil it was $40+ !!

everything is pricy nowadays...

Remember when you could treat a girl to the movies for about 20 bucks?
Remember drive -in's?
Remember when 3 dollars worth of gas took you everywhere and BACK!?

You went to a "nice" Italian restaurant and ordered Alfredo, and Spaghetti? You don't go to a nice restaurant and order the Italian ethnic equivalent of Macaroni & Cheese. That was your problem right there. Next time work on something a little less mainstream american Chef Boyardee.

What restaurant?

48 bucks for a dinner for two ain't soo bad....unless the food sucked. That's about average if I'm not drinking.

I agree with Moneyshot though....about the Chef B0yardee-ness of the order..but if you like it, knock yoself out.

The bigger issue is that they added a tip already for 2 people...that's a very uncommon practice. The food does sound overpriced....those dishes shouldn't be over 11.95 anywhere.

My favorite line is the part about the "Mexican man with the bad Italian accent."

Are you sure you didn't walk into a skit from Monty Python's Flying Circus, or maybe Fawlty Towers?

Be glad you're not in London. If you take a date to a "gastropub", that's usually about £8-£16 per entree plus starter courses and side orders. And the drinks. Last time I took a date to one of those places, the tab came out to about £42. Or about $76 at the time. These places are just slightly nicer pubs with upscale menus. That's it. The food was pretty good. But not $76 good.

Throw in a comparison here: Several years ago, I took my ex-wife to dinner in the Sky Room (iirc) at the Hotel Valencia in La Jolla at sunset, beautiful, romantic, cozy, they wait on you hand and foot. The tab was $231. Not sure if it was worth that much money, but the food was fabulously good.

$48 bucks on dinner for two is not bad at all. It it was olive garden quality I'd say you got ripped off, but if it was better than your typical chain restaurant you got a good deal.

Next time take her to the cellar in fullerton or yamashiro's in hollywood great food.

Speaking of overpriced restaurants.....

For the Love of God....DO NOT and I mean DO NOT got to Yamashiro EVER. Most ridiculous restaurant I've ever been to. When I say the food was bad....I mean the food was BAD....It tasted like my food was boiled and in water then served.....absolutely no flavor....and the sushi was horrendous. I'm making it my personal mission to tell everybody about this horrible place. Yamashiro in the Hollywood hilss Do NOT go there.

Oh yeah, my girl took me there for my birthday....and they brought out the dessert for us....for my birthday....great, right? THEY FREAKING CHARGED US FOR IT!!!!!!!! It still pisses me off to this day.

Worst. Restaurant. Ever.

My wife, son and I dropped $65 at Islands for lunch the other day. Without any alcohol. I am still trying to figure out how you do that with three people.

I took my girl out to Captain Jack's in Sunset Beach. Great Food and Service... She loves crab legs and Captain Jack's probably has the best we've ever had. Total Bill came up to about 140 and I left a 40 dollar tip. Great place... My nephew is going to the prom... and I am taking him to L'Opera in Downtown Long Beach to dinner and teach him and walk him thru the night.. ie: valet parking.. sittin down.. ordering.. tipping. etc...

That does seem quite high for Islands...especially with no booze on the tab.

Had a happy hour hamburger at McCormick and Schmicks last night for $1.95....a pint of stella to go with that and I was out $5.95 before tip.
