IMO, had Karl Malone stayed healthy, the Lakers would've beaten Detroit.
Also, IIRC, Rasho Nesterovic injured Kobe's shoulder during the WCF. _________________ On Lakersground, a concern troll is someone who is a fan of another team, but pretends to be a Lakers fan with "concerns".

2004 by a large margin for me. Shaq and Kobe were in there Prime and would easily be the two best players in the series considering ages especially. The depth and role players have the potential to be quite a bit better on this years roster though. I'd take the top 2 talent being superior over the better depth all day.
Older Dwight would get absolutely manhandled by a prime Shaq in an embarrassing fashion and once he got 2 fouls early on it's kind of game over. Then you got AD going from the super physical Malone to Shaq if he slides to the 5 at all
They'd throw a prime Kobe on Bron and just let Westbrook get whatever he can probably against Fisher and be extremely happy even if he somehow managed to drop 40 a game.
Just a horrible matchup for this years team. It would be even worse for the Nets though.

Sigh, Superteam, Prime Kobe-Prime CP3-Prime Dwight would’ve run the table for a while, might even delay the GS 3pt style by couple years and kept Bron at 1 ring (his Lakers one of course) today
Lord, I need you to understand that Shaq & Kobe were the best collabros since Taco Bell & KFC. They were the Don Dadas of the game and they can’t ever be challenged for the throne!
The ops saw that duo roll up and you knew they was thinking one thing: “guess who’s going to gel tonight?!”
Better question is, who’s going to have a better record: Ye or Drizzy? _________________ Not familiar with the salary cap/CBA rules & how it impacts our Lakers?

I have never bought this narrative/excuse. I don't believe 41 yr old Malone alone swings a 1-4 series. If it were a closer series, then maybe he tips the scale. Kobe shot an abysmal 37% for that series. All season long, he had other things on his mind. Pistons demolished us, plain and simple.
This is not a super team! These are a bunch of pass their prime, old geezers that will be lucky to make the playoffs......at least that’s what the media is trying to convince people of.

A 41 year old Malone checked Yao when Shaq fouled out. A 41 year old Malone guarded Tim one on one. A 41 year old Malone defended KG solo and even had a game where he basically watched him. That 41 year old Malone handles Sheed easily because he’s the weakest of the bunch and if he’s handled the series is over

Yeah, not to mention they were def. not "Demolishing" us at all for the first two games when it was 1-1. He had injured it game 2 where he played through it and we got the win but game 3 he was clearly hampered a lot and by the third quarter when he left the game for good the series pretty much ended there. You're not only losing Malone who had been averaging right around 40mpg in the Playoffs and playing great like you talk about but suddenly his minutes are being taken over by the absolutely abysmal Medvedenko who had hardly played at all in the Playoffs for a reason. This is obviously a massive loss defensively but offensively as well now that the Pistons could pretty much ignore him so Kobe and Shaq who already had an insane amount of responsibility playing nearly entire games now have to do more offensively with more attention on them.
That team was the poster child for a "top heavy" team. Give Detroit credit for taking advantage but like most I fully believe we still pull it out with Malone in there. I remember an interview with Payton giving this as the main reason as well along with Kobe still being so young and didn't have that maturity yet to still pull it off like he would have likely done a few years later.
After the Karl Malone injury, they guarded Rasheed Wallace with Slava Medvedenko and Luke Walton (!!) Rasheed went off. Karl Malone was outstanding against Yao Ming, Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett — highlighted by pulling the chair out from under each of them (!!)
Duncan 28 Pts 53 Fg% 12 Reb in 2003 vs. 21 Pts 47 Fg% 12 Reb in 2004
Garnett 27 Pts 52 Fg% 16 Reb in 2003 vs. 24 Pts 46 Fg% 13 Reb in 2004
Slava Medvedenko and Luke Walton . Rasheed feasted on that mismatch, that’s where Larry Brown “out coached” Phil Jackson

Love hearing that, don’t matter if we ‘superteam’ or not, we contender. We basically upgraded our starting ‘ PG’ (let Bron play offball) from Bradley to Schroeder to Westbrook, bigs pretty much same, 3 pt shooting upgraded, 6th man from Kuz to Melo (same ish)… everything is secondary to Bron’s age and AD’s leap into MVP/DPOY level

The 03-04 squad had no bench depth, but their top heavy players (Kobe, Shaq, Malone, Payton) were good enough to beat the Pistons if they had health. Kobe going through the SA trial + Malone going down pretty much derailed their chances against a historic Pistons defense. They ran into arguably the best defensive team of all time, and Prince was able to get the best of Kobe.
The current squad has ample depth to compensate for injuries to James, AD or Russ.

41 year old Malone didn’t need to do nearly as much as a younger Malone. Playing next to Shaq and Kobe, Malone just needed to defend, rebound, be physical, set screens, make good decisions, be a good locker room guy and occasionally score. So he wasn’t going to wear himself out carrying the team and attracted less defensive attention playing next to bigger stars.
He also had almost never gotten injured before that season, so his body didn’t have the usual wear and tear that one might see from a 41 year old. Plus he didn’t have a ring so he was still hungry to win.
Also Malone’s backup was injured.
Older players often do join championship teams to get that ring and they often do contribute on those teams. A difference with Malone is at his age, he could contribute a lot more. There is a reason he had the chance to break the all-time scoring record.

Actually we never played Detroit with a healthy Malone. Malone got injured in the WCF and his injury got worse in the Finals.
