L.A. sends Wafer to the NBDL
By Ross Siler, Staff Writer

The Lakers assigned rookie guard Von Wafer on Monday to the NBA Development League's Fort Worth (Texas) Flyers, the first time the team has taken advantage of the NBA's new minor-league system.

Wafer was traveling to Roanoke (Va.) and is expected to play for the Flyers tonight and Wednesday. The 20-year-old guard had been on the inactive list since Chris Mihm returned from a shoulder injury after the All-Star break.

"As long as he's in shape and ready to play, which I'm sure he is, we'll get him on the court," Fort Worth coach Sam Vincent said. "We'll give him a crash course on our sets and see how he fits in."

Vincent said he talked with Lakers coach Phil Jackson assured him that Wafer would get playing time with the Flyers, who had Portland's Martell Webster play with them earlier this season.

Wafer, who has averaged 1.3 points and played in 16 games for the Lakers, will be joined with the Flyers by Dallas forward Josh Powell, who was assigned by the Mavericks on Sunday.

There is no timetable for Wafer to be recalled. The Lakers waited to assign him until after taking the team picture Monday.

Hitting the wall: The NBA will have a new 19-year-old age limit for this June's draft, but Jackson believes it takes years beyond that for a player to establish himself in the league.

By that five-year standard, the Lakers have only four regulars who fit the bill - Kobe Bryant, Devean George, Lamar Odom and Mihm.

Late lapses, defense tripping up Lakers

By KEVIN DING
The Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES – Although the Lakers continue to lament losing games in the final minute after their eighth such defeat Sunday against Boston, they have won seven other games decided in the final minute.

So besides the Lakers having many close games, their late-game execution hasn't been as consistently bad as it might seem. The reality of the loss to Boston was articulated by Lakers forward Lamar Odom, who understood that the Lakers chased the Celtics the second half, pulled even momentarily, and then lost.

"We've got to put ourselves in position where we're going for the kill at the end of games," Odom said.

To get there, the Lakers must defend better. In the Lakers' past 12 losses, they have allowed at least 100 points - averaging 107.7 points allowed. In the Lakers' past five victories, they have allowed fewer than 100 points - averaging 86 points allowed.

"We really need to execute and get back to playing defense with a sense of urgency until the end of the fourth quarter," Kobe Bryant said.

What ailed the Lakers most Sunday were basic lapses in defensive execution. Their big men did not aggressively show on Boston's pick-and-rolls, and they were late helping the perimeter players protect the lane on Boston's drives.

A Non-Playoff Finish Could Become Worse
By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer
February 28 2006

There may not be a silver lining for the Lakers if they don't make the playoffs.

They could miss out on the postseason for the second consecutive season and still not have a draft lottery pick.

As part of a five-player trade in August 2004, the Lakers sent a first-round pick to Boston that was lottery-protected last season — meaning the Lakers, because their choice was a lottery choice, got to keep it and draft 17-year-old Andrew Bynum.

But they lose the pick this year unless it is among the draft's top 11. There are 14 picks overall in the lottery.

This off-season's grand prize: Garnett
But Bulls not likely to land disgruntled Timberwolves star

Snippet: "5. Los Angeles Lakers: Garnett is their rebuilding plan with Amare Stoudemire and Yao Ming having re-signed. Garnett and Kobe Bryant would be enough to be back in serious contention. Perhaps Lamar Odom, promising kid center Andrew Bynum, whomever else they may want and a No. 1 draft pick? It's not like the Lakers got that much for O'Neal. If Garnett chooses a place to go and is insistent, the Timberwolves have to get the best they can to avoid a scene. And Garnett, who some label a high-level Don Knotts-type since he is best as a supporting man in the end, badly needs a finisher to play with to have the kind of ultimate success he seeks."

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Kobe Bryant had 28 points and eight assists to lead the Los Angeles Lakers over the Orlando Magic 102-87 on Tuesday night.

Smush Parker added 17 points and seven assists for the Lakers (29-28), who took control of the game with a third-quarter scoring burst.

Lamar Odom had eight points, 12 rebounds and five assists as Los Angeles climbed back above the .500 mark. Chris Mihm and Brian Cook had 12 points apiece in the Lakers' balanced attack, Kwame Brown had 11 and Ronny Turiaf 10.

Grant Hill, obviously getting over the sports hernia problem that's dogged him, led the Magic with 23 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. Dwight Howard had 15 points and nine rebounds for Orlando, which lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

After a close first half, the Lakers took control with a 22-4 run over a six-minute span of the third quarter.
