Just Like Old Times... Except in a Laker jersey. Thanks, Cleveland. We’re happy to have him.

LeBron outscored the Cavs 21-17 in the fourth quarter alone tonight on his way to a season-high 46 points.

“I just want to be that dominant,” LeBron said afterward.

They needed him to step it up with most of the team requiring their jumpshots to be recalibrated. The Lakers played an awful third, quite possibly the ugliest quarter offensively despite scoring 22, and trailed by 2 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, he took over early getting to the rim on the break for scores, then draining the three ball from the logo. In the final minutes, he’d sink a big three from the wing, then the dagger, a turnaround from the corner. Ball game.

The Lakers took the 115-108 win and stretched their road record to 10-0.

LeBron -- -- My goodness. I would say it was vintage LeBron, but he drained 7-11 from three in this one. That’s a different version of LeBron that started maybe back when the Spurs dared him to shoot threes in Finals and beat them from the perimeter. Tonight, again and again the Cavs would go under screens and LeBron would look to make them pay. He scored 23 points on 9-10 shooting in the first half. That included 4-5 from three. One of those threes was on a great passing sequence (6 passes) before coming back to LeBron for the wide open look. He also had the fade going in the post (and added in a nice jumphook) in the half. To open the fourth quarter, he got the Lakers out in transition for three straight buckets, including swiping a pass on the perimeter and taking it for a dunk. In between threes late in the game, he’d find AD with a bounce pass for a dunk. Then, the dagger corner turnaround with defenders on him. Wow. The Stats: He scored 46 points on 19-26 shooting (7-11 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 6 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 38 minutes. He was a +11..

Davis -- -- Well, I guess it was AD’s turn in his hometown and tonight it was LeBron. Offensively, it was a largely perimeter oriented game where the shot was way off the mark. He was facing some bigger defenders so he leaned into more of that finesse game and it just wasn’t there. His scores were largely setup by others tonight. Defensively, he had 3 blocks and 3 steals. I think all three of his blocks were against Drummond. He held his own against him and we went to AD at the C quite a bit with Gasol struggling in foul trouble early. “Tonight, I tried to do it on the defensive end,” AD said with LeBron taking over the scoring load. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 5-16 shooting (0-3 from three, 7-9 from the line) to go with 10 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 36 minutes. He was a -5.

Schröder -- -- He was able to get into his midrange for some pull-ups at the elbow. He also blew past defenders for a couple layups, as well. It was still a bit of a choppy game offensively as he even missed a couple of FTs. He was still in the closing lineup as our PG. That seems to be Vogel’s go to right now. This is the kind of game where you miss some of Rondo’s playmaking. Schröder had just 1 assist and 3 turnovers. One of those turnovers was a really bad backcourt pass that went right out of bounds. His passing turnovers will drive you nuts sometimes. I might give him a screen assist as he worked that corner sequence with AD to free him up and LeBron found Davis for the easy dunk off the bounce pass late in the game. While we have some pet plays like that in our book now, we’ve got a long way to go to get Dennis integrated and comfortable. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-9 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -3.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He struggled with the three-point shot in the first half, going 1-5 and then went 0-3 in the second half. Law of averages catching up with KCP tonight as that will lower his percentages quite a bit. Getting two or three more of those to drop really would have made a difference in this one, but no one outside of LeBron could hit. Some credit to the Laker guard defense keeping Sexton and Garland pretty quiet. They needed 27 shots to get 28 points. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 2-10 shooting (1-8 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists and 5 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -1.

Gasol -- -- Ugh. He picked up 3 fouls in 3 minutes and had to sit early. There are times when you have the old guys Gasol/LeBron out there on D where they do not move as much as they should. Gasol just can’t, but LeBron will take plays off defensively and the team has some issues with that. Man, Marc had a play in the second half where he was wide open under the hoop on a pass, and pumped faked the closing defenders and was fouled. Just no confidence at all in finishing at the rim. Late into Marc’s second stint he had some better moments challenging and defending the paint, but he ended up a -11 in 10 minutes and that certainly went with the eye test. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-1 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist and 3 fouls in 10 minutes. He was a -11.

Harrell -- -- Your third scorer tonight. He came in after 3 minutes when Gasol got into foul trouble, so that gave him some different minutes with the starters. I kind of liked seeing him out there as I think there’s potential that we run some of that lineup in the playoffs. He fit in fine with a +18 in his first 14 minutes, playing the garbage man role and getting setup on penetration. He was crashing the glass and finishing strong at the rim. One of those offensive boards came off a missed Laker FT and led to a three by KCP for a 4-point possession. He went at some off the bigger Cavs players, I think getting blocked just once. He muscled and dunked on McGee on one play. I’m looking forward to the Dwight/Harrell battle in the next one. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-9 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 6 boards (3 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block and 3 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +18.

Kuzma -- -- Career high on the offensive glass with 6. He was relentless crashing the offensive glass. Maybe subtract out a loose ball foul that led to FTs if you are trying to determine the effectiveness of his work there, but he’d also get a putback and had another that he pulled out and went up and under on for a score. Those were his only two buckets. He had a block again and also broke up a lob at the rim to save a hoop. He’s doing those little things that are much needed. I kind of wonder whether his energy shouldn’t be used around Gasol more to make up for some of that lack of mobility and ability to get to loose balls. Our Harrell, Morris, LeBron, Kuzma, Wes lineup can benefit from Kuz crashing the glass with Harrell since Kuz should generally always have a size advantage. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-5 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 8 boards (6 offensive), 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +10.

Caruso -- -- We don’t bring him in until 9 minutes into the second and fourth quarters. But he was out there with our Core Four to close the game. We ran that three guard unit with AC, KCP and Schröder with LeBron and AD. Once again, some great defensive plays by AC, including a big stop on Sexton on iso D in crunch time. Offensively, he also hit three from the wing after a scramble and kickout to him. Not a good shooting night. He does some other things, though. At the end of the half, he set a great screen for LeBron to use on his way to a dunk. AC ran into it, disguised which direction he was going and LeBron had a wide open lane. While AC is atop the three shooting in the league, he is really poor at anything in the midrange. He bricked badly early on trying to hit a 6-footer. He was blocked on another attempt. I just expect a miss on any of those pull-ups. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (1-3 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +0.

Morris -- -- Better minutes tonight. I can’t state how important he is for the team come playoff time when we’ll lean on Davis at the C spot. We’re going to want 5-out lineups so if Gasol is not ideal due to most matchups and Trezz can’t give you that spacing, we’ll see either LBJ or Morris at the PF with everything on the line. We played that all forward lineup with Harrell, Morris, LeBron, Kuzma and Matthews again tonight. They’ve looked much better in the last two times we’ve seen them, so that +/- is improving. Morris hit a three and moved the ball well. He and Harrell both pulled down missed FTs that allowed us to hit a three on the extra possession. (AD also had an offensive board on Schröder’s missed FTs and he scored FTs off it. Somehow the Cavs just could not keep us off the offensive glass in those situations.) Morris sank his corner three on an inside-out sequence that had the ball swung to him. He was fouled on another corner three from the other side. AC also found him for a dunk trailing the break. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-2 shooting (1-1 from three, 3-3 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a +5.

Matthews -- -- He had a +13 in his 10 minutes in the first half. He missed both threes he took. So while he wasn’t making much of an impact, we weren’t getting hurt. He couldn’t connect on a three in any of his attempts. He did have a good sequence where he backed his man down in the paint, then found Trezz with the interior feed for a layup. He also worked the screen for LeBron and that allowed LBJ to get to the rim on one to set up Trezz for an And-1. He triggered a Morris three by getting into the middle of the zone for a pass and quicking kicking it out. He found Trezz cutting in the middle of the paint with a great corner feed to ruin that zone again. Not direct scoring plays, but vet stuff that at least helped those lineups start looking more successful. With Morris and Matthews in the mix tonight, we saw no THT minutes again. I do think THT had some mistakes in the last game on defense/help D that may factor in sometimes to the playing time. We’ve seen that with some consistency. So there’s still some teaching moments going on there. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a +11.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: Up 6 with 1:50 left in the game, we gave up a three and Vogel called a timeout. Up 3 out of that, we cleared out the right side for LeBron/AD and LeBron drained a big wing three. Big play and the Lakers kept the Cavs in check off that.

Key Substitution: A couple things. First, let’s go with early in the game when Gasol got into foul trouble. We went with Trezz early instead of Morris. I liked seeing Harrell playing with the starters. They looked good. Hope we see more of that. Second, and the real key substitution was the Lakers closing lineup. AD, LBJ, AC, KCP and Schröder. We run AD at the center, have our three guards, spread that floor for LeBron on one end, get stops on the other. These seems to be the go to closing lineup for Vogel.

Key Stats: The Lakers gave up 15 offensive boards, but they also got that many on the other end. Neither team was especially effective at securing their defensive glass. Despite the Cavs size, the Lakers had a 7-3 advantage on shotblocks.

Coach’s Challenge: Midway in the third, AD attacked and was tripped up. The Cavs challenged. Unsuccessful. They really wasted that one. For the Lakers, they used theirs with 9:26 left in the fourth when LeBron blocked a shot at the rim out of bounds and they called a goaltend. We won the challenge and saved a bucket.

Thanks DB, another AAA summary

Was agitated about that third quarter, just felt like the Lakers were allowing Cleveland's physical play get to them and they were offensively pretty bad to watch. But in the fourth, they started straightening some things out on defense, which of course helped as LBJ took over the game.

Couple of things:

1. I have not perused the play by play but I could swear from about the 3-4 minute of the 3rd and into the point of the game in the 4th where LBJ hit the logo 3 (about 5 minute mark?), the Lakers must have missed every.single.jumpshot. It was crazy. All scoring was at the rim or FT line. Not just 3's, any jumper. That changed once LBJ got hot to end the game.

2. You can pretty much tell where this team is at based on an opponent's scoring. If the Lakers give up a 30+ quarter, they are not playing their type of basketball. This was again true tonight, as the Lakers were outplayed in the 2nd and 3rd - both quarters they gave up 30+ points. Of course, the 1st and 4th the Cavs struggled, and that was the difference.

Thanks DB!

Lebron’s 4th capped by that turnaround fadeaway jumper against the double team was absolutely Kobe like. Man Kobe would go in the unconscious mode and you knew that turnaround was going in no matter how many bodies flying and hands in his face.

How about Lebron though, obviously he’s been working on his turnaround and he’s been kind of devastating defenses with that and his 3 ball.

Incredible 4th Lebron, RIP Kobe.

DB is DA MAN!!!

Seems like Kuz is tring to be reincsrnstion of Dennis Rodman in the rebounding department. Of course, He is far way from Rodman's standards but it was good to see him crashing the boards.

Vogel seems to watch AC's minutes becsause he plays so hard and is invaluable during crunch time. A fresh AC at the end of the game is ideal

Hopefully Gasol will adjust to the defensive schemes so that he can be in the proper position. Hopefully charting the tendencies of today's NBA players that are playing at a faster pace then when he was in Memphis will show its advantages during the playoffs where thepay is much slower

Schoeder brings quickness that the Lakers have never had before. Hopefully Schoeder will learn how to play consistently at a high level befitting being on the court with a team that only thinks championships where every possession is greatly valued.

Hope that TNT is watching very closely to how the team is playing, learning how maximize his talents and how to play when every opponent is totally focused on beating the Lakers where there are no days off

Lebron has added the weapon of outside shooting to his game. He was a good respectable shooter, but defenses prefer he take that 3 instead of driving or bully ball or post ups. Now, he is a serious threat as a sniper, or someone that just pulls up. This is not just hot shooting. He has put in work, and historically greats like him tend to shoot their best from outside late in their careers. He may be doing it very very late into his career, but I do believe he has tactfully worked this into his game plan of attack. As he gets older and older, he has to find different ways to be effective. Being a 3 point scoring weapon, is something that can be added into his game that does not require elite athleticism. He is chasing MJ for all time GOAT, and if he can finish out his career as a great 3 point scoring threat, man. Going to be hard to argue against Bron.

Kuz, I really thought those rebounds stood out in this game. He went up and got them, and you could see him impose his will on the glass. If Kuzma cam become a good rebounder on a consistent basis, that is a new dimension to his game, with the already better 3 point shooting numbers.

AD, I found his game too soft on O, and he needs to be more physical when it is not going for him on O. But, the defense especially in the 4th, is really something. When we have Caruso-AD as our defensive combo at the 1-5, pretty much you can guarantee that the other team is going to get very very tough shots. Caruso flat out just stopped Sexton on some drives. Considering how quick Sexton is, that is one hell of an accomplishment. Caruso deserves to be on some all defensive teams with AD.

An important part of the game was when Lakers allowed Cavs to get back in it in the 3rd Q, and even take a lead in the 4th. It would seem that is when they got a lot of good defensive stops. Lebron was on fire, and able to keep the scoring up as our offense was not on. But defensively the way we picked it up in the 4th was great to see and the primary reason we won the game. We have that identity again where we can play a pretty weak game on O, and play shut down D when it matters, to get the W.

Every defensive issue people have with Gasol, gets solved with AD at the 5. Trez and Gasol just can not do what AD is capable of. We need to think of this, as buying time, in a game. Gasol-Trez just buy the time, until AD takes over. In the playoffs, we just will need to utilize AD earlier at the 5.

Yeah, this is the part that a lot of people need to focus on. What are the lineups we are actually going to be using in the playoffs? Everyone focuses on the bigman, but the real focus of that should be can we survive when AD rests or is in foul trouble? Do we have enough to hold it down? Right now that means Harrell, Gasol and Morris at the C spots if needed. If AD plays 40 minutes at C in the playoffs, can we get by with 4 minutes per half from that combo? Probably.

What worries me most is us actually having to put AD on someone who is a point of attack player where he won't be able to help as much. Durant or a Kawhi. Our greatest advantage is when he can scramble, cover two guys at once, shut down what would normally be a mismatch, recover to the rim, etc. No other C can do that like him.

So we have this Core Four. Who is the fifth? It's not a C, ever, in my mind. That's just a nice to have. On a nightly basis that fifth will change. In the playoffs, though, I'd really like another lengthy wing defender so we don't have to use AD there.

Good points about regular season vs. playoffs. I still would like to have one more serviceable rim protector just in case AD gets into foul trouble. I’m sure Pelinka is looking to add one more ahead of the playoffs.

Will AD be in foul trouble consistently during a 7 game series? I doubt it. I worry about us getting bled by someone else consistently that requires us to throw AD on that person to put out the fire...which as we saw in the Finals and it opened up other issues elsewhere.

I can see adding another big during the regular season. If Gasol gets injured and needs time off, for instance. We'd need it. But I think they will likely be used very little in the post season, like a McGee.

LeBron and AD are super flexible defensively and can handle most bigger wing players if Kuzma and Wes can't. But Kuzma doesn't have the strength and Wes doesn't have the size. Maybe McKinnie can be that guy, but that seems sketchy. Perhaps Vogel throws him in the mix as the season goes along.

I could for that viewpoint. I’m perfectly fine with more wing depth if AD is going to play true rim protector.

I have been disappointed with Wes on defense and he is 36 so maybe he is just about to fall off that cliff. Might be prudent to get more wing help particularly if they anticipate that the Clippers are the only true threat in the West.

Great point, DB.

AD-Bron-KCP-Caruso.

I wonder if sometimes that 5th player, if not Dennis, can be say Kuzma. He has the length to at least put a hand in the face of some of these elite wings. We did not trust Kuzma last year in the playoffs. Frank always went with Kieff or someone that can be trusted as a perimeter threat.

Wonder if we can trust Kuz a bit more in that situation, now that his 3 point shooting is respectable. If the opposing wing is someone like Jimmy Butler, I could see someone like Wesley be an effective 5th guy in that lineup. And just throwing it out there due to his length and athleticism, THT is an option, we can develop. Has a lot of length and strong base.

Ideally though, would make a little sense for us to make a trade or move at some point in the season to get one more long athletic forward who can play in those situations, especially if we keep avoiding trusting Kuzma in that role.

How about on that final play against Philly?

Can't blame him for staying with that lineup we had, but if you could have gone bigger there against the Sixers whose PG is tall anyway, that might have made a difference. But he wasn't even going to change it up situationally even tonight with Kuz for one play. (Sixers on their defensive end subbed in Matisse Thybulle for Curry.)
