Is the Spurs shortened season? Everyone had the same advantages.

You're really asking this on a Lakers board? Good grief. Thank goodness we only have about 10 more days to go.

I asked this before the bubble started and the vote was 72-8.

I blame Baseball for people being OBSESSED with putting asterisks on anything.

The asterisk thing is silly in most of these cases. It's something that the losers do to justify their loss.

There is just as strong if not stronger an argument to be made that the bubble title was one of the more difficult seasons to win it with the living conditions, and the fact that people were locked in their homes hoping for a return to some normalcy.

An asterisks in sports, is when 1 team played with an unfair advantage against other teams.

The Lakers, finished with the best record in the west. Because of that, they would have had home court advantage, throughout the playoffs. Due to the bubble, they ended up not having it, leveling the playing field and stripping them of an earned advantage.

The death of Kobe hung over the team and the franchise the entire season, a burden that no other team had to deal with.

According to the players, the bubble was stressful, tedious environment that really wore on the players. If you were to win the title, you would have had to deal with those circumstances for over 3 months, testing your chemistry and mental toughness.

The Lakers fought through all of that and won the title. Calling the title a Mickey Mouse title or labeling it as a asterisk is the dumbest $h!t ever. It reeks of jealousy and lunacy. For people, in this group to even suggest such a thing is very disappointing.

I mean, they had an arguably bigger advantage than HCA in the nicer hotel rooms. Nicer hotel rooms = Higher quality of rest and therefore better on-court performance. Wasn’t really a fair arrangement.

So basically all of the teams, whose players have the nicest homes, play better.....got it!

Absolutely. Look at who owns the most expensive homes in the league. Then look at who the top players are. You don’t think there’s any correlation? That there’s really no advantage to having a home basketball court to practice in or a bathtub to take ice baths in?

The average NBA player makes a measly $8 million a year. The minimum is $920,000 a year.

You really think any one of them can't afford a "bathtub to take ice baths in"?

Is this real?
All players have close to the same access to trainers, healthy lifestyle etc. why does melo seemingly take better care of his body today different than when younger. The science of doing it right has always been there.

Show me what players don’t have a home court and then let’s look at how they spend their money.

The top players spend money to make money. That means making life on the court the number 1 priority.

Kobe flew to Germany. Every player makes enough to maximize their skill and health. Some choose some don’t.

Why asterisk? Why would you want to bring this up again? The Spurs won the strike shortened season in 1999 but nobody talked about putting an asterisk. The Bucks just won this year's championship with most of the top players out but nobody talked about putting an asterisk.

Let's not talk about asterisks. The pandemic affected all teams equally.

Do we hold Celtics titles when there were 8 teams in same regard as modern championships?

Back then segregation/racism was rampant. Were the best athletes able to compete?

That was my first thought too.. idk if i'm missing some sarcasm to the above replies? If not, that's mind blowing they really believe those statements

We're talking about a league where even the bench warmers are multi-millionaires and have access to as much elite training and body maintenance as they want. To bring up a ice bath like it's some advantage to only the guys making 30-40+ million but not the ones making 6-10 million a year is hilariously absurd. Same thing with a in home basketball court, that's an investment and any player that's been in the NBA for a year or two could absolutely afford one if they wanted.

Nobody outside of people that hate the opposing team ever really brings up the "asterisk" bs after a couple years anyways.. i dislike tf out of the entire Spurs organization but they're Championship in the shortened season still counts just as much today as it did when they got.

You can play "pretend" all you want though with "maybes".. I'd add that if the Lakers actually got legitimate rest like the majority of the NBA they would have been more fresh to start this past season and gone on to steamroll the NBA to win a Championship

That is the rub, not every team returned from the COVID shut down, just the NBA office chosen ones. It wouldn’t have made a difference if they had but it is the only season in NBA history where the league told teams to stay home instead of playing their schedules.

Actually people were talking about giving the Spurs an asterisk, namely Laker fans. But there are no asterisk titles, to answer the poll question.

I don't believe in asterisks in sports but I DO believe in CONTEXT.

Nothing wrong with discussing the details of how championships went down. Each one is different. There's no doubt in my mind that a shortened season plus nearly a half-year long hiatus between regular season and playoffs greatly benefitted a Lakers team with an aging LeBron (who has been injured 2 out of the 3 seasons he's been with the Lakers) and an injury-prone AD as their two best players (not to mention past their prime key contributors like Rondo and Dwight Howard).

I chuckle at the responses on this site though, because I guarantee had the Clippers or, god forbid, the Celtics been champions many of you would be the first to discredit it.
