They have a top 3 Ranch dressing.

Does this mean Sweet Tomatoes is also done?

There's been one within a mile of my house for 20 years and I've never eaten there...

Yes. I love their seasonal albondigas soup. Tomato bisque with cheesey bread

Very sad day for me.

My late uncle was one of a trio that were the original founders of Souplantation. It was his concept and idea actually.

The first one opened on Mission Gorge Rd. in San Diego in 1978. My uncle used to walk the daily receipts over to the Bank of America located right near it and met a cute bank teller there who later became my aunt.

I used to love going there as a kid and getting styled by the staff, it was never the same of course after they sold it to a corporation.

I have to imagine that buffet restaurants may be a thing of the past in the post-Covid world . . . well outside of Vegas.

That's a very cool connection and memory to have.

They'll find a way . . . sedentary laziness is not going to go a way.

That turkey chili was the business. Would get a bowl, crumble up the cornbread in it, top with some shredded cheese...HEAVEN!

Met James Worthy at the Soup Plantation in Brentwood many years ago.

It really was amazing in the early days. Back then they even had sandwiches and stuff on the menu and amazing blueberry muffins.

It was really cool as a kid coming down in the late 70's/early 80's and hanging out at the restaurants with all the young people working there....some of the older girls had the Marsha Brady thing going on if you know what I mean.

It was really a great group of people, my uncle and his partners really were cool guys. He had been a longtime bartender in the San Diego area and worked at restaurants before opening his own so my family were all really proud of it.

End of an era for sure.

Such an awesome familial, mental time capsule to have.

In college, I used to eat at Souplantation near closing time. Often, at the end of the night, we'd get hooked up with pizza bread and muffins they were going to throw out.

I've taken my kids to a few times now and they of course love the self serve ice cream at the end.

Shame to see it go.

Loved their mushroom soup but I don't think I'll miss it. They kept raising prices and cutting back on ingredients.

Covid supposedly can’t be spread through ingestion— only by breathing it in or by touching your mouth/nose. Are buffets actually a sanitary risk or is it just paranoia?

(Though touching the same serving utensil could be a form of transmission.)

Thanks, it’s worse than I thought. Ever since the Feb report of some Singapore tech symposium attendees getting Covid-19 from a buffet, I’ve been holding off on all buffet-style places. Not sure if buffets outside of LV will be back anytime soon. Souplantation’s definitely going to be missed.

There used to be an Indian buffet I would go to, and this was well, well before COVID hit.

It was not the usual buffet where you would just take whatever you wanted. The food was behind a glass covering, with workers there (somewhat like Chipotle's setup). You would just tell the workers what you wanted, and they would put everything on your tray. If you wanted another plate, you would just go back, and repeat the same process.

Again, this was a few years before the novel Coronavirus hit...I imagine that something like this might be a way to mitigate the risk of virus spread at buffets.

Where are all the germs coming from? People sneezing into their hands and then touching the utensils?

Don’t need to. You can be out and about and get exposed anywhere. Then you carry it around. You go to a buffet. You don’t wash your hands and touch the serving utensils. So just imagine how many other people touched it before and after you.

Plus not everyone has the same level of cleanliness. Eg washing hands. Using hand sanitizer.
