Notebook: Defense a concern

OAKLAND - - While Kobe Bryant sat in a chair with his head in his hands Thursday, looking miserable because of a sinus infection, the rest of the Lakers practiced their defense.

In their past 10 losses, the Lakers gave up 100 points or more nine times. In the other game, they allowed 99.

The Lakers have allowed 105.4 points per game in those 10 losses.

"Cohesiveness and chemistry on defense has to be a team thing, and it's time," Lamar Odom said. "To make the playoffs, you definitely got to be one of the best defensive teams in the league. We're not one of the best defensive teams in the league."

The Lakers will see tonight if their defense has improved when they play the Golden State Warriors. Bryant will play despite his illness.

The Warriors are averaging 98.54 points per game, 10th best in the NBA. They also are expecting point guard Baron Davis, who has missed the past seven games with a right ankle sprain, to return tonight.

If Davis plays, he'll push the ball and apply pressure on the Lakers defense.

"We're changing the type of defensive roles that we have," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "We're playing a little bit different types of defenses."

NBA: `D' is still the key for Lakers
L.A. needs to clamp down as season winds down.
By Ross Siler, Staff writer

OAKLAND — A simple question to ask 58 games into the NBA season: What would the Lakers' record be if they simply found the consistency to be an average defensive team every night?

Safe to say, they wouldn't be quite as worried about holding off Sacramento and Utah for the Western Conference's eighth and final playoff spot.

The Lakers (29-29) have lost 12 games this season in which they scored enough to win had they held the opposing team to its season average. By contrast, they have won only five games where the other team could say the same thing.

The latest such loss came Wednesday night, when the Lakers gave up 99 points to a Portland team averaging a league-low 89.0 points per game this season. It's all the difference between the Lakers being a .500 team and one with greater aspirations.

"It's something we've got to grasp if we want to go to the playoffs this year," center Chris Mihm said. "We've got to get that through our heads and understand that defense keys our offense. It's not the other way around."

Ailing, Reeling With Nowhere to Go but ...

OAKLAND — Kobe Bryant left Thursday's film session with his head down, a box of tissues in his right hand and the hood of his gray sweatshirt pulled over his head, the picture of an ailing player on a similarly hurting team.

Battling a sinus infection and an earache, Bryant is expected to play tonight against Golden State, and the Lakers are also expected to show up, presumably, although not much can be taken for granted after losses to Atlanta, Boston and Portland in the last couple of weeks.

The Lakers are still 1 1/2 games ahead of Utah and Sacramento for the eighth and final playoff berth in the Western Conference, but there are few guarantees with a game against Detroit and two against San Antonio in the next seven days.

"The way we're playing, we don't have a shot in hell to beat a team like Detroit or San Antonio, the Utahs, the guys that's going to make it hard," Lamar Odom said.

Lakers notes: Law of averages isn't computing

Despite a strong performance from an ill Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers couldn't avoid a loss to woeful Portland in their last outing.

This season, even a big game from a healthy Bryant often isn't enough to bring the Lakers a victory.

Los Angeles looks to avoid falling below the .500 mark when it take on the Golden State Warriors in the teams' third meeting of 2005-06.

Battling the flu, Bryant still managed to score 35 points, but Los Angeles lost 99-93 on the road to the Trail Blazers on Wednesday night for its third loss in four games.

Bryant missed 10 of his first 13 shots, but finished 15-of-15 from the free-throw line. He had 19 points during the third quarter, but the rest of the Lakers only managed four points in the period as Los Angeles was outscored 30-23.

"I'm just achy. You've got to push through it," Bryant said. "My teammates talked about doing a better job trying to pick me up sometimes and not having me shoulder the whole load all the time."

That's something the Lakers have been unable to do all season. Bryant averages 34.9 points per game, almost equal to the combined efforts of the team's next top three scorers. Lamar Odom, Smush Parker and Chris Mihm average 35.7 points.

"We don't play a good offensive game and we can't win," said Odom, who had 16 points Wednesday. "That puts Kobe in a bind. He's got to get 35 or 40 points for us to win. We should be embarrassed. I know I am."

LA Lakers 106, Golden State 94

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Kobe Bryant became the youngest NBA player to score 16,000 points, finishing with 42 in the Los Angeles Lakers' 106-94 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night.

Chris Mihm added 16 points, but Bryant put on another one-man show for the large contingent of Lakers fans among the Golden State franchise-record crowd of 20,375 at the sold-out Arena.

With a jumper late in the first quarter, the NBA's leading scorer this season got his 16,000th career point at 27 years and 192 days old -- four days earlier than Wilt Chamberlain, who reached the mark in 1964.

Bryant also scored nine straight points for the Lakers in the final 5 minutes, including seven after Golden State trimmed a 21-point deficit to nine on Baron Davis' 3-pointer with 3:08 to play. Bryant scored 40 points for the 16th time this season.

Los Angeles avoided falling below .500 for the first time in two months with its third straight win over Golden State this season.

Another Kobe milestone as Lakers win

OAKLAND, Calif. - Kobe Bryant became the youngest NBA player to score 16,000 points, finishing with 42 in the Los Angeles Lakers' 106-94 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night.

Chris Mihm added 16 points, but Bryant put on another one-man show for the large contingent of Lakers fans among the Golden State franchise-record crowd of 20,375 at the sold-out Arena.

With a jumper late in the first quarter, the NBA's leading scorer this season got his 16,000th career point at 27 years and 192 days old - four days earlier than Wilt Chamberlain, who reached the mark in 1964.

Los Angeles avoided falling below .500 for the first time in two months with its third straight win over Golden State this season.

Jason Richardson scored 27 for the Warriors, who lost for the fifth time in six games since the All-Star break to match the worst stretch of their once-promising season. Golden State still is in the playoff chase, but wasted its latest chance to cut its deficit behind the eighth-place Lakers to 2 1/2 games.
