Cake - War Pigs (and I know someone is going to mention Gov't Mule right about here, but too bad)

Gretchen Wilson does a great version of Barracuda, and while she has the pipes to handle a tough song, it's more of a note for note recreation like Weezer's Africa, where while nothing is really taken away from the original, nothing is really added to it either, and I feel that sort of falls into its own category.

Naw . . . Cake's version is awesome!

All of those are great, but Sweet Jane is one of my favorites, and SD's Ring is right there as well.

After Trent Reznor heard Cash's cover of Hurt, he pretty much said it's your song now. The subject matter is something that both were intimately familiar with, but hearing it from someone who had gone all the way down the road and was near the end just added a huge boost to the emotional level of the song.

And it had a great video.

I would add Mrs. Robinson. By the Lemonheads.

Que Será, Será by Sly & The Family Stone

I love the RnB inflection in this version. I also love Doris Day's rendition from The Man Who Knew Too Much.

This Masquerade by George Benson

Leon Russell's original is beautiful and haunting, but I feel like Benson's sensibility (particularly his trademark scat singing/soloing) just takes this song to a different place.

Here's a song that most never knew there was an original version, I posted the original first for reference, if you can't make it though, don't feel bad, it's pretty average...

https://youtu.be/S0-Sdf4x1fg

I love this version and I'm not even remotely a country music fan:

Not a recording but from a live Earth Day concert, Keith Urban and Alicia Keys performing Gimme Shelter.

I hadn't heard that in such a long time but this is one of my faves. I remember listening to this a lot in Jr High.

Getting back to rock and roll, or maybe not, but at least it's in the language most of us understand, this, among so many great Dylan covers, is probably my favorite live cover of any Dylan song:

Vedder has great taste in music, he covers some great tunes.

My mom used to have a cassette tape of various oldies hits that she'd often play in the car when I was growing up, so the version of "Last Kiss" that I'm familiar with is the J. Frank Wilson and the Cavaliers one. In doing some research, it appears she had that "Senior Prom" collection that was released in 1987, with a bunch of oldies and teen tragedy songs on there. I remember "Patches" was one of those, just your typical uplifting song about teen suicide. (I kid, I kid.)
