John Thompson was a legend among legends in the greatest college basketball conference during the 80's/90's. Like so many of the iconic coaches in that conference during that era, the line "loved by many, hated by many more, and respected by all" is fitting.
RIP Big John

Allen Iverson, Patrick Hewing, Alonzo Mouring to name a few. He was more of a father than a coach. When I see coach Thompson I see a man with a white towel thrown over his shoulder. More amazing, just heard on FirstTake, 97% of his players got their degrees. I still remember that epic 1982 Finals game between Georgetown and UNC. College hoops' heyday.
If you haven't seen ESPN's 30-for-30 "Requiem for the Big East", I highly recommend it.

Legendary coach. In 2020 we've now lost Hall Of Fame coaches Lute Olson, Eddie Sutton, and now Thompson. And of course, we lost Jerry Sloan as well. |
