I actually think Frank Mason III is good enough to play in the NBA, certainly as a 14-15th man who gets spot minutes due to injury.

But with Westbrook, Nunn and Rondo on the team... I'm not entirely sure what the point of this is. My guess would be that we only want to play Westbrook in 3 of these preseason games, we don't want to play Rondo more than 10mpg or Nunn more than ~20mpg in them, so the PG minutes have to go to somebody... enter Frank Mason III?

Would have thought we needed another wing in camp more than a small guard.

This has to be the most reasonable explanation.....because it's definitely not a position of need. No way.

The continued stockpiling of Guards is fascinating. Why?

Especially when the front court is so thin. One injury or even a night off throws the entire rotation off. There are no deep reserves.

Imagine for a moment that Jordan misses ten games. Now Howard and Davis forced to play heavy C mins. With James, Melo and Ariza now playing PF ?

Fascinated to see how this guard heavy roster finalizes. Who makes the team? Who makes the rotation? Who gets DNPs and 4th quarter blow out mins? So many possibilities. Going to be a hell of a season working it out.

I thought they were seeing if they were gonna sign him to a 2-Way but players who have more than 4 years experience don’t qualify for it.

I have no issue with Mason or any of the other Guards currently on the roster. The situation or roster spots and mpg will sort itself out. If he adds something to the team over all the others, awesome!

My comments are more about the strategy of the sheer number of guards currently on the roster and what I perceive as a lack of depth in the front court.

There can’t be one C/F added by two way or practice squad? No C/ PF capable of being player #14 with an occasional appearance as needed? Oliver ?

I just find it a perplexing strategy.

One day later...

The Los Angeles Lakers have waived guard Frank Mason III.

Reminds me of an old joke I heard awhile back: "You told me your house was big, but when I walked through the front door I tripped over the back fence."

Hahaha…

But expect to see a lot of this in the coming days to earn player rights for a team’s gleague affiliate. South Bay just traded for his rights as well since he belonged to another gleague team. And they really wanted him too…giving up a dude tgat had the legendary Laker name of Hearn, while also giving up both the overall 1st pick in the gleague draft as well as the first pick in the 2nd round.

Quote:
In a three-team trade, South Bay has acquired the returning player rights to 2020 G League MVP Frank Mason III while sending the returning player rights to Reggie Hearn and a second-round pick in the 2021 Draft to the Memphis Hustle and a first-round pick in the 2021 Draft to the Delaware Blue Coats.

This will make it easier to have dude stay within our system while giving him an opportunity at a 2-way with us. With the new rule change, there is no deadline now to roster a 2-way player during the regular season and you can now carry them into the postseason too.

FYI: to my knowledge, he can still be swooped up by another team if given a standard NBA contract, but can’t be given a 2-way contract by another NBA team.

We also have 890k remaining from our mMLE, so that could still be in play within the season to offer any of our 2-way/Gleague players a “rest of season” BBA contract that can be up to 3 years in length. We should turn to that option (which will continually prorate downwards after Jan 10th) if we strike out during buyoutSZN. Of course, that’s all contingent on if we’re willing to pay the additional tax for it.
