Covid supposedly can’t be spread through ingestion— only by breathing it in or by touching your mouth/nose. Are buffets actually a sanitary risk or is it just paranoia?

(Though touching the same serving utensil could be a form of transmission.)

Thanks, it’s worse than I thought. Ever since the Feb report of some Singapore tech symposium attendees getting Covid-19 from a buffet, I’ve been holding off on all buffet-style places. Not sure if buffets outside of LV will be back anytime soon. Souplantation’s definitely going to be missed.

Where are all the germs coming from? People sneezing into their hands and then touching the utensils?

Don’t need to. You can be out and about and get exposed anywhere. Then you carry it around. You go to a buffet. You don’t wash your hands and touch the serving utensils. So just imagine how many other people touched it before and after you.

Plus not everyone has the same level of cleanliness. Eg washing hands. Using hand sanitizer.

Can’t you say the same thing about subways, buses, public bathrooms, door handles, library books?...

There used to be an Indian buffet I would go to, and this was well, well before COVID hit.

It was not the usual buffet where you would just take whatever you wanted. The food was behind a glass covering, with workers there (somewhat like Chipotle's setup). You would just tell the workers what you wanted, and they would put everything on your tray. If you wanted another plate, you would just go back, and repeat the same process.

Again, this was a few years before the novel Coronavirus hit...I imagine that something like this might be a way to mitigate the risk of virus spread at buffets.

I agree. That would require a larger wait staff for those large buffets, but seems doable.

So is all the hometown buffets, the golden corrals, and all the casino buffets going out of business also? Or is this just soup plantation effected by this?

After passing by the one close to my house for over 20 years I actually never ate there! Now I would love to try it!...I just know that my parents and uncles loved that place!
